So, preliminary study of human factors engineering is important in designing the wheelchair to be more ergonomics for them in doing daily activities. The main objective of this project is to improve the existing wheelchair in term of daily usage. It is focus on the use of simulation in analyzing the critical parts of the wheelchair model and evaluates it in term of daily usage. Evaluate the critical part of stress on the wheelchair which consists of seating support and wheel caster. In this steps, applying the knowledge gathered from the questionnaire is use to make a design refers to case data that suitable for the project. Several sketches were made and only three were selected based on suitability of the design. Three sketches being draw into SolidWorks software and then go through to simulation process by using FEA tools that is ALGOR software, the three designs was analyzed using constant force with three different materials. From the analysis, the Stress Von Misses was used to calculated safety factor. The result showed that, design 3 have highest value of safety factor with material E-Glass fiber which is 2.77, followed by Steel ASTM A36 is 2.44 on design 3 and 1.95 on design 2 with material E-Glass fiber. The highest number of safety factor is E-glass Fiber on design 3. So, the best selection of material is E-Glass Fiber for the Design 3.

The objectives of this thesis are to design the foldable wheelchair that can be move almost all type of surfaces and to analyze the chassis of the wheelchair. Firstly, this thesis discussed about the present market concept and materials that used for wheelchair. Later, three design concepts are suggested and the concept selection using concept screening and scoring is made. The design using Solidwork software in part by part of the wheelchair is modelled. The finite element analysis is performed by Algor software. This design analysis focused on two types of chassis materials, which are aluminium alloy and stainless steel. The maximum force of 2000N was applied to chassis model. The analysis of displacement distribution, the strain and stress contour later is discussed. The result shows that stainless steel is the best material to used for chassis of wheelchair because low in displacement distribution and stress contour compared to aluminium alloy.

Urban planning, the design of buildings, communication networks and the products, tools can be done from the perspective of removing barriers for people with disabilities. It is crucial to promote a way of thinking aimed at taking into account the needs of people with disabilities in the creation of all new civilizational solutions. Monograph “Ergonomics for People with Disabilities: Design for Accessibility” presents interdisciplinary attitude to the issue of designing for people with disabilities. The aim of the monograph is to present the factors affecting life activation of people with disabilities (including “50+” and “mature” people) and the problems that people with disabilities face by the participation in social and professional life and the daily activities and how design for accessibility can help with solving those problems. Concepts presented in the first part are focused on designing of products supporting inclusion such as wheelchairs, orthopaedic seats, carrier vests and hand tools. This part consist of five chapters. Field of interest of second part of the monograph is how to design accessible socio-technical environment. The subject is presented in four chapters on two hospital case studies, backyard sensorimotor path case and integrated therapeutic environment case. Third part is focused on universal design with ICT solutions. It consist of the concepts and analysis of solutions supporting people with disabilities and elderly people presented in six chapters. Scope of the last part is human factor design for barriers reduction. In three chapters problems such deafness, dementia and professional activity of people with disabilities were presented. Monograph includes the wide perspective of engineers, designers, architects, psychologists, sociologists, vocational counsellors and medicals that can inspire to new look at design for accessibility. The projects begin with make a questionnaire survey to the respondent'. From the survey, a total of 35 respondents' has taken part. The survey consists of several parts such as personal information, general information of using wheelchair, and the ergonomic of wheelchair. The stress evaluation was carried out at lower back, buttock and knee; the gathered information through survey was applied in the redesign process. Three sketches have been sketched. Based on the sketches, Pugh selection concept has been used to select the best design. Additionally, the wheelchair features a scissor mechanism with sliding parts, allowing the user to easily adjust the wheel position, coupled with safety features that ensure increased stability. The design has been meticulously sketched and designed in 2D and 3D using SolidWorks software.

