Book excerpt: This paper describes a neutron-gamma dose measurement system utilizing a Tissue Equivalent Proportional Counter (TEPC). A multi-channel analyzer acquires the data and sends it to a personal computer for analysis on a spreadsheet. The system yields information on lineal energy, absorbed dose, quality factor and dose equivalent for different neutron-gamma sources. Results are presented which compare the response of the TEPC system to a thermoluminescent detector (TLD), neutron remmeter (AN/PDR-70), and a liquid scintillator (NE-213) with exposure to Californium, Plutonium-Beryllium and 14 MeV neutron sources. Quality factor comparisons are shown between the TEPC system, which measures lineal energy, to presently accepted quality factors, which are based on linear energy. The results of the project indicate that the TEPC should be given serious consideration for use as a shipboard area dosimeter. Keywords: Dosimeters; Radiation dosimetry; Radiation; Safety measures.

Book excerpt: The Tissue Equivalent Proportional Counter (TEPC) was developed to monitor low level neutron exposure rates at working stations in a nuclear fuel fabrication facility. It has proven capable of accurately measuring neutron dose rates at levels from 0.1 to 0.2 mrem/hr. It also calculates the Quality Factor which is of importance in locations where the neutron to gamma ratio may vary significantly and irregularily. The system described is computerized to monitor 100 work locations simulationeously and can be expanded to monitor 384 locations. Neutron dose is accumulated on a real time basis and after the proton drop point is established, dose rate can be read out at any time for the dose accumulated over a specified period of time. The current development program which provides reduced system maintenance, lower detection limits, and improved accuracy is discussed along with examples of measurement data and work experience with the current system.

Book excerpt: The methods used to obtain absolute neutron dose measurements and quality factor determination from the tissue equivalent proportional counter (TEPC) are reviewed. Exposure to nearly monoenergetic neutrons with energies from 200 keV to 7.5 MeV indicate that the absorbed dose due to fast neutrons measured by the TEPC averaged 3% higher, with a standard deviation (1 sigma) of 9%, than the tissue kerma calculated from neutron fluence measurements. The absorbed dose due to fast neutrons measured by the TEPC agreed within 0.6% of the calculated tissue kerma for a PuBe neutron source, whose neutron yield was determined within 2% by the United States National Bureau of Standards. Data are presented which show the TEPC measures quality factors accurately enough for health physics purposes for neutrons with energies between 200 keV and 5 MeV.

The value of H*( 10) for the 252Cf source and for the AmBe source using experimental measurements was obtained. These results are presented in this study. The study shows that the GEM-based TEPC can successfully estimate H*(10). With these results and some refinements, this GEM-based TEPC can directly be used as a neutron rem meter.
