Book An Ecological Approach to Perceptual Learning and Development

Download or read book An Ecological Approach to Perceptual Learning and Development written by Eleanor J. Gibson and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2003-05-15 with total page 258 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The essential nature of learning is primarily thought of as a verbal process or function, but this notion conveys that pre-linguistic infants do not learn. Far from being "blank slates" that passively absorb environmental stimuli, infants are active learners who perceptually engage their environments and extract information from them before language is available. The ecological approach to perceiving-defined as "a theory about perceiving by active creatures who look and listen and move around"-was spearheaded by Eleanor and James Gibson in the 1950s and culminated in James Gibson's last book in 1979. Until now, no comprehensive theoretical statement of ecological development has been published since Eleanor Gibson's Principles of Perceptual Learning and Development (1969). In An Ecological Approach to Perceptual Learning and Development, distinguished experimental psychologists Eleanor J. Gibson and Anne D. Pick provide a unique theoretical framework for the ecological approach to understanding perceptual learning and development. Perception, in accordance with James Gibson's views, entails a reciprocal relationship between a person and his or her environment: The environment provides resources and opportunities for the person, and the person gets information from and acts on the environment. The concept of affordance is central to this idea; the person acts on what the environment affords, as it is appropriate. This extraordinary volume covers the development of perception in detail from birth through toddlerhood, beginning with the development of communication, going on to perceiving and acting on objects, and then to locomotion. It is more than a presentation of facts about perception as it develops. It outlines the ecological approach and shows how it underlies "higher" cognitive processes, such as concept formation, as well as discovery of the basic affordances of the environment. This impressive work should serve as the capstone for Eleanor J. Gibson's distinguished career as a developmental and experimental psychologist.

Book Cognitive Neuroscience of Attention

Download or read book Cognitive Neuroscience of Attention written by Michael I. Posner and published by Guilford Press. This book was released on 2004-07-16 with total page 466 pages. Outstanding investigators have written brief yet substantive chapters in which they not only summarize key findings but also illuminate their goals and the directions their research is taking. Coverage includes different cognitive models of attention; knowledge emerging from functional imaging and genetic studies; and neurophysiological, developmental, and neuropsychological approaches. Emerging knowledge is presented on processes that impair or alter attention, and clinical implications are discussed. Linking many levels of analysis, and featuring over 100 illustrations, the book moves us closer to a coherent view of the attentional system and the key role it plays in everyday life.

Book Tietz Clinical Guide to Laboratory Tests E Book

Download or read book Tietz Clinical Guide to Laboratory Tests E Book written by Alan H. B. Wu and published by Elsevier Health Sciences. This book was released on 2006-06-08 with total page 1856 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This new edition of Norbert Tietz's classic handbook presents information on common tests as well as rare and highly specialized tests and procedures - including a summary of the utility and merit of each test. Biological variables that may affect test results are discussed, and a focus is placed on reference ranges, diagnostic information, clinical interpretation of laboratory data, interferences, and specimen types. New and updated content has been added in all areas, with over 100 new tests added. Tests are divided into 8 main sections and arranged alphabetically. Each test includes necessary information such as test name (or disorder) and method, specimens and special requirements, reference ranges, chemical interferences and in vivo effects, kinetic values, diagnostic information, factors influencing drug disposition, and clinical comments and remarks. The most current and relevant tests are included; outdated tests have been eliminated. Test index (with extensive cross references) and disease index provide the reader with an easy way to find necessary information Four new sections in key areas (Preanalytical, Flow Cytometry, Pharmacogenomics, and Allergy) make this edition current and useful. New editor Alan Wu, who specializes in Clinical Chemistry and Toxicology, brings a wealth of experience and expertise to this edition. The Molecular Diagnostics section has been greatly expanded due to the increased prevalence of new molecular techniques being used in laboratories. References are now found after each test, rather than at the end of each section, for easier access.
