Book Description and Physiological Botany Vol 3 Classic Reprint

Download or read book Description and Physiological Botany Vol 3 Classic Reprint written by J. S. Henslow and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-03-22 with total page 334 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Description and Physiological Botany, Vol. 3 Botany. - In the most extended sense of the term, Botany may be considered as embracing every inquiry which can be made into the various phenomena connected with one of the three great departments into which the study of nature is divided, and which is familiarly styled the Vegetable Kingdom. And this inquiry should extend as well to the investigation of the outward forms and conditions in which plants, whether recent or fossil, are met with, as to the exa mination of the various functions which they perform whilst in the living state, and to the laws by which their distribution on the earth's surface is regulated. We may conveniently arrange these several phenomena under two heads. The one may be called the Descriptive department of the science, being de voted to the examination, description, and classification of all the circumstances connected with the external configuration and internal structure of plants, which we here consider in much the same light as so many pieces of machinery, more or less complicated in their structure; but of whose several parts we must first obtain some general knowledge, before we can expect to understand their mode of operation, or to appreciate the ends which each was in tended to effect. In the Physiological, which is the other department, we consider these machines as it were in action and we are here to investigate the phenomena which result from the presence of the living principle, Operating in conjunction with the two forces of attraction and afinity, to which all natural bodies are subject. This book was released on 2017-10-22 with total page 400 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Textbook of Plant Physiology Plant physiology is an inseparable part of botany. It is closely connected with the study of morphology and anatomy of plants, since without a sufficient knowledge of plant structure an effective study of physiology is hardly possible. Recently plant physiology has been forming connections not only with plant ecology and plant geography but also with taxonomy. Plant physiology is passing gradually from the study of activities common to all plants to a consideration of the physiological distinctions that exist between various groups or even species. This book was released on 2017-05-22 with total page 230 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Textbook of Botany for Colleges and Universities, Vol. 1: Part II, Physiology We recognize that the presentation of the three great subjects here included is very compact, but the book is not intended for reading and recitation. The teacher is expected to use it for suggestive material and for its organization; the student is expected to use it in relating his observations to one another and to the general points of view that the book seeks to develop. There is a continuity of presentation in each part, so that random selection may miss the largest meaning. For example, in the part on morphology, the thread upon which the facts are strung is the evolution of the plant kingdom, and each plant introduced has its peculiar application in illustrating some phase of this evolution. When certain groups are selected for laboratory study, therefore, the intervening text should be read. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Practical Text Book of Plant Physiology Classic Reprint

Download or read book Practical Text Book of Plant Physiology Classic Reprint written by Daniel Trembly Macdougal and published by . This book was released on 2015-08-05 with total page 368 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Practical d104-Book of Plant Physiology The extension of knowledge in all departments of botany during the last few years has widened the application of the principles of physiology; and altered the relative importance of many phases of the subject. The most notable development consists of the universal recognition of the underlying and basal importance of the irritability of the organism; "that there is no vital process which is uninfluenced by stimuli, which permit, cause, restrict, or regulate the particular action in question." A second conception of no less importance is that of the intricate correlation existing between all of the activities of the vegetal organism, and the reciprocal interaction of all physiological stimuli. The arrangement of the subject in the following pages is an effort to place before the student a method by which a working knowledge of the physiological complex of the plant may be acquired. The disposition of the subject matter entailed by this treatment consists, briefly stated, in the study of the particular functions and properties of the organism, in connection with the agencies and forces which influence or initiate them, and a consideration of the general processes of plant life. To this end the first portion of the book, inclusive of chapters I. - VII., is devoted chiefly to the special forms of irritability exhibited by typical organisms, and the second part is taken up with a more critical consideration of the broader phases of the activity of the plant: a treatment of the subject well adapted to the convenience of the independent worker, and to the exigencies of instruction. Book Plant Physiology Classic Reprint

Download or read book Plant Physiology Classic Reprint written by Nicolai A. Maximov and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-27 with total page 504 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Plant Physiology The main Objective in preparing this volume has been to present, in a brief and compact form, to the students of our universities and agricultural colleges and to our future technical agriculturists clear and exact information concerning the life and vital functions of green plants. Such information should help them to understand the Significance of various methods that are being applied in agricultural practice to increase the yield and improve its quality. The ultimate purpose of the study of plant physiology is to control the growth and development of the plant in order to satisfy the need of mankind for plant materials as well as to provide forage crops for livestock. Such control is possible only on the basis of a fundamental study of the life of the plant as a whole, as well as in its separate constituent processes. Analysis of all the vital processes occurring in the plant is, therefore, a very important part of physiology, and experimentation forms the basic method for revealing the laws controlling the vital processes. But analysis should not obscure the synthetic problems of plant physiology or the presentation of the whole life of the plant as a united organism; on the contrary, they should be intimately coordinated. Book Plant Physiology and Ecology Classic Reprint

