Su crisis fue a la vez fundante y sistémica, al menos hasta la primera década del siglo XX, dejando un legado de grandes déficits que nunca se superarían del todo. En el balance histórico de la violencia institucional y de la producción de crueldad punitiva no podía soslayarse el caótico y agónico devenir del sistema penitenciario español que construyó el Estado liberal. Por eso había que observarlo en toda su extensión, esclareciendo zonas penumbrosas que habían sido poco exploradas. Este libro cubre en gran medida un vacío historiográfico muy llamativo, peliaguda tarea que ya se estaba demorando demasiado. Luís Gargallo aborda con buen método tres grandes aspectos de un período largo, el de la Restauración, en el que el sistema penitenciario fue adquiriendo solidez y credibilidad institucional hasta alcanzar su máximo desarrollo en los primeros años de la Segunda República, poco antes de que la guerra del 36 lo atenazara hasta llevarlo al colapso: 1) el cambiante marco normativo y gubernativo de las prisiones españolas, siempre impotente y hasta farragoso, pero inteligible y a la postre constituyente del poder punitivo que realmente se llevó a la práctica; 2) el peso de la función institucional del encierro carcelario en las actitudes sociales y políticas, en definitiva, en la cultura punitiva que se fue creando y que el propio sistema ayudó a crear en un contexto que sitúa también a España en “el proceso civilizatorio penal”; y 3) la realidad estadística del encierro penitenciario, números fríos de una historia social del castigo que gracias a la investigación de Luís Gargallo Vaamonde hoy podemos conocer y valorar con más amplitud y seriedad.

Elites have, instead, begun with a new «military alchemy», treating the whole Planet as weapon of mass destruction. Hence, the «Planetary Movement for Mother Earth».

Far from seeking an extemporaneous autonomy, Social History of Punitive Institutions wants to try to find its own feasibility based on intersections and good mixings. Those objectives were considered by the Study Group about History of Prison and Punitive Institutions (Grupo de Estudio sobre la Historia de la Prisión y las Instituciones Punitivas, GEHPIP) –an interuniversity team and with central office at Universidad de Castilla-La Mancha (UCLM)– when organising what it decided to name in an homonymous way 1st International Congress on History of Prison and Punitive Institutions (I Congreso Internacional sobre Historia de la Prisión y las Instituciones Punitivas), held in Ciudad Real (Spain) from 10 to 12 April 2013. Book excerpt: The Archaeology of the Spanish Civil War offers the first comprehensive account of the Spanish Civil War from an archaeological perspective, providing an alternative narrative on one of the most important conflicts of the twentieth century, widely seen as a prelude to the Second World War. Between 1936 and 1939, totalitarianism and democracy, fascism and revolution clashed in Spain, while the latest military technologies were being tested, including strategic bombing and combined arms warfare, and violence against civilians became widespread. Archaeology, however, complicates the picture as it brings forgotten actors into play: obsolete weapons, vernacular architecture, ancient structures (from Iron Age hillforts to sheepfolds), peasant traditions, and makeshift arms. By looking at these things, another story of the war unfolds, one that pays more attention to intimate experiences and anonymous individuals. Archaeology also helps to clarify battles, which were often chaotic and only partially documented, and to understand better the patterns of political violence, whose effects were literally buried for over 70 years. The narrative starts with the coup against the Second Spanish Republic on 18 July 1936, follows the massacres and battles that marked the path of the war, and ends in the early 1950s, when the last forced labor camps were closed and the anti-Francoist guerrillas suppressed. The book draws on 20 years of research to bring together perspectives from battlefield archaeology, archaeologies of internment, and forensics. It will be of interest to anybody interested in historical and contemporary archaeology, human rights violations, modern military history, and negative heritage.
