Book Descriptors for Papaya

Download or read book Descriptors for Papaya written by International Board for Plant Genetic Resources and published by Bioversity International. This book was released on 1988 with total page 40 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This IBPGR descriptor list for papaya (carica papaya L.) was prepared in consultation with a number of experts on the crop, the major contributors being Dr P.J. Ito of the University of Hawaii, and Dr. T. Badra, formerly of the National Horticultural Research Institute, Ibadan, Nigeria. A complete list of contributors is provided in the appendix. IBPGR encourages the collection of data on the first four categories of this list: 1. Accession; 2. Collection; 3. and 4. Characterization and preliminary evaluation. IBPGR endorses the information in categories 1-4 as the minimum that ideally should be available for any one accession. Other descriptors are given in categories 5 onwards that will enable the simple encoding of further characterization and evaluation data and which can serve as examoles for the crrrreation of additional descriptors in the IBPGR form by any user. Although the suggested coding should not be regarded as the definitive scheme, this format has the full backing of IBPGR and is promoted worldwide. The descriptor list given here provides an international format and thereby produces a universally understood 'language' for all plant genetic resources data.

Book Allele Mining for Genomic Designing of Fruit Crops

Download or read book Allele Mining for Genomic Designing of Fruit Crops written by Chittaranjan Kole and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2024-03-29 with total page 555 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book deliberates on the concept, strategies, tools, and techniques of allele mining in fruit crops and its application potential in genome elucidation and improvement including studying allele evolution, discovery of superior alleles, discerning new haplotypes, assessment of intra- and interspecific similarity, and also studies of gene expression and gene prediction. Available gene pools in global germplasm collections specifically consisting of wild allied species and local landraces for almost all major crops have facilitated allele mining. Advanced genomic techniques have been developed including PCR-based allele priming and Eco-TILLING-based allele mining that are being widely used now for mining superior alleles. Allele discovery has become more relevant now for employing molecular breeding to develop designed crop varieties matching with consumer needs and also with genome plasticity to adapt the climate change scenarios. All these concepts and strategies along with precise success stories are presented over the chapters dedicated to the major fruit crops. The features of this book are as follows: The first book on the novel strategy of allele mining in fruit crops for precise breeding Presents genomic strategies of mining superior alleles underlying agronomic traits from genomic resources Depicts case studies of PCR-based allele priming and Eco-TILLING-based allele mining Elaborates on gene discovery and gene prediction in major fruit crops This book will be useful to students and faculties in various plant science disciplines including genetics, genomics, molecular breeding, agronomy, and bioinformatics; scientists in seed industries; and also policy makers and funding agencies interested in crop improvement.

Book Pawpaw

Download or read book Pawpaw written by Andrew Moore and published by Chelsea Green Publishing. This book was released on 2015-08-05 with total page 330 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The largest edible fruit native to the United States tastes like a cross between a banana and a mango. It grows wild in twenty-six states, gracing Eastern forests each fall with sweet-smelling, tropical-flavored abundance. Historically, it fed and sustained Native Americans and European explorers, presidents, and enslaved African Americans, inspiring folk songs, poetry, and scores of place names from Georgia to Illinois. Its trees are an organic grower’s dream, requiring no pesticides or herbicides to thrive, and containing compounds that are among the most potent anticancer agents yet discovered. So why have so few people heard of the pawpaw, much less tasted one? In Pawpaw—a 2016 James Beard Foundation Award nominee in the Writing & Literature category—author Andrew Moore explores the past, present, and future of this unique fruit, traveling from the Ozarks to Monticello; canoeing the lower Mississippi in search of wild fruit; drinking pawpaw beer in Durham, North Carolina; tracking down lost cultivars in Appalachian hollers; and helping out during harvest season in a Maryland orchard. Along the way, he gathers pawpaw lore and knowledge not only from the plant breeders and horticulturists working to bring pawpaws into the mainstream (including Neal Peterson, known in pawpaw circles as the fruit’s own “Johnny Pawpawseed”), but also regular folks who remember eating them in the woods as kids, but haven’t had one in over fifty years. As much as Pawpaw is a compendium of pawpaw knowledge, it also plumbs deeper questions about American foodways—how economic, biologic, and cultural forces combine, leading us to eat what we eat, and sometimes to ignore the incredible, delicious food growing all around us. If you haven’t yet eaten a pawpaw, this book won’t let you rest until you do.

Book excerpt: “With this valuable book, you can pawpaw your own food forests, restoring the diversity, abundance, and climate we all need.” —Albert Bates, permaculture instructor, ecovillage designer, author of The Biochar Solution Pawpaws is the first in-depth guide to small-scale commercial cultivation of pawpaws. Also known as Indiana bananas or hipster bananas, this almost forgotten fruit, native to North America, is making a huge comeback with foodies, chefs, craft brewers, and discerning fruit-lovers. Written by, and for, the organic grower, coverage includes: Botany and the cultural history of pawpaws Orchard siting and planning Choosing the best-quality nursery trees Descriptions of over fifty cultivars Propagation and organic growing tips Pests and disease management Marketing and selling fresh pawpaws, seeds, and starts Processing and producing value-added products. Get ahead of the farming curve, diversify your orchard or food forest, and discover the commercial potential of America’s almost forgotten native fruit with this comprehensive manual to small-scale commercial pawpaw production. “Blake Cothron is an authority on pawpaws and provides a clear, detailed guide for commercial success in growing this ‘oddly appealing species’ (his own words). The supply of this exotic, trending, easy-to-grow fruit has not yet met the demand. Blake shares the wealth of his knowledge, including challenges—and when he doesn’t know, he says so (it’s probable that others don’t know either).” —Pam Dawling, author of Sustainable Market Farming “The pawpaw’s revival is long overdue. Blake Cothron’s Pawpaws will help bring about the day when fragrant fruit is no longer a rare treat, but a regular part of our seasonal diet.” —Darrell E. Frey, Three Sisters Farm, author of Bioshelter Market Garden