Download or read book Plant Physiology and Ecology Classic Reprint written by Frederic Edward Clements and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-20 with total page 338 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Plant Physiology and Ecology The point of view and the methods of study first advanced in "Research Methods in Ecology" have proved so satisfactory in teaching as to make it desirable to embody them in a text-book. The present text has been based largely upon "Research Methods," though most of the matter is new or rewritten. The manner of treatment is essentially the same, but the subject-matter has been rearranged and broken up into a larger number of chapters. The plant is first considered as an individual, with respect to factor, function, and form, and then as a member of a plant group or formation. The reasons for regarding ecology and physiology as essentially the same have been given elsewhere, and need not be repeated here. An endeavor has been made to give the various parts of this vast field their proper importance. Since ecology and physiology are merged, it is manifestly impossible to give to either what would be regarded as a complete treatment by a specialist in either line. No attempt has been made to touch all the points in each, but it is thought that nothing really fundamental has been omitted. The book is intended for use with classes in second-year botany in college and university. In manuscript form, it has been in such use for two years with good results. Although the amount of laboratory and field work is large, it is possible to accomplish all of it in a course requiring 6-8 hours of laboratory time each week. This can be done only by careful planning on the art of both instructor and student, and for this reason the following suggestions are offered as aids. The instructor will find it imperative to plan in advance for the experiments for the whole year, in order that plants may be ready as needed. Seeds and fruits for the study of migration should be collected in the fall. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book The Physiology of Plants Vol 3

Download or read book The Physiology of Plants Vol 3 written by W. Pfeffer and published by . This book was released on 2015-08-05 with total page 466 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Physiology of Plants, Vol. 3: A Treatise Upon the Metabolism and Sources of Energy in Plants As in the previous volume a certain condensation has been effected in the present one, in spite of a slight increase in the subject-matter. All additions or interpolations are, however, enclosed in square brackets, except in the sections dealing with tendril-climbers, with protoplasmic streaming, and with the mechanics of water-transport, to which a few explanatory figures have also been added. The appendix gives a summary of the more important literature which has appeared since the issue of the final part of the German edition, and notices of other recent works are interpolated in the foot-notes. In regard to terminology, it has been the aim throughout to avoid the introduction of any new terms into the text of the English edition unless the weightiest reasons existed for their adoption. The present tendency to a redundant and overlapping phraseology in Plant Physiology, if unchecked, will ultimately lead to confusion similar to that existing in Taxonomy before the compilation of the Kew Index. The fact that a worker of the eminence, profundity, and breadth of Charles Darwin added only two or three terms to botanical terminology which could not be understood by reference to a standard English dictionary should make modern workers hesitate to encumber a developing science with more or less temporary pseudo-classical terms of doubtful utility or of none at all. Physieclexis and epitedeioperileipsis would have been poor substitutes for 'Natural Selection' and the 'Survival of the Fittest, ' and the use of such terms would probably have considerably retarded popular acceptance of the Darwinian theory. With the issue of the third and last volume of Professor Pfeffer's monumental work, a new point of departure has been gained by botanical physiology. Only those engaged in research can realize how much labour the preparation of these volumes, with their encyclopaedic compendium of modern literature, must have involved, and the completion of the work at so early a date in spite of a serious and almost fatal illness affords sufficient evidence of the devotion with which the author has pursued the stupendous task set before him to its conclusion. If the results of his labours have lost nothing in assuming their English dress, the task of the translator has been amply fulfilled. This book was released on 2018-09-24 with total page 424 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from An Elementary System of Physiology, Vol. 3 Considering that three years have elapsed since the publication of my first volume, I, have found occasion for less alteration and correction in the former part of the work than might perhaps have been expected. My readers will perceive that I have taken the Oppor tunity of introducing in various parts of the notes some of the necessary corrections and additions; the remain der I have placed in an appendix. I will not venture to presume, that these are all the deficiencies and in accuracies which the work may contain, but they are all that can be ascribed to inadvertency. AS to the errours of judgment, or the defects of information, i must leave them to be rectified and supplied by my successors, being satisfied with the reflection, that my attempt may have the effect of smoothing the path to one of the most interesting and ennobling pursuits that can possibly occupy the human mind. Book Principles of Plant Physiology Classic Reprint

Download or read book Principles of Plant Physiology Classic Reprint written by Oran Raber and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-21 with total page 472 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Principles of Plant Physiology During the past five years since the first edition of this book appeared, it has met with more favor in the eyes of teachers and students of the subject than the author (or the publishers) had anticipated even in the most sanguine moments. But during those five years much phytophysiological water has passed under the botanical bridge. Once again has come the task of deciding what matter shall be included and what shall not. There is also the question of maintaining the book within a reasonable size. N o self-respecting student can be expected to carry an elementary book of more than 500 pages. Most gospels are small; but revisions have a tendency to get bigger and (let us hope) better. An elementary text should be up to date and yet not con tain many disputable data. However, if one included in a text book only those facts to which every plant physiologist subscribed wholeheartedly all of the time, the author would finish with a mere pamphlet. A happy medium must be sought. Whether the teacher professor who reads this will think this golden mean has here been attained, will depend upon his personal predilections and the number of fields in which he is not a specialist. So in this, as in the previous edition, there has been an attempt to hold as much as possible to the essentials of a general, elementary course, bearing in mind that this elementary course may be pre paring the student for courses in horticulture, agronomy, or forestry; for more advanced courses in plant physiology; or for a more appreciative life in the nonprofessional world.
