Book Southern California s Best Ghost Towns

Download or read book Southern California s Best Ghost Towns written by Philip Varney and published by University of Oklahoma Press. This book was released on 1994-03-01 with total page 170 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The ghost towns of Southern California-some dramatic and nearly intact, others devastated-are well worth visiting. Most are remnants of once-colorful mining towns, though there are also railroad towns, a World War II relocation center, a promoter's swindle, and a failed socialist colony. Some excellent attractions remain. One of the best-preserved stamp mills in the West is in Skidoo. Smelters, homes, stores, and the remarkable wooden American Hotel can be found in Cerro Gordo, which the author calls "California's best true ghost town." Seasoned back-roads traveler Philip Varney, who has visited nearly a hundred ghost towns in the area, provides a down-to-earth and helpful guide to more than sixty of the best in Southern California and nearby Inyo and Kern counties. He defines a ghost town as a town with a population markedly decreased from its peak, one whose initial reason for settlement no longer keeps people there. It can be completely deserted, have a resident or two, or retain genuine signs of vitality, but Varney has eliminated those towns he considers either too populated or too empty of significant remains. The sites are grouped in four chapters in Inyo County, Death Valley, the Mojave Desert and Kern River, and the regions surrounding Los Angeles and San Diego. Each chapter provides a map of the region, a ranking of sites as "major," "secondary," and "minor," information on road conditions, trip suggestions, and tips on the use of particular topographic maps for readers interested in more detailed exploration. Each entry includes directions to a town, a brief history of that town, and notes on its special points of interest. Current photographs provide a valuable record of the sometimes fragile sites. Southern California's Best Ghost Towns will be welcomed both by those who enjoy traveling off the beaten path and by those who enjoy the history of the American West.

Book excerpt: The Rider of the Mohave is a fast-paced western novel by authorJames Fellom. The story involves a gang of notorious train robbers who are hell bent on robbing a train but they are closely pursued by an honest sheriff. Sheriff Warburtonwill stop at nothing to put them behind the bars, but at what cost?_x000D_ Excerpt:_x000D_ "It was three in the morning, but Geerusalem had not yet closed its eyes. There was too much undug gold in the hills; it was too handy—too easy come, easy go; the days, too short; the pleasures, too wanton, too alluring. The camp of Geerusalem promenaded, gambled, danced, fought, debauched the night away, waiting for to-morrow. Far out on desolate Soapweed Plains, rose the intermittent, yelping wail-bark of a coyote. The back door of a little store that fronted on the main street opened cautiously. The interior of what was a kitchen was dark; the flower-garden yard into which it gave, was also dark. The shadowy form of a man emerged and halted; he peered carefully about through the gloom..."_x000D_ _x000D_ _x000D_ _x000D_ _x000D_

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Lemuel brought home news of a tract of government land known as Soapweed Plains, on the north rim of the Mohave Desert, with enticing reports of rich mineral belts in the adjacent mountain ranges. It looked like the opportunity for which they had waited. They would homestead, and in a few years Huntington would be a name indelibly branded on the cattle industry of the State. And there was the further golden prospect of rich mines! Packing their few belongings, husband and wife bought tickets to the dismal wind-whipped station of Mirage, on the Mohave & Southwestern Railroad, and spent two everlasting days shooing a trinity of stubborn burros over a hell waste, into the new land of promise. But again the captivating beckoner had tricked them. Soapweed Plains was a sweltering realm of sagebrush, sand and sidewinders, twenty-five miles wide, divided off from the rest of the desert universe by a horseshoe barricade of saw-edge peaks and table mountains that abutted a sky-line mesa to the south—and by serenading coyotes by night.

Book Alkali

Download or read book Alkali written by Craig Dworkin and published by Counterpath. This book was released on 2015-03-18 with total page 141 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Alkali collects six works, including two desert pastorals describing the sonic and luminescent landscape surrounding the Great Salt Lake, two minimalist geometrical exercises exhausting the typographic limits of two particular oulippean constraints, a restaging of Clark Coolidge’s The Crystal Text, and a long lyric essay on the rhetoric of falling in French modernism. Working from the linguistic toward the literary (in Paul de Man’s sense of the terms), each of these poems attempts to construct a text of sonic density and impassioned argument from the entirely impersonal, inexpressive, chance motivations of the signifier. Together, they propose a mode of non-expressive poetics that seeks to evade the already clichéd styles and tones that have come to characterize the rhetoric of our present-day Conceptualism.

Book Black Powder and Hand Steel

  • Author : Otis E. Young
  • Publisher : University of Oklahoma Press

Download or read book Black Powder and Hand Steel written by Otis E. Young and published by University of Oklahoma Press. This book was released on 2016-03-14 with total page 213 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Mining in the western United States entered its great era after 1860 through use of the double-jack, black powder, hand steel, Bickford fuse, wire rope, and the steam engine. Those were the years of bonanza strikes: Henry Wickenburg’s Vulture Mine in Arizona Territory; the main hard-rock gold strike in the desert Southwest; Ed Schieffelin’s discovery of vast silver deposits in Tombstone, Arizona; and the Tonopah-Goldfield strike in Nevada, which netted over one hundred million dollars. Black Powder and Hand Steel describes the miners and the machinery they used. Otis E. Young, Jr., gives an account of the miners, particularly the Cornish and Irish, their origins, character, social life, pleasures, and, most important, their labors. The miner’s lot depended on the tools he used, and the author traces the evolution of the miner’s most important tools: from hoisting bucket to mine elevator, cold mining to dynamite, ore car to skip, hemp to wire rope, and slow match to Bickford fuse. Young reveals the difficulties of prospecting and mining two of the West’s most valuable ores, gold and silver, and gives readers a firsthand look at the challenges of working even the most successful strikes. A companion volume to Young’s Western Mining, Black Powder and Hand Steel is written in the same lively style—informative and entertaining for general readers and scholars. It is also well illustrated, with drawings by Buck O’Donnell.
