Book Crushing the Categories Vaidalyaprakarana

Download or read book Crushing the Categories Vaidalyaprakarana written by Nagarjuna and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 2018-09-25 with total page 384 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A rare glimpse of the sophisticated philosophical exchange between Buddhist and non-Buddhist schools at an early stage. The Vaidalyaprakarana provides a rare glimpse of the sophisticated philosophical exchange between Buddhist and non-Buddhist schools at an early stage and will be of interest to scholars of Buddhist thought, classical Indian Philosophy, and the history of Asian thought. Belonging to a set of Nagarjuna’s philosophical works known as the yukti-corpus, the Vaidalyaprakarana is noteworthy for its close engagement with the Hindu philosophers. It refutes the sixteen categories of the Nyaya school, which formed the logical and epistemological framework for many of the debates between Buddhist and Hindu philosophers. The Sanskrit original of the Vaidalyaprakarana long lost, the author translates the text from Tibetan, giving it an extensive analytical commentary. The aim is twofold: to investigate the interaction of the founder of the Madhyamika school with this influential school of Hindu thought; and to make sense of how Nagarjuna’s arguments that refute the Naiyayika categories are essential to the Madhyamika path in general.

Book Africa in the Bengali Imagination

Download or read book Africa in the Bengali Imagination written by Mahruba T. Mowtushi and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2024-10-02 with total page 259 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book examines textual representations of Africa in the Indian imagination from 1928 to 1973. It critically analyses Bengali literature during this period, their imitation of colonial racial prejudices and how it allowed Bengalis to fashion their identity. It analyses the development of ‘Africa’ as an idea and historical reality through the writings of five Bengali writers including the Bengali novelist Bibhutibhushan Bandyopadhyay, the children’s author Hemendra Kumar Roy, the poet and philosopher Rabindranath Tagore, the playwright Ganesh Bagchi and the surrealist poet and founding editor of Transition magazine Rajat Neogy. The book shows how these writers engage with the idea of Africa and their influence in the construction of the Bengali cultural identity during the freedom struggle, the Partition of Bengal in 1947 and the creation of Bangladesh in 1971. The book offers readers a glimpse of the exotic imaginary locales of Africa while offering an in-depth look into the interconnected histories, cartographic routes and cultural exchange between India and Africa. A first of its kind, this book will be an excellent read for students and scholars of literature, comparative literature, history, cultural studies, postcolonial studies, South Asian studies, African studies and diaspora studies. .

Book The Last Words of James Joyce

Download or read book The Last Words of James Joyce written by Jim Broderick and published by Histria Books. This book was released on 2023-06-20 with total page 92 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A disgruntled Community College professor who loves literature but loathes his students. A homicide detective who takes her inspiration from Patti Smith' s punk period. A cult of Christian zealots who livestream actual crucifixions. And a writer of porn movies whose career does not have a happy ending. All of them connected by a lost manuscript written by one of the twentieth century' s greatest writers. (That is, if it exists.)At the heart of this multi-faceted narrative is Lucia Joyce, James Joyce' s daughter and muse, a brilliant and visionary woman whose life remained shadowed by the specter of madness. Was she the recipient of her father' s last masterwork? Where are the letters that would tell her story? Would she have shared his final work if she had ever been released from the mental institution where she languished her entire adult life? The Last Words of James Joyce is a modern-day literary treasure hunt, feverishly churning through the worlds of social media, academic conferences, sanitariums, porn movie sets and late-night diners, with a cast of characters who' d be right at home in the most wild Joycean fantasy, all drawn by the prospect of the literary find of the century: an unpublished work by the master modernist and literary icon himself. Both playful and profound, this modern quixotic adventure explores the life of a neglected and heroic woman and her legacy as the keeper of strange and dark secrets, and the scramble for fame, fortune, and infamy that her silence spawned. But as this novel reminds us, some voices simply can' t be stilled — not by time, death, or deceit — and what we think are lost words sometimes turn out instead to be last words.

This book was released on 2015-03-19 with total page 369 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. This volume brings together a team of leading scholars to explore and compare linguistic practices of young people in multilingual urban spaces, with analyses ranging from grammar to ideology. It includes fascinating examples from cities in Europe, Africa, Canada and the US to demonstrate how young people express their identities through language, for example in hip-hop lyrics and new social media. This is the first book to cover the topic from a globally diverse perspective, and it investigates how linguistic practices across different communities intersect with age, ethnicity, gender and class. In doing so it shows commonalities and differences in how young people experience, act and relate to the contemporary social, cultural and linguistic complexity of the twenty-first century.
