Book excerpt: By examining the centrality of Romantic authorship to both copyright and the music industry, the author highlights the mutual dependence of capitalism and Romanticism, which situates the individual as the key creative force while challenging the commodification of art and self. Marshall reveals how the desire for bootlegs is driven by the same ideals of authenticity employed by the legitimate industry in its copyright rhetoric and practice and demonstrates how bootlegs exist as an antagonistic but necessary component of an industry that does much to prevent them. This book will be of great interest to researchers and students in the sociology of culture, social theory, cultural studies and law.

Download or read book Education and Poverty written by Alfredo Gaete and published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing. This book was released on 2019-05-14 with total page 449 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What are the effects of recent public policies for reducing educational inequalities? How do privatization and other market-based education measures influence schooling in poverty contexts and teacher training programs? In what ways, and to what extent, can these programs take responsibility for improving low-income students’ learning? How do ethnic and cultural differences relate to socioeconomic differences at school? This collection of essays serves to improve the reader’s understanding of the complex relations between education and poverty. While it does this mainly by delving into problems and challenges of the Chilean educational system, they are also currently of international concern. The chapters, authored by leading scholars in Chile and worldwide, present theoretical reflections on, and reports of, contemporary educational research on such issues as social equality, schooling in low socioeconomic sectors, and teacher education, among others. The book will be particularly helpful for scholars from different disciplines who work in education as well as for teacher educators, schoolteachers, and policy makers. More generally, it will be also of interest to anyone who wants to form justified, well-informed beliefs on the ways in which various educational and socioeconomic institutions and processes could, and do, affect each other.

Book Third International Conference on Image Processing and Capsule Networks

Download or read book Third International Conference on Image Processing and Capsule Networks written by Joy Iong-Zong Chen and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2022-07-28 with total page 855 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides a collection of the state-of-the-art research attempts to tackle the challenges in image and signal processing from various novel and potential research perspectives. The book investigates feature extraction techniques, image enhancement methods, reconstruction models, object detection methods, recommendation models, deep and temporal feature analysis, intelligent decision support systems, and autonomous image detection models. In addition to this, the book also looks into the potential opportunities to monitor and control the global pandemic situations. Image processing technology has progressed significantly in recent years, and it has been commercialized worldwide to provide superior performance with enhanced computer/machine vision, video processing, and pattern recognition capabilities. Meanwhile, machine learning systems like CNN and CapsNet get popular to provide better model hierarchical relationships and attempts to more closely mimic biological neural organization. As machine learning systems prosper, image processing and machine learning techniques will be tightly intertwined and continuously promote each other in real-world settings. Adopting this trend, however, the image processing researchers are faced with few image reconstruction, analysis, and segmentation challenges. On the application side, the orientation of the image features and noise removal has become a huge burden.

Book The Education Dilemma

Download or read book The Education Dilemma written by J. Simmons and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2016-04-20 with total page 279 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Education Dilemma: Policy Issues for Developing Countries in the 1980s focuses on the questions on the adequacy of the Western European and North American model of formal schooling exported to developing countries. The selection first offers information on an overview of the policy issues in the 1980s, future of formal education in developing countries, and factors which promote school achievement in developing countries. Discussions focus on the effect of schooling variables on achievement; comparison of the importance of schooling inputs and home background; educational production function and its limitations; and theories of learning and schooling. The text then examines preschool age investment in human capital, policy implications of instructional technology, and the impact of American educational research on developing countries. The publication takes a look at common assumptions about education and employment, education and employment after independence, and the influence of education on migration and fertility. Topics include education and migration, fertility and education, socializing effects of educational institutions, educational and individual entrepreneurship, and education and access to labor market. The manuscript also surveys education, class conflict, and uneven development and investment in education in developing nations. The selection is a valuable reference for educators and researchers interested in the application of the Western European and North American model of formal schooling to developing countries.

Book Education in Central America and the Caribbean

Download or read book Education in Central America and the Caribbean written by Colin Brock and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2018-05-08 with total page 373 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Originally published in 1990. The Caribbean basin is an extremely diverse area in geographical, ethnic and cultural terms. Its educational systems, too, are remarkably varied, reflecting colonial and religious traditions as well as those of a broad range of post-independence movements. Even these show a pronounced merging of the home-grown and the foreign, with the influence of the superpowers never far away. This book comprises a number of case studies ranging across the Caribbean region. The contributors focus in particular on Puerto Rico, Cuba, Jamaica, the British Virgin Islands, Mexico City, Central America, Costa Rica and Venezuela. By assembling studies from diverse cultural and political traditions and networks, the book gives a more comprehensive Caribbean perspective on education than has hitherto been available.

Book Global Risk Management

Download or read book Global Risk Management written by Louise K. Comfort and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2022-08-31 with total page 262 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The rise and spread of Covid-19 in the beginning of 2020 presents a once-in-a-century challenge and opportunity for decision makers, managers, scholars, and citizens to understand the risks, mitigate its impact and prepare for future crises. Drawing on a global network of scholars, this book presents a comparative analysis of ten nations’ response to a global pandemic, while operating nominally under the framework of the World Health Organization. The book introduces the concept of ‘collective cognition’ as an analytic lens for examining the nations’ response to Covid-19 during the first six months of the emerging pandemic (January – June 2020) and draws out insights for improving systems of global risk management. This book addresses four primary audiences: policy-makers and leaders in nations struggling to contain viruses while guiding their societies under threat; academic researchers, students, and educators engaged in preparing the next generation of professionals committed to investigating emerging risk: managers of non-profit and private organizations that operate and maintain the networks of social, technical, and economic services that are essential to functioning communities; and the informed general public interested in understanding this extraordinary sequence of events and in managing the novel risk of COVID-19 in a more informed, responsible way.
