Book Who is Affected by Unemployment Analysis of the Incidence Rate in Colombia A Qui nes Afecta El Desempleo An lisis De La Tasa De Incidencia En Colombia

Download or read book Who is Affected by Unemployment Analysis of the Incidence Rate in Colombia A Qui nes Afecta El Desempleo An lisis De La Tasa De Incidencia En Colombia written by Nohora Forero and published by . This book was released on 2010 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The analysis of the risk dimension of unemployment adds on the study of issues such as its typology (frictional, structural and cyclical), active-search methods and vulnerability to unemployment. On this sense, the incidence rate of unemployment is a composed indicator which combines both the level of unemployment and the persistence of it (its duration). An analytical decomposition of the different features of unemployment incidence allows for a deeper characterization of vulnerability to the likelihood of becoming unemployed and to remain in such state. We find that in the Colombian labour market there are significant differences between the unemployment rate and the incidence rate, which implies that the outcomes of the labour market are not just explained by the effect of aggregate shocks but by the duration effects of the different labour states, which are also important on explaining the short and long run dynamics of the labour market.

Book Alternatives To Unemployment And Underemployment

Download or read book Alternatives To Unemployment And Underemployment written by Michael Hopkins and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2019-03-05 with total page 146 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The creation of jobs is critical in Third World countries where growing populations face unemployment or inadequate employment. Many have put forth theories and suggestions that address this problem, but there has been insufficient empirical analysis of the effects of specific policies on employment growth. The author examines macroeconomic theories of labour market behavior and labour force definitions and concepts, assessing how productive they are in formulating employment strategies for Colombia. The implications of a range of alternative policies for generating jobs, their effectiveness in reducing unemployment, and possible programs for the future are analyzed.

Book El empleo en crisis

Download or read book El empleo en crisis written by Joana Silva and published by World Bank Publications. This book was released on 2021-09-30 with total page 385 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A region known for its volatility, Latin America and the Caribbean (LAC) has suffered severe economic and social setbacks from crises—including the COVID-19 pandemic. These crises have taken their toll on careers, wage growth, and productivity. Employment in Crisis: The Path to Better Jobs in a Post-COVID-19 Latin America provides new evidence on the effects of crises on the region’s workers and firms and suggests several policy responses that can bolster long-term and inclusive economic growth. This report has three key findings. First, crises lead to persistent employment losses and accelerate structural changes away from the formal sector. This change occurs more through reductions in the creation of formal jobs than through job destruction. Second, some workers recover from crises, while others are permanently scarred by them. Low-skilled workers can suffer up to a decade of lower earnings caused by crises, while high-skilled workers rebound fast, exacerbating the LAC region’s high level of inequality. Formal workers suffer smaller employment and wage losses in localities with higher rates of informality. And the reduced job flows caused by crises decrease welfare, but workers in localities with more job opportunities, whether formal or informal, bounce back better. Third, crises’ cleansing effects can increase efficiency and productivity, but these effects are dampened by the LAC region’s less competitive market structure. Rather than becoming more agile and productive during economic downturns, protected sectors and firms gain market share and crowd out others, trapping valuable resources. This report proposes a three-pronged mix of policies to improve the LAC region’s responses to crises: • Create a more stable macroeconomic environment to smooth the impacts of crises, including automatic stabilizers such as unemployment insurance and short-term compensation programs; • Increase the capacity of social protection and labor programs to respond to crises and coalesce these programs into systems that complement income support with reemployment assistance and reskilling opportunities; and • Tackle structural issues, including the lack of product market competition and the spatial dimension behind poor labor market adjustment—a “good jobs and good firms†? agenda.

Macroeconomic policies are solid and have sustained growth and smooth adjustments to shocks over the years. Maintaining and strengthening the policy framework is key to sustainable macroeconomic policies and setting the basis for higher productivity and inclusiveness. Putting Colombia on a path to stronger and more inclusive growth, and reducing dependence on natural resources, requires boosting productivity by adopting structural reforms in competition, regulations, trade policy, infrastructure, innovation, and skills.
