The work includes a complete history of Westmoreland County as it formerly existed, up until Washington, Fayette and Allegheny counties were carved from it. Indeed, the author has devoted more space to the formative period of this section than any previous writer, and we believe he has thoroughly laid the interesting features of its history before the reader. For a third of a century after the first settlements were made in Southwestern Pennsylvania, the history of this section is made up of a strange commingling of tragedy and romance on the one hand, and of privations and exertions on the other. Though the reader may be sometimes taken away from the immediate locality of which the work treats, he will always find that the subject under consideration is one which deeply concerns Westmoreland history. The American Revolution covered many fields of action, and the operations on each con tributed to the grand result. The men who defended the western border against the savage tribes were doing their work essential to the cause of freedom as well as the ragged Continentals who faced British and Hessian battalions in New York or New Jersey. Naturally the operations in the East, where the main conflict raged and the issue was decided, have received the chief attention of historians; but the struggles on the west ern frontier have been unduly neglected. Some attention has been given to the revolutionary history of the New York and Tennessee frontiers, but no book tells, in con nected form, of the important operations in that great trans montane region of which Ft. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Westmoreland County, Pennsylvania: An Inventory of Historic Engineering and Industrial Sites The objectives of the Historic American Engineering Record (haer) Inventory are threefold: (1) it is the initial step in the haer documentation process; historic engineering and industrial sites in a given geographic area are located and identified; (2) it assists states in evaluating these historic resources for planning purposes and for potential nominations to the National Register; and (3) it establishes a context for evaluation by the National Park Service of the historic engineering and industrial sites nominated by the states to the National Register, or for determinations of eligibility to the National Register of Historic Places. All of the haer inventory material is deposited in the Prints and Photographs Division of the Library of Congress in Washington, D.C. This includes the many 35 mm black-and-white photographs taken in the field, along with copies of the inventory forms containing the brief histories and descriptions for each site. Haer recognizes the importance of publishing the inventories; however, project sponsors are generally required to cover the costs of printing. The published inventory, available to the general public, is used in educational institutions, to study technological, industrial, and engineering history, historic preservation, the history of urban planning, and cultural geography. Published inventories are also distributed to state, county, and local planning offices, libraries, and preservation agencies. The haer inventories thus expand the awareness of engineering and industrial history, demonstrate consistent methods of identification and evaluation, and stimulate public interest in a significant part of our American heritage.
