Book Explorations into a Dynamic Process Oriented Soil Science

Download or read book Explorations into a Dynamic Process Oriented Soil Science written by Douglas S Frink and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2011-07-01 with total page 126 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The paradigm and models of traditional soil science lack the ability to adequately address issues of soil dynamics, environmental integration, and change. Unexplainable research results obtained from traditional soil studies applied to non-traditional soil phenomena in physical geography, archaeology and ecology speak to the current need for soil science to move beyond description and classification and into a dynamic process-oriented soil science capable of providing explanations. Soils do not behave as static inert geologic detritus affected by climate, organisms, relief, and parent material through time, but instead soils behave as self-organizing systems dynamically interrelating with their environment. Recognition of this dynamic behaviour required a re-examination of how scientists in general think and in how modern soil science specifically evolved its basic paradigms and models. This book examines the dynamics of soil organic carbon and demonstrates the self-organizing nature of soil through time as soil responds to a wide range of environmental and human perturbations. Makes soil science accessible to a wider audience by integrating soil science with biology, geography and archaeology Demonstrates universal application by including case studies from around the world Avoids pitfalls of determinism and vitalism by being well founded in the philosophy of science

Book Guidelines for Soil Description

Download or read book Guidelines for Soil Description written by Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations and published by Food & Agriculture Org.. This book was released on 2006 with total page 116 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Soils are affected by human activities, such as industrial, municipal and agriculture, that often result in soil degradation and loss. In order to prevent soil degradation and to rehabilitate the potentials of degraded soils, reliable soil data are the most important prerequisites for the design of appropriate land-use systems and soil management practices as well as for a better understanding of the environment. The availability of reliable information on soil morphology and other characteristics obtained through examination and description of the soil in the field is essential, and the use of a common language is of prime importance. These guidelines, based on the latest internationally accepted systems and classifications, provide a complete procedure for soil description and for collecting field data. To help beginners, some explanatory notes are included as well as keys based on simple test and observations.--Publisher's description.

Book Essentials in Soil Science

Download or read book Essentials in Soil Science written by Henry Wang and published by . This book was released on 2015-03-05 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The dependence of humans on soil and curiosity regarding it is leading to the investigation of alterations within soil processes. The diversity and dynamics of soil are creating scope for novel discoveries and insights, which enable us to comprehend the variation in soil processes. As a result, this allows us to take the required steps for the protection of soil and subsequently promoting soil health. The aim of this book is to give an updated account on the present state of knowledge about recent evaluations and practices in soil science. Moreover, it provides a descriptive assessment about the impact of residue/waste application on soil properties and the mechanism of plant development and adaptation. Interesting examples of simulation employing distinct models dealing with ecosystem respiration, carbon sequestration, soil landscape etc. have been illustrated. This book also contains information regarding analysis of areal data and geostatistics by employing various evaluation techniques. Current progresses in analytical methods used for obtaining answers to the diverse physical mechanisms, biological and chemical processes in soil have also been elucidated in this book.

Book Field Book for Describing and Sampling Soils

Download or read book Field Book for Describing and Sampling Soils written by National Soil Survey Center and published by www.Militarybookshop.CompanyUK. This book was released on 2012-09 with total page 298 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From the foreword: Purpose: The following instructions, definitions, concepts, and codes are a field guide for making or reading soil descriptions and sampling soils as presently practiced in the USA. (Note: References cited in the foreword are listed at the end of Chapter 1 [p. 1-31].) Background: Soil description methodology was developed by soil scientists throughout the entire course of the soil survey. The USDA published small instruction booklets for field parties, including soil descriptions, in 1902-1904, 1906, and 1914. The first USDA guide for soil horizon identification and description was released in 1937 (Bureau of Chemistry and Soils, 1937). Dr. Roy Simonson and others later summarized and revised this information (Soil Survey Staff, 1951; Soil Survey Staff, 1962). Brief "color-book" inserts with shorthand notation were released by the Soil Conservation Service (Spartanburg, SC, 1961; Western Technical Center, Portland, OR, 1974). Previous Field Books were released in 1998 (Schoeneberger et al.) and 2002 (Schoeneberger et al.). This is an updated field Book version that summarizes current knowledge, includes updates since 2002, and reflects changes in source documents. Standards: This field Book summarizes and updates current National Cooperative Soil Survey conventions for describing soils (Soil Survey Manual [Soil Survey Division Staff, 1993]; National Soil Survey andbook [Soil Survey Staff, 2012d]; National Soil Information System (NAS S), release 6.2 [Soil Survey Staff,2012c]; and NASS Data Dictionary [Soil Survey Staff, 2012a]). Some content is an abbreviation of primary sources.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This textbook is aimed at the majority of students, who need to quickly acquire a concise overview of soil science. Many current soil science textbooks still cater for a traditional student market where students embark on three years study in a narrow discipline. The growth in modular degree schemes has meant that soil science is now often taught as self-standing unit as part of broad based degree program. Students pursuing this type of course are increasingly reluctant to purchase expensive textbooks that are too detailed and often assume a scientific background. For those opting to specialise in soil science there are a variety of good textbooks to choose from. This short informative guide, will be particularly useful for students who do not possess a traditional scientific background, such as those studying geography, environment science, ecology and agriculture. Only textbook to cater for introductory courses in soil science. Provides an affordable concise overview of soil science. Learning exercises and chapter summaries enhance usability. Annotated suggestions for further reading. Based on proven and successful modular course structure. Emphasis on readability and interactive learning. No scientific background assumed.

Book A Handbook of Soil Terminology Correlation and Classification

Download or read book A Handbook of Soil Terminology Correlation and Classification written by Pavel Krasilnikov and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2009-12-01 with total page 450 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Soil classification and terminology are fundamental issues for the clear understanding and communication of the subject. However, while there are many national soil classification systems, these do not directly correlate with each other. This leads to confusion and great difficulty in undertaking comparative scientific research that draws on more than one system and in making sense of international scientific papers using a system that is unfamiliar to the reader. This book aims to clarify this position by describing and comparing different systems and evaluating them in the context of the World Reference Base (WRB) for Soil Resources. The latter was set up to resolve these problems by creating an international 'umbrella' system for soil correlation. All soil scientists should then classify soils using the WRB as well as their national systems. The book is a definitive and essential reference work for all students studying soils as part of life, earth or environmental sciences, as well as professional soil scientists.
