These features may not work on all ebook readers. We organize things. We organize information, information about things, and information about information. Organizing is a fundamental issue in many professional fields, but these fields have only limited agreement in how they approach problems of organizing and in what they seek as their solutions. The Discipline of Organizing synthesizes insights from library science, information science, computer science, cognitive science, systems analysis, business, and other disciplines to create an Organizing System for understanding organizing. This framework is robust and forward-looking, enabling effective sharing of insights and design patterns between disciplines that weren’t possible before. The Professional Edition includes new and revised content about the active resources of the "Internet of Things," and how the field of Information Architecture can be viewed as a subset of the discipline of organizing. You’ll find: 600 tagged endnotes that connect to one or more of the contributing disciplines Nearly 60 new pictures and illustrations Links to cross-references and external citations Interactive study guides to test on key points The Professional Edition is ideal for practitioners and as a primary or supplemental text for graduate courses on information organization, content and knowledge management, and digital collections. FOR INSTRUCTORS: Supplemental materials (lecture notes, assignments, exams, etc.) are available at http://disciplineoforganizing.org. FOR STUDENTS: Make sure this is the edition you want to buy. There's a newer one and maybe your instructor has adopted that one instead.

Book Language Typology and Syntactic Description Volume 1 Clause Structure

Download or read book Language Typology and Syntactic Description Volume 1 Clause Structure written by Timothy Shopen and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2007-10-04 with total page 24 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This unique three-volume survey brings together a team of leading scholars to explore the syntactic and morphological structures of the world's languages. Clearly organized and broad-ranging, it covers topics such as parts-of-speech, passives, complementation, relative clauses, adverbial clauses, inflectional morphology, tense, aspect, mood, and diexis. The contributors look at the major ways that these notions are realized, and provide informative sketches of them at work in a range of languages. Each volume is accessibly written and clearly explains each new concept introduced. Although the volumes can be read independently, together they provide an indispensable reference work for all linguists and fieldworkers interested in cross-linguistic generalizations. Volume I covers parts-of-speech systems, word order, the noun phrase, clause types, speech act distinctions, the passive, and information packaging in the clause.

Book Discovering the Brain

    Book Details:
  • Author : National Academy of Sciences
  • Publisher : National Academies Press
  • Release : 1992-01-01
  • ISBN : 0309045290
  • Pages : 195 pages

Download or read book Discovering the Brain written by National Academy of Sciences and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 1992-01-01 with total page 195 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The brain ... There is no other part of the human anatomy that is so intriguing. How does it develop and function and why does it sometimes, tragically, degenerate? The answers are complex. In Discovering the Brain, science writer Sandra Ackerman cuts through the complexity to bring this vital topic to the public. The 1990s were declared the "Decade of the Brain" by former President Bush, and the neuroscience community responded with a host of new investigations and conferences. Discovering the Brain is based on the Institute of Medicine conference, Decade of the Brain: Frontiers in Neuroscience and Brain Research. Discovering the Brain is a "field guide" to the brainâ€"an easy-to-read discussion of the brain's physical structure and where functions such as language and music appreciation lie. Ackerman examines: How electrical and chemical signals are conveyed in the brain. The mechanisms by which we see, hear, think, and pay attentionâ€"and how a "gut feeling" actually originates in the brain. Learning and memory retention, including parallels to computer memory and what they might tell us about our own mental capacity. Development of the brain throughout the life span, with a look at the aging brain. Ackerman provides an enlightening chapter on the connection between the brain's physical condition and various mental disorders and notes what progress can realistically be made toward the prevention and treatment of stroke and other ailments. Finally, she explores the potential for major advances during the "Decade of the Brain," with a look at medical imaging techniquesâ€"what various technologies can and cannot tell usâ€"and how the public and private sectors can contribute to continued advances in neuroscience. This highly readable volume will provide the public and policymakersâ€"and many scientists as wellâ€"with a helpful guide to understanding the many discoveries that are sure to be announced throughout the "Decade of the Brain."

Book Glycogen Phosphorylase B Description Of The Protein Structure

Download or read book Glycogen Phosphorylase B Description Of The Protein Structure written by Louise N Johnson and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 1991-02-22 with total page 136 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This monograph describes the determination by X-ray methods and the structural analysis of one of the largest single polypeptide chain proteins, glycogen phosphorylase. It is shown that the large protein conforms to the rules deduced from smaller protein molecules and provides examples of almost every structural feature. The structure is analysed with special reference to the hydrogen bonding pattern of secondary structural elements, the distributions and interactions of the buried amino acids, the role of the water structure and the details of the subunit interface of the dimer. The results show some unusual secondary structural elements and environments for some side chain atoms. As methods for prediction of protein structures from amino acid sequences advance from assignments of secondary structural elements to predicted tertiary assemblies, knowledge of the preferred and exceptional detailed interactions of the amino acid side chains will need to be incorporated. Glycogen phosphorylase provides a wealth of examples of these interactions. This monograph is a useful reference on protein structure and function.
