Book excerpt: Excerpt from Descriptions of New Genera and Species of Coleoptera, Vol. 4 It contains descriptions of ten new genera and 173 species. All the new genera, and 140 Of the species, are the result Oi Mr. T. Hall's Skill and untiring perseverence, during the winter as well as the more favourable and pleasanter collecting seasons. Mr. A. E. Brookes, Of Mount Albert, discovered eleven, Mr. A. Philpott, of Invercargill, Six, Mr. H. W. Sim monds, of Wellington, Six, Mr. J. H. Lewis, one the remainder belong to my own collection. The delay In publishing my last paper, the work Of 1914, added greatly to the difficulties encountered when investigating the structural details of the species enumerated in the following list. Only those actually engaged in scientific work of this kind can form any idea of the complications created by inability to refer to printed descriptions Of previously named members of an Order now known to exceed four thousand species. Even the nomenclature, especially when species belong to genera represented in other parts of the world, has become a Very troublesome undertaking. Book Catalogue of the Coleoptera of America North of Mexico Classic Reprint

Download or read book Catalogue of the Coleoptera of America North of Mexico Classic Reprint written by Charles William Leng and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-03-18 with total page 482 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Catalogue of the Coleoptera of America, North of Mexico The aim Of this catalogue is to enumerate systematically all the Species of Coleoptera described prior to January 1, 1919, which occur in America, north of Mexico, Greenland included; with consecutive numbers, synonyms, citation of original description, and an indication of distribution. An effort has been made to arrange the species in genera, tribes, families, superfamilies and series, in accordance with the most recent works on classification; an explanation of the difficulty of doing so in a satisfactory manner follows this preface. No attempt has been made to determine the validity of the numerous Specific names proposed by recent authors. Numbered names indicate species described and unquestioned in print. A letter, a, b, etc., following the numeral indicates variety, subspecies, race, etc. Names proposed by one author and disputed by another, are usually unnumbered, but are sometimes treated as varieties. Synonyms are always unnumbered, but the reader must guard against regarding unnumbered names as being invariably synonyms, for they often represent forms which, to their authors, seemed worthy of a name. The names of authors are usually abbreviated to the first three or four letters of their names; the few cases which are differently treated are explained below in the list of Signs and abbreviations used. Authors' names are usually in parenthesis if the species was originally described in a different genus; the correct placing of the parenthesis involved reference to many books and is not entirely complete. The citations are indicated by figures following the author's name; the first two are the final figures of the year in which the description was published; the remainder, separated by a hyphen, give the page on which the description occurs. In conjunction with the chrono logical list of each author's papers at the end of the book, the citation is thus given in the most condensed form possible. The distribution is indicated by the usual geographical abbreviations (explained below) for the localities given in original descriptions and in various faunal lists. Intermediate localities have Usually been omitted to save space, but particular care has been taken to include references to the extremities of the area covered, e. G., Newfoundland, Alaska. Book A Catalogue of Lucanoid Coleoptera

Download or read book A Catalogue of Lucanoid Coleoptera written by F. J. Sidney Parry and published by . This book was released on 2016-06-22 with total page 240 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Catalogue of Lucanoid Coleoptera: With Illustrations and Descriptions of Various New and Interesting Species The most important collections of the species of this division are to be found in the cabinets of Count Mniszech and Mr. Thomson at Paris (the latter especially interesting as including the species from the collections of Count Dejean, M. Laferte and M. Reiche), in the British Museum, and in the cabinets ofthe late Rev. F. W. Hope (so liberally presented to the University of Oxford) and Mr. W. W. Saunders; and, lastly, in my own col lection, which contains, I believe, the largest number of species ever brought together. With reference to the respective families it is not my intention to propose any very great change in the classification; nevertheless I feel that much in this respect is still required, but it appears to me that the period for such re-organization has not yet arrived, a greater knowledge of species being absolutely requisite for under taking such a task. Should our collections continue to be en riched as they have been of recent years, this desirable object might then be successfully undertaken, for I am convinced that it is only by placing before the eye a sufficient series of the insect to be described (and this is more especially true of the Lucanoid Coleoptera) that a just appreciation of its general form and character can he arrived at. It is vain to expect to ascertain the true characters ofa genus until the species shall themselves have been properly established; and the development of species so peculiar in the Lucanoid Coleoptera has but too often given rise to great confusion, specimens having not unfrequently been mistaken by Entomologists as the types of distinct species, and described as such, when in fact they were but varieties of species previously known. As already stated, this, my tribute to the Society, must be considered simply as a rectified catalogue, including notices, descriptions and figures of various new and interesting species.
