Book Debt Relief and Sustainable Development in Sub Saharan Africa

Download or read book Debt Relief and Sustainable Development in Sub Saharan Africa written by George C. Abbott and published by Edward Elgar Publishing. This book was released on 1993 with total page 216 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sub-Saharan Africa is facing a debt crisis of major international significance. Not only have debt levels risen sharply, but output and exports have stagnated. Standards of living have fallen drastically, and in many cases have been reduced to the level of the early 1960s. This important book argues that it is impossible for Sub-Saharan African countries to resolve the debt crisis without outside assistance. The conventional methods of debt consolidation are inappropriate and of limited use in their case. The SSA countries need to undertake major structural reforms if they are to get out of debt and achieve long term sustainable growth and development. The book provides an integrated debt-development strategy for achieving both these goals. Debt Relief and Sustainable Development in Sub-Saharan Africamakes a significant contribution to an important but hitherto relatively neglected area of the international debt crisis. It will be essential reading for development economists as well as all those with an interest in contemporary Africa.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book assesses the impact of the African debt crisis on poverty. The author studies the relationship between debt and socio-economic development in Sub-Saharan Africa. Furthermore, Sonko analyzes the impact of debt-induced expenditure adjustments, including budgetary retrenchment in an African economy undergoing structural adjustment. Sustainable, self-reliant development, debt relief, and the redesign of structural adjustment programs to make them less controversial and more effective in Africa are required. The overall analysis is conducted with a view to what the author refers to as the "state of global interconnectedness," implying the need for global economic policy coordination and assistance in finding solutions to Africa's development problems. Book Structural Adjustment and Socio economic Change in Sub Saharan Africa

Download or read book Structural Adjustment and Socio economic Change in Sub Saharan Africa written by Peter Gibbon and published by Nordic Africa Institute. This book was released on 1996 with total page 108 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report summarises the results of work at the Nordiska Afrikainstitutet/Nordic Africa Institute (NAI) on the impact of structural adjustment implementation on the economies, states and societies of sub-Saharan Africa. It consists of two essays and an appendix listing research projects which have been/are being carried out under the auspices of NAI. The first essay raises a series of conceptual and methodological questions in the context of a presentation of some of the main empirical results obtained from extended field work carried out during the course of 1992 and 1993 in Kenya, Tanzania and Zimbabwe. The second essay presents the three main themes - private trading networks and structures, the changing political economy of land, and popular forms of social provisioning - that constitute the core of the second phase of NAI's structural adjustment research and, in so doing, provides a review of aspects of the adjustment literature. This report is, therefore, an attempt both at stock-taking and agenda-building as part of a wider quest for deepening our understanding of the structures and processes of socio-economic change associated with the crisis and adjustment years in contemporary Africa