Many lower limb disabled subjects depend upon a wheelchair for their mobility. Estimated numbers for the Netherlands, Europe and USA are respectively 80.000, 2,5 million and 1,25 million wheelchair dependent individuals. Groups large enough to allow a special research focus and conference activity. Both the quality of the wheelchair, the individual work capacity, the functionality of the wheelchair/user combination, and the effectiveness of the rehabilitation programme do indeed determine the freedom of mobility. Their optimization is highly dependent upon a continuous and high quality research effort, in combination with regular discussion and dissemination with practitioners. The book intends to give a state of the art view on the current fundamental, clinical and applied research findings and their consequences upon wheelchair propulsion, arm work, wheelchair training and possible consequences of a wheelchair confined life style. Also its implications for rehabilitation, as well as alternative modes of ambulation and activity in the wheelchair confined population, such as functional electrical stimulation and its possible future developments, are dealt with.

At the end, when all the process mentioned above is done, the material for report writing is gathered. The report writing process will be guided by the Universiti Malaysia Pahang final year report writing guide. This process also included the presentation slide making for the final presentation of the project. The project ended after the submission of the report and the presentation slide has been presented.

Book excerpt: Biomechanical analysis has been used by many to evaluate upper extremity (UE) motion during human movement, including during the use of assistive devices such as crutches and walkers. However, few studies have been conducted to examine the upper extremity kinetics during wheelchair mobility, specifically within the pediatric population. In 2000, 90% of wheelchair users (1.5 million people) in the United States were manual wheelchair users, requiring the use of their upper body to maneuver the wheelchair as well as perform other activities of daily living. Among children under the age of 18, the wheelchair was the most used assistive mobility device at 0.12% of the USA population (about 88,000 children). Of these children, 89.9% (79,000) use manual wheelchairs. Associated with the leading causes of assistive mobility device usage in children and adolescents, are severe cases of osteogenesis imperfecta (OI), cerebral palsy (CP), myelomeningocele (MM) and spinal cord injury (SCI). Once confined to a wheelchair, the upper extremities must take over the responsibilities of the lower extremities, including mobility and other activities of daily living. For many individuals who are wheelchair-bound since childhood, pain and other pathological symptoms present by their mid to late 20{u2019}s. Due to increased life expectancy and continual wheelchair use, these injuries may cause the user to have reduced, or loss of, independent function as they age, further decreasing quality-of-life. Better knowledge of upper extremity dynamics during wheelchair propulsion can improve understanding of the onset and propagation of UE pathologies. This may lead to improvements in wheelchair prescription, design, training, and long-term/transitional care. Thereby, pathology onset may be slowed or prevented, and quality of life restored. In order to better understand and model the UE joints during wheelchair mobility three main goals must be accomplished: 1. Create an upper extremity kinematic model including: additional segments, more accurate representations of segments and joint locations, consideration of ease of use in the clinical setting with children. 2. Create the corresponding kinetic model to determine the forces and moments occurring at each joint. 3. Implement the model and collect preliminary data from children with UE pathology.

Book excerpt: The U.S. Census Bureau has reported that 56.7 million Americans had some type of disability in 2010, which represents 18.7 percent of the civilian noninstitutionalized population included in the 2010 Survey of Income and Program Participation. The U.S. Social Security Administration (SSA) provides disability benefits through the Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) program and the Supplemental Security Income (SSI) program. As of December 2015, approximately 11 million individuals were SSDI beneficiaries, and about 8 million were SSI beneficiaries. SSA currently considers assistive devices in the nonmedical and medical areas of its program guidelines. During determinations of substantial gainful activity and income eligibility for SSI benefits, the reasonable cost of items, devices, or services applicants need to enable them to work with their impairment is subtracted from eligible earnings, even if those items or services are used for activities of daily living in addition to work. In addition, SSA considers assistive devices in its medical disability determination process and assessment of work capacity. The Promise of Assistive Technology to Enhance Activity and Work Participation provides an analysis of selected assistive products and technologies, including wheeled and seated mobility devices, upper-extremity prostheses, and products and technologies selected by the committee that pertain to hearing and to communication and speech in adults.
