Book Design and Analysis of Orthotrophic Ring Stiffened Cylindrical Shells Subjected to External Hydrostatic Pressure

Download or read book Design and Analysis of Orthotrophic Ring Stiffened Cylindrical Shells Subjected to External Hydrostatic Pressure written by and published by . This book was released on 2008 with total page 91 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Three theories are presented for the analysis of ring-stiffened or monocoque cylindrical shells under hydrostatic pressure. The theories compute the stress state and the axisymmetric collapse, interbay buckling, and general instability pressures from external hydrostatic pressure loading. The theories were derived for the case of specially orthotropic material with theoretically uniform properties through the thickness; the theories apply equally to shells made of isotropic materials. A computer program, DAPS4 (Design and Analysis of Plastic Shells, Version 4), was written that incorporates these theories that can be used as an initial sizing tool or analysis of a shell's hydrostatic pressure capability. The program includes a "pseudo-plastic" method to account for the reduction of computed collapse pressures when the stress state is above the proportional limit of the material's stress-strain curve. The purpose of this report is to document the theories and the code. Correlation with numerous pressure tests is shown. A user manual with example problems is included.

Book Ring stiffened Orthotropic Circular Cylindrical Shell Under Hydrostatic Pressure

Download or read book Ring stiffened Orthotropic Circular Cylindrical Shell Under Hydrostatic Pressure written by Joseph Kempner and published by . This book was released on 1968 with total page 126 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A ring-reinforced, orthotropic circular cylindrical shell subjected to external hydrostatic pressure loading is investigated. The stresses and deflections throughout the shell are determined by a shell theory which considers the combined and separate effects of large rotations, transverse shear deformation, initial deflections and Flugge type thickness terms. The ring deformations are described by both a deep ring theory and a plane strain analysis. The results are used in the development of pertinent design formulae. Numerical results applicable to a typical glass-reinforced-plastic shell indicate that the nonlinear effects may be accurately provided for by using a perturbation solution. Hill's criterion for yielding of an orthotropic material as well as an analysis to approximate the actual stresses in the constituent materials of a nonhomogeneous shell are also applied.

Book Optimum Design of Ring Stiffened Cylindrical Shells

Download or read book Optimum Design of Ring Stiffened Cylindrical Shells written by Allen J. Bronowicki and published by . This book was released on 1974 with total page 33 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The report deals with the optimum structural design of circular cylindrical shells reinforced with identical uniformly spaced T-ring stiffeners, and subjected to external pressure loading. The optimization problems considered are of three types: (1) minimum-weight design, (2) design for maximum separation of the lowest two natural frequencies, and (3) design for maximum separation of the lowest two natural frequencies which have primarily axial content. Gross buckling is precluded by specifying a minimum natural frequency, and additional behavioral constraints preclude yielding or buckling of panels, T-ring stiffeners, and web and flange instabilities within each T-ring. Analysis is based on use of an equivalent orthotropic shell model, and optimization is accomplished through use of a sequential unconstrained minimization technique. (Modified author abstract).

Book Optimum Design of Isotropic Monocoque and Ring Stiffened Circular Cylindrical Shells Subject to External Hydrostatic Pressure

Download or read book Optimum Design of Isotropic Monocoque and Ring Stiffened Circular Cylindrical Shells Subject to External Hydrostatic Pressure written by Henry A. Castillo Jr and published by . This book was released on 1992 with total page 134 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The objective of this research is to create a flexible code which is to be used in the investigation of optimum (minimum weight) shell designs. A shell analysis/design program (DAPS3) and a general purpose numerical optimization program (ADS) are incorporated into a single code (THESIS). This code provides the user great flexibility in changing the design variables and constraints which model the optimization problem. The optimum designs produced by this code are compared to DAPS3 optimum designs in order to identify any improvements made by the numerical optimization technique.

Book Buckling of Orthotropic Conical Shells Under External Pressure

Download or read book Buckling of Orthotropic Conical Shells Under External Pressure written by Josef Singer and published by . This book was released on 1962 with total page 35 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Donnell stablity equtions for thin, cilar, orthotropic conical shells are presented and solved for external presre loading. the solution is likewise appied o stiffened conical shells by consideration of equivalent othotropic shells. Typical cses are computed and compared wth corresponding isotropic shells. Correlation with equivalent cylindrical shells then yields a simple approximate stability analysis for orthotropic or ring-stiffened conical shells under hydrostatic pressure. (Author).

This book was released on 1985-09-30 with total page 456 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report describes the work performed by Lockheed Palo Alto Research Labora tory, Palo Alto, California 94304. The work was sponsored by Air Force Office of Scientific Research, Bolling AFB, Washington, D. C. under Grant F49620-77-C-0l22 and by the Flight Dynamics Laboratory, Air Force Wright Aeronautical Laboratories, Wright-Patterson AFB, Ohio under Contract F3361S-76-C-31OS. The work was completed under Task 2307Nl, "Basic Research in Behavior of Metallic and Composite Components of Airframe Structures". The work was admini stered by Lt. Col. J. D. Morgan (AFOSR) and Dr. N. S. Khot (AFWAL/FIBRA). The contract work was performed between October 1977 and December 1980. The technical report was released by the Author in December 1981. Preface Many structures are assembled from parts which are thin. For example, a stiffened plate or cylindrical panel is composed of a sheet the thickness of which is small com pared to its length, breadth, and stiffener- spacing, and stiffeners the thickness of which is small compared to their _ heights and lengths. These assembled structures, loaded in compression, can buckle overall, that is sheet and stiffeners can collapse together in a general instability mode; the sheet can buckle locally between stiffeners; the stiffeners can cripple; and a variety of complex buckling interactions can occur involving local and overall deformations of both sheet and stiffeners. More complex, built-up structures can buckle in more complex and subtle ways.

Download or read book Buckling of Thin Metal Shells written by J.G. Teng and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2006-06-28 with total page 518 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Thin-walled metal shell structures are highly efficient in their use of material, but they are particularly sensitive to failure by buckiling. Many different forms of buckling can occur for different geometries and different loading conditions. Because this field of knowledge is both complex and industrially important, it is of great interest and c
