Book Desarrollo sostenible para ingenieros

Download or read book Desarrollo sostenible para ingenieros written by Karel Mulder and published by Univ. Politèc. de Catalunya. This book was released on 2010-09 with total page 242 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.

Book Gender Sensitive Approaches for the Extractive Industry in Peru

Download or read book Gender Sensitive Approaches for the Extractive Industry in Peru written by Bernie Ward and published by World Bank Publications. This book was released on 2010-11-11 with total page 216 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Large amounts of development assistance in the form of infrastructure and social programs are annually made available to communities across Peru due the presence of extractive industry companies. These investments however do not always achieve the social development impact anticipated. As one company pointed out: our company has invested millions of dollars in social programs in our neighboring communities, however the indicators for child malnutrition and maternal health have seen no noticeable improvement . Communities base their support or rejection for extractive industry operations by weighing up the benefits against the risks; where the risk-benefit balance sheet does not look positive, conflict is likely. Companies, and the governments who benefit from their tax revenues, therefore work hard to reduce risks and increase benefits for communities: but this report confirms an overlooked aspect of the development outcomes: men are capturing more of the benefits and these are not necessarily reaching the wider family; whereas it is the women and children who experience more of the risks that arise from the presence of extractive industry projects. The impact on women could be significantly improved by taking simple steps with little additional effort or cost disaggregating data by sex, strengthening consultations with women, investigating issues of risk to women, improving women s access to benefits. Additionally this report challenges the development industry (those non-governmental organizations, community-based organizations, universities, research centers, think tanks, funders, foundations and training organizations for whom the development of theories and practices to alleviate poverty is a primary objective.) to work more closely with local government and companies, sharing its knowledge on thematic issues such as gender (and other areas such as Rights-Based Approaches or Community-Driven Development) and on programs (such as maternal health, bi-lingual education, or productive chain development) to achieve what the NGOs, civil society and local government have within their mandates to deliver, and what the EI sector seeks.

Download or read book Manual para el desarrollo de ferrocarriles urbanos written by Daniel Pulido and published by World Bank Publications. This book was released on 2020-11-09 with total page 814 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.

Book Territorial Heritage and Development

Download or read book Territorial Heritage and Development written by José Maria Feria and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2012-03-05 with total page 242 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book presents a new approach to heritage, linking it to territory and sustainable development. This new approach entails a broader, integrated view of heritage values on the one hand, and on the other a shift in emphasis from their protection to their valorisation. In short, it provides a view of the joint workings of natural and cultural resources, and, as a consequence, moving away from a protection point of view in favour of a perspective on their suitable sustainable valorisation. In the viewpoint taken here, sustainability is understood as the balance and long-term preservation and enhancement of such natural and cultural resources and processes in a given territory. Territorial Heritage and Development includes contributions from different disciplines (geography, architecture, planning, sociology, environmental studies and archaeology) and case studies drawn from three continents, broaching both analytical and conceptual developments, and a range of initiatives for engaging in territorial heritage as an instrument of sustainable development. The book takes a pioneering and relevant approach to the breadth and complexity of the issue which can be valuable to academics and policy-makers in Geography, Architecture, Planning and Sociology.

Book Tree Plantation Extractivism in Chile

Download or read book Tree Plantation Extractivism in Chile written by Alejandro Mora-Motta and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2024-03-29 with total page 229 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book examines how extractivism transforms territories and affects the well-being of rural people, drawing on in-depth fieldwork conducted on tree plantations in Chile. The book argues that pine and eucalyptus monoculture plantations in southern Chile are a form of extractivism representing a mode of nature appropriation that captures large amounts of natural resources to produce wooden-based raw materials with little processing and an export-oriented focus. The book discusses the nexus of extractivism, territorial transformations, well-being, and emerging resistances using a participatory action research methodological approach in the Region of Los Ríos, southern Chile. The findings show how the configuration of an extractivist logging enclave generated a substantial and irrevocable reordering of human-nature relations, resulting in the territorial and ontological occupation of rural places that disrupted the fundamental human needs of peasants and indigenous people. The book maintains that Chile's green growth development approach does not challenge the consolidated tree plantation enclave controlled by large multinationals. Instead, green growth legitimises the extractivist logic. The book draws parallels with other countries and regions to contribute to wider debates surrounding these topics. This book will be of great interest to students and scholars of the extractive industries, development studies, political ecology, and natural resource governance.
