Book Monoidal Category Theory

Download or read book Monoidal Category Theory written by Noson S. Yanofsky and published by MIT Press. This book was released on 2024-11-05 with total page 669 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A comprehensive, cutting-edge, and highly readable textbook that makes category theory and monoidal category theory accessible to students across the sciences. Category theory is a powerful framework that began in mathematics but has since expanded to encompass several areas of computing and science, with broad applications in many fields. In this comprehensive text, Noson Yanofsky makes category theory accessible to those without a background in advanced mathematics. Monoidal Category Theorydemonstrates the expansive uses of categories, and in particular monoidal categories, throughout the sciences. The textbook starts from the basics of category theory and progresses to cutting edge research. Each idea is defined in simple terms and then brought alive by many real-world examples before progressing to theorems and uncomplicated proofs. Richly guided exercises ground readers in concrete computation and application. The result is a highly readable and engaging textbook that will open the world of category theory to many. Makes category theory accessible to non-math majors Uses easy-to-understand language and emphasizes diagrams over equations Incremental, iterative approach eases students into advanced concepts A series of embedded mini-courses cover such popular topics as quantum computing, categorical logic, self-referential paradoxes, databases and scheduling, and knot theory Extensive exercises and examples demonstrate the broad range of applications of categorical structures Modular structure allows instructors to fit text to the needs of different courses Instructor resources include slides

Book Fourier Techniques and Applications

Download or read book Fourier Techniques and Applications written by John F. Price and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 232 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The first systematic methods of Fourier analysis date from the early eighteenth century with the work of Joseph Fourier on the problem of the flow of heat. (A brief history is contained in the first paper.) Given the initial tempera ture at all points of a region, the problem was to determine the changes in the temperature distribution over time. Understanding and predicting these changes was important in such areas as the handling of metals and the determination of geological and atmospheric temperatures. Briefly, Fourier noticed that the solution of the heat diffusion problem was simple if the initial temperature dis tribution was sinusoidal. He then asserted that any distri bution can be decomposed into a sum of sinusoids, these being the harmonics of the original function. This meant that the general solution could now be obtained by summing the solu tions of the component sinusoidal problems. This remarkable ability of the series of sinusoids to describe all "reasonable" functions, the sine qua non of Fourier analysis and synthesis, has led to the routine use of the methods originating with Fourier in a great diversity of areas - astrophysics, computing, economics, electrical engineering, geophysics, information theory, medical engineering, optics, petroleum and mineral exploration, quan tum physics and spectroscopy, to name a few.

Book Mathematics from Leningrad to Austin

Download or read book Mathematics from Leningrad to Austin written by Rudolph A. Lorentz and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 1997-07-15 with total page 606 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This "Select a" contains approximately two thirds of the papers my 1932 to 1994. These papers are divided into four fields. father wrote from The first volume contains the papers on 1) Summability and Number Theory and 2) Interpolation. The second volume contains the fields 3) Real and Functional Analysis and 4) Approximation Theory. Each of these four groups of papers is introduced by a review of the contents and significance, respectively of the impact of these papers. The first volume contains, in addition, an autobiography, a complete list of publications, a list of doctoral students and four unpublished essays on mathematics in general: a) A report on the University of Leningrad b) On the work of the mathematical mind c) Proofs in Mathematics d) About Mathematical books. The report on the University of Leningrad, written in the late '40's, is a unique historical document which is still of current interest for several reasons. It is of interest for professional reasons since it contains a com plete description of a mathematics majors' curriculum through his entire course of studies. From it one can see both the changes and invariants of course material as well as the students' course load. Then one can also see the consequences of admittedly extreme political intervention in uni versity affairs. Today we use the term "politically correct", but in those times being politically correct was a matter of life and death.

Book excerpt: This book, gathering the Proceedings of the 2018 Computing Conference, offers a remarkable collection of chapters covering a wide range of topics in intelligent systems, computing and their real-world applications. The Conference attracted a total of 568 submissions from pioneering researchers, scientists, industrial engineers, and students from all around the world. These submissions underwent a double-blind peer review process. Of those 568 submissions, 192 submissions (including 14 poster papers) were selected for inclusion in these proceedings. Despite computer science’s comparatively brief history as a formal academic discipline, it has made a number of fundamental contributions to science and society—in fact, along with electronics, it is a founding science of the current epoch of human history (‘the Information Age’) and a main driver of the Information Revolution. The goal of this conference is to provide a platform for researchers to present fundamental contributions, and to be a premier venue for academic and industry practitioners to share new ideas and development experiences. This book collects state of the art chapters on all aspects of Computer Science, from classical to intelligent. It covers both the theory and applications of the latest computer technologies and methodologies. Providing the state of the art in intelligent methods and techniques for solving real-world problems, along with a vision of future research, the book will be interesting and valuable for a broad readership.
