Book Design and Applications of Cold cathode X ray Imaging Systems

Download or read book Design and Applications of Cold cathode X ray Imaging Systems written by Avilash Kalpathy Cramer and published by . This book was released on 2021 with total page 159 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: X-ray computed tomography (CT) and planar x-ray imaging are mainstays of modern clinical care. The electron generation mechanism in standard x-ray tubes - specifically, a thermionic cathode - is reliable and capable of high current. However, thermionic cathodes are bulky, and cannot be pulsed quickly. Non-thermionic (’cold-cathode’) electron generation can be exploited to make a smaller and rapidly pulsable x-ray source. Such an x-ray source could improve not just the portability of x-ray devices, but would allow for a CT system to operate by pulsing a distributed ring of x-ray sources instead of rotating a single large x-ray source. Furthermore, cold-cathode x-ray sources could allow for new signal acquisition and processing paradigms in the x-ray domain. This includes time-based image acquisition techniques, such as elastography and photon-counting measurements. In this dissertation, I discuss (1) the development of two novel types of cold-cathode x-ray sources: an ultraviolet photocathode-based source, and a silicon field emission chip; (2) novel methods for planar x-ray image acquisition, including a demonstration of dynamic x-ray elastography using a pulsed photocathode x-ray source; and (3) applications of modern signal processing techniques to the tomographic image reconstruction problem. In an epilogue, I discuss our research on N95 respirator sterilization and re-use for crisis situations.

Book Performance and Applications of a Cold Cathode Soft X ray Source

Download or read book Performance and Applications of a Cold Cathode Soft X ray Source written by James S. Solomon and published by . This book was released on 1969 with total page 43 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The design and principles of operation of a cold cathode soft x-ray source are described for the production of soft x-rays. The source is versatile, very simple, and may be powered by either AC or DC high voltage power supplies. Discharge control is achieved with a fine metering valve or a commercially available Automatic Pressure Controller (A.P.C.). Measurements of x-ray stability and intensity were made with a continuously bending mica crystal spectrometer and electronics linked to a teletype system. Al Kalpha intensity as high as 71,420 counts per second was recorded. X-ray stability with a fine metering valve to control the discharge is fair for the first two or three hours of operation. With an A.P.C. the stability is greatly improved. The count rate is shown to have an average standard deviation of plus or minus 1% or less for the first hour of operation and no greater than 1.5% for longer periods of time (2 to 24 hours). Applications of the cold cathode source are shown for x-ray emission spectroscopy, soft x-ray radiography, and x-ray diffraction of long chain organic materials. (Author).

Book Design and Development of a Compact X ray Tube for Stationary CT Architecture

Download or read book Design and Development of a Compact X ray Tube for Stationary CT Architecture written by Ashish Vighnahar Avachat and published by . This book was released on 2018 with total page 72 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Multisource architectures enable sweeping one or more x-ray beams across the imaging field-of-view faster than physically moving a single x-ray source and/or a detector. Hence, these architectures are attractive for the applications in which temporal resolution plays an important role, for example, cardiac computed tomography (CT) or real-time CT. One of the recent developments in multisource architectures for CT imaging is stationary CT architecture, whereby two separate stationary arrays - one for x-ray sources and one for detectors - are utilized to sweep one or more x-ray beams along the gantry and acquire 360 degree projections. To have a stationary CT architecture and still acquire enough number of projections for a successful CT reconstruction, an array of closely spaced and individually addressable x-ray sources that are compact in size and are capable of producing x-ray pulses at a high frequency is required. This work is a part of a research continuum toward developing a compact x-ray tube potentially to be used in the said stationary CT architecture. The central hypothesis of the research conducted is that, a field emission (FE) based cold cathode and transmission type anode allow the size of an x-ray tube to be reduced, and still generate a required x-ray pulse. Specifically, this work entails the design of an electrostatic lens for electron focusing in a compact x-ray tube and the initial experimental studies of a prototype compact x-ray tube. Using particle-in-cell code, OOPIC PRO, electron field emission from CNT cathode and electron focusing by three types of electrostatic lenses--Single lens, Double lens, and Einzel lens --were simulated, compared, and studied for anode voltages of 30 kV p to 140 kV p. The first-generation prototype compact x-ray tube was developed and studied. The initial studies conducted to understand the performance of the prototype and its control parameters. After further optimization of size and testing, this compact x-ray tube design holds a potential to be used in a stationary CT architecture for improved temporal resolution."--Abstract, page iv.

