Download or read book Liturgy Books and Franciscan Identity in Medieval Umbria written by Anna Welch and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2015-09-29 with total page 283 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Liturgy, Books and Franciscan Identity in Medieval Umbria, Anna Welch explores how Franciscan friars engaged with manuscript production networks operating in Umbria in the late thirteenth and early fourteenth centuries to produce the missals essential to their liturgical lives. A micro-history of Franciscan liturgical activity, this study reassesses methodologies pertinent to manuscript studies and reflects on both the construction of communal identity through ritual activity and historiographic trends regarding this process. Welch focuses on manuscripts decorated by the ateliers of the Maestro di Deruta-Salerno (active c. 1280) and Maestro Venturella di Pietro (active c. 1317), in particular the Codex Sancti Paschalis, a missal now owned by the Australian Province of the Order of Friars Minor.

Download or read book Her Story in Four Centuries written by Sylvia Webber and published by Strategic Book Publishing & Rights Agency. This book was released on 2014-08-11 with total page 317 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This heart-warming book of true stories is about women who lived during four different centuries. It testifies to the strength of mind of women forced to cope with wars and illness while protecting and educating their children, and it shows how family members worked together as the British Empire spread. Margaret Rudston was caught up in the English Civil War. When her husband died, she had to fight in court to keep the family property. Margaret’s solicitor gave her copies of poems by John Donne, which now reside in the Folger Library in Washington, D.C. Maria Barstow endured twenty years of wars in Danzig (now Gdansk in Poland), where her house was inhabited at different times by the future queen of Holland, the French army, Napoleon, and the Russian army. Some of her children were sent to England. Mrs. Jones and her children fled from Ireland when the French landed to support a rebellion. The daughters of the hymn writer, the Rev. Thomas Kelly, lived in Ireland through illness and the famine. They learned painting from Maria Spilsbury and wrote memoirs. Joan Webber taught in Malaya (now Malaysia), and escaped to Australia with her children during World War II, while her husband was fighting the Japanese. The family later settled in Tasmania. One of her children, author Sylvia Webber writes how war, separation, and boarding school affected her. These stories show families pulling together, helping the human spirit to survive.
Download or read book Reading in the Wilderness written by Jessica Brantley and published by University of Chicago Press. This book was released on 2008-09-15 with total page 491 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Just as twenty-first-century technologies like blogs and wikis have transformed the once private act of reading into a public enterprise, devotional reading experiences in the Middle Ages were dependent upon an oscillation between the solitary and the communal. In Reading in the Wilderness, Jessica Brantley uses tools from both literary criticism and art history to illuminate Additional MS 37049, an illustrated Carthusian miscellany housed in the British Library. This revealing artifact, Brantley argues, closes the gap between group spectatorship and private study in late medieval England. Drawing on the work of W. J. T. Mitchell, Michael Camille, and others working at the image-text crossroads, Reading in the Wilderness addresses the manuscript’s texts and illustrations to examine connections between reading and performance within the solitary monk’s cell and also outside. Brantley reimagines the medieval codex as a site where the meanings of images and words are performed, both publicly and privately, in the act of reading.
Download or read book Medievalism and the Academy II written by David Metzger and published by Boydell & Brewer. This book was released on 2000 with total page 266 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The second part of Medievalism and the Academy identifies the four specific questions that have come to focus recent scholarship in medievalism: What is difference? what is theory? woman? God? The impact of cultural studies on contemporary medieval studies is investigated in this latest volume of Studies in Medievalism, which also offers an account of the developing interest of contemporary cultural theorists inthe medieval period. Rather than dismissing the connection between medieval studies and cultural criticism as an expression of academic self-interest, the essays identify specific questions which engage both, such as race, history, women, religion, and literature. Topics include the use of Augustine by postcolonial theorists; the influence of studies in medieval mysticism on the development of women's studies programs; and the influence of Foucault and NewHistoricism on the study of medieval history.
