GRS walls are more adaptable to different environmental conditions, more economical, and offer high performance in a wide range of transportation infrastructure applications. This book addresses both GRS and GMSE, with a much stronger emphasis on the former. For completeness, it begins with a review of shear strength of soils and classical earth pressure theories. It then goes on to examine the use of geosynthetics as reinforcement, and followed by the load-deformation behavior of GRS mass as a soil-geosynthetic composite, reinforcing mechanisms of GRS, and GRS walls with different types of facing. Finally, the book finishes by covering design concepts with design examples for different loading and geometric conditions, and the construction of GRS walls, including typical construction procedures and general construction guidelines. The number of GRS walls and abutments built to date is relatively low due to lack of understanding of GRS. While failure rate of GMSE has been estimated to be around 5%, failure of GRS has been found to be practically nil, with studies suggesting many advantages, including a smaller susceptibility to long-term creep and stronger resistance to seismic loads when well-compacted granular fill is employed. Book excerpt: This report addresses four proposed revisions to the AASHTO guidelines concerning design and construction of geosynthetic-reinforced soil (GSR) walls (AASHTO, 1996). The proposed revisions are regarding: lateral earth pressure on wall facing, long-term deformation, truncated reinforcement at wall base and the CTI tails, and embedment and leveling pad. For each of the proposed revisions, the deficiencies in the current AASHTO guidelines are addressed in detail; the literature on the research findings and measured performance is presented; and the specific revision is proposed. The limitations and practical implications of each proposed revision are also discussed.

Book excerpt: Mechanically Stabilized Earth (MSE) retaining walls have become the dominant retained wall system on ODOT projects. The permanent MSE walls constructed on ODOT projects, in recent years, use metallic reinforcements and facing connections buried directly in the backfill soil. Accelerated deterioration of these structural elements would have serious financial and safety impacts for the Department. Classical MSE wall design incorporates an estimate of deterioration of reinforcement by corrosion. Monitoring of actual corrosion performance, however, is an important element of managing the current inventory of MSE walls. Monitoring could answer key questions that can provide for the best management of the existing walls, and provide feedback to the design process for future installations. This report details a literature review of methods for estimating and measuring deterioration of structural reinforcing elements in both concrete and MSE walls. It also presents a selected history of metallic reinforcement design specification and utilization. A listing of the MSE walls that can be identified in the ODOT Bridge Data System is included.

Book excerpt: The purpose of this project was to document the installation of a post-tensioned concrete masonry sound wall constructed as part of a widening and sound wall project along US 36 near Denver, Colorado. In addition, the wall was instrumented at the time of construction to monitor the loss in prestress in the steel tendons over time due to concrete masonry creep and shrinkage and steel relaxation. Tendon tension was monitored for one year to obtain values for the accumulated losses. Accurate losses in post-tensioned concrete masonry are important for economical design. Currently, there are limited data to support an accurate prediction of prestress loss in concrete masonry.

Much research has been conducted to develop corrosion protection systems that can prolong the life span of reinforced concrete structures. The Colorado Department of Transportation (CDOT) has several routine and experimental measures to prevent corrosion of the rebar including epoxy-coated rebar, calcium nitrite admixture, organic corrosion inhibitors, a thick cover of quality concrete, and a waterproofing membrane covered by an asphalt overlay. An extensive literature review was performed to collect information on various corrosion protection systems that have been used in the U.S. and around the world. Current CDOT practices in terms of corrosion protection measures were reviewed. A draft inspection plan for Colorado's bridge structures was proposed.

Book excerpt: In May 2000, the Colorado Department of Transportation (CDOT) requested a forensic study of a project located on I-24 north of Denver. The request was made because, within a year of the 1997 overlay, longitudinal cracking appeared in the surface. Transverse cracks were attributed to reflective cracking. However, the longitudinal cracks appeared to be surface initiated. In October 2000, a forensic team reviewed the project and established a sampling and testing plan to take cores from the roadway. Based on data analysis of the cores, the higher than expected in-place air voids, the low effective asphalt, and segregation within the mat, all contributed to the early cracking.