Book Design and Analysis of Low cost X ray Imaging System Incorporating Consumer Camera Imaging

Download or read book Design and Analysis of Low cost X ray Imaging System Incorporating Consumer Camera Imaging written by Logan B. Abel and published by . This book was released on 2018 with total page 58 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: X-ray imaging is a core component of our modern medical diagnosis arsenal in combatting a broad range of disease. X-ray imaging allows medical professionals to see the internal structure and layout of the human body, and in this way allows for the visualization of unseen ailments. A current “disease of poverty” which is the target of this study is tuberculosis, a lung bacteria which is visible on x-ray imaging. X-ray imaging is a well known and used technology, yet x-ray imaging remains very expensive and unwieldy for use in less-developed regions of the world. Within the last three to four decades, the world has seen a massive explosion in consumer camera technology development, largely driven by circuit miniaturization, and this has led to cheaper and higher resolution cameras being produced. X-ray images themselves rely on a material to turn x-rays, the photons which pass through the person in medical imaging, into electrical signals which can be read by a computer. This collection of x-ray photons can be done through the coupling of a scintillating screen and a camera which images the scintillating screen to create an x-ray image. This study explores this particular method of x-ray imaging which is likely to be cheaper than existing methods of x-ray imaging, yet also likely yields images of poorer resolution and contrast distinction in x-ray images. The theoretical components necessary to setup such a system in the most efficient manner possible were analyzed, taking into consideration safety and finance constraints. The imaging capabilities of a Nikon D810 (f/1.4, 50 mm lens) and iPhone 5S (f/2.2 lens), higher and lower quality cameras respectively, were analyzed using three scintillating screens, the MCI Optonix DRZ High, Scintacor DRZ Medium, and Scintacor DRZ Ultrafine screens, to capture the x-rays produced from a 14 mA 100 kV x-ray tube. It was found that the Nikon D810 coupled with the MCI Optonix DRZ High Screen produced results similar in performance to current medical imaging, and the iPhone 5S images were too noisy to be conclusive. Further work should go into developing a more finalized and standalone product that can be tested in clinically important settings, as this study does provide the proof-of-concept framework for this to be possible.

Book Design and Characterization of an 8x8 Lateral Detector Array for Digital X ray Imaging

Download or read book Design and Characterization of an 8x8 Lateral Detector Array for Digital X ray Imaging written by Christos Hristovski and published by . This book was released on 2010 with total page 84 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: X-ray imaging has become one of the most pervasive and effective means of diagnosis in medical clinics today. As more imaging systems transition to digital modes of capture and storage, new applications of x-ray imaging, such as tomosynthesis, become feasible. These new imaging modalities have the potential to expose patients to large amounts of radiation so the necessity to use sensitive imagers that reduce dose and increase contrast is essential. An experimental design that utilizes laterally oriented detectors and amorphous semiconductors on crystalline silicon substrates has been undertaken in this study. Emphasis on fabricating a device suitable for medical x-ray imaging is the key principle throughout the design process. This study investigates the feasibility and efficiency of a new type of x-ray imager that combines the high speed, low noise, and potential complexity of CMOS circuit design with the high responsivity, large area uniformity, and flexibility of amorphous semiconductors. Results show that the design tradeoffs made in order to create a low cost, high fill factor, and high speed imager are realistic. The device exhibits good responsivity to optical light, possesses a sufficient capacitive well, and maintains CMOS characteristics. This study demonstrates that with sufficient optimization it may be possible to design and deploy real time x-ray system on chip imagers similar to those used in optical imaging.
