This book was released on 2017-11-23 with total page 70 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Descendants of William Prichard N ow why did the author say Pritchard (ap Richard) when in the same breath he said where the p is capable of coalescing with the first letter of the name, the a is drop ped? Surely when we have ap Richard and drop the a wehave left simply p-richard. To insert the t is to depart from the origin of the name. In burke's landed gentry will be found the lineage of the Prichards of Pwllywrach, Glamorgan co., Wales. Here the name is correctly spelled. William Prich' ard may or may not have belonged to that family, the lin eage of which is here eo-pied as matters of interest to others of the same 'name who may not know their pedigree beyond their great-grand-father, and yet who may not find it difi cult to persuade themselves that they belong to this ancient family, even though they may have no proof. Believe it if you choose. Who is likely to question it, if you draw the book upon them? About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Crossing Textual Boundaries in International Children s Literature

Download or read book Crossing Textual Boundaries in International Children s Literature written by Lance Weldy and published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing. This book was released on 2011-01-18 with total page 545 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “As the first part of the title indicates, my interest in looking at intertextuality and transformation still maintains a prominent place throughout this book as well. If we believe that ‘no text is an island,’ then we will understand that the relationships between and within texts across the years become a fascinating place for academic inquiry. I included the word ‘boundaries’ into the title because we never get tired of voicing our opinions about texts which traverse relegated boundaries, such as genre or medium. Not only am I interested in discussing what these changes across boundaries mean socially, historically, and culturally, but also what they mean geographically, which accounts for the second part of my title. “I am very excited that this book will be placing even more emphasis on children’s literature in an international scene than my first book did, in the sense that I have added more scholars on an international level. I hesitate to list the nationalities of all of the contributors here because quite a few have themselves crossed international boundaries in different ways, by either studying abroad or finding permanent residency in foreign countries. Nevertheless, the writers have lived extensively in or identify as being from Australia, Canada, England, Finland, Germany, Greece, Iceland, Ireland, Israel, Norway, Spain, Sweden, Turkey, the United States of America, and Wales.” —Introduction

Book Charlotte Cushman

Download or read book Charlotte Cushman written by Arthur W. Bloom and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2023-04-25 with total page 226 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Charlotte Cushman, one of the great actors of 19th century American theatre, was a lesbian who kept her identity hidden by focusing her career on male characters (Romeo, Claude Melnotte, Wolsey), and also on strong and passionate women (Lady Macbeth, Bianca in Fazio, and Queen Katherine in Henry VIII). This biography is an authoritative record of Cushman's life and performances, showing how her complex gender identity illuminates and is illuminated by 19th century theatre critical views. Part One is a biography; Part Two is a performance history listing all of Cushman's known performances, often with a description of her role and critical commentary.

Book The Hunter Elite

    Book Details:
  • Author : Tara Kathleen Kelly
  • Publisher : University Press of Kansas
  • Release : 2018-03-15
  • ISBN : 0700625887
  • Pages : 348 pages

Download or read book The Hunter Elite written by Tara Kathleen Kelly and published by University Press of Kansas. This book was released on 2018-03-15 with total page 348 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: At the end of the nineteenth century, Theodore Roosevelt, T. S. Van Dyke, and other elite men began describing their big-game hunting as “manly sport with the rifle.” They also began writing about their experiences, publishing hundreds of narratives of hunting and adventure in the popular press (and creating a new literary genre in the process). But why did so many of these big-game hunters publish? What was writing actually doing for them, and what did it do for readers? In exploring these questions, The Hunter Elite reveals new connections among hunting narratives, publishing, and the American conservation movement. Beginning in the 1880s these prolific hunter-writers told readers that big-game hunting was a test of self-restraint and “manly virtues,” and that it was not about violence. They also opposed their sportsmanlike hunting to the slaughtering of game by British imperialists, even as they hunted across North America and throughout the British Empire. Their references to Americanism and manliness appealed to traditional values, but they used very modern publishing technologies to sell their stories, and by 1900 they were reaching hundreds of thousands of readers every month. When hunter-writers took up conservation as a cause, they used that reach to rally popular support for the national parks and for legislation that restricted hunting in the US, Canada, and Newfoundland. The Hunter Elite is the first book to explore both the international nature of American hunting during this period and the essential contributions of hunting narratives and the publishing industry to the North American conservation movement.
