Book excerpt: Fresh Water from the Sea is a collection of papers that discusses the advancement in the technologies and methodologies utilized in the process of desalting seawater. The emphasis of the book is not only on desalting but also on processing the seawater into potable water. The coverage of the text includes the advancement of desalting process in various countries, such as Japan, Israel, and Italy. The text also covers the aspects of the application of ion exchange to the conversion of saline water into fresh water and the evolution of the distillation process for seawater conversion. The text will be of great use to researchers and practitioners in disciplines that directly deal with securing a potable water source.

Book Fundamentals of Salt Water Desalination

Download or read book Fundamentals of Salt Water Desalination written by Hisham T. El-Dessouky and published by Elsevier Science Limited. This book was released on 2002 with total page 670 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Industrial desalination of sea and brackish water is becoming an essential part in providing sustainable sources of fresh water for a larger number of communities around the world. Desalination is a main source of fresh water in the Gulf countries, a number of the Caribbean and Mediterranean Islands, and several municipalities in a large number of countries. As the industry expands there is a pressing need to have a clear and well-written textbook that focuses on desalination fundamentals and other industrial aspects. This book focuses on the processes widely used in industry, which include multistage flash desalination and reverse osmosis. Also, other desalination processes with attractive features and high potential are featured. It includes a large number of solved examples, which are explained in simple and careful matter that allow the reader to follow and understand the development. The data used in the development of the examples and case studies are extracted from existing desalination plants. This title also includes comparisons of model predictions against results reported in literature as well as available experimental and industrial data. Several industries include similar unit operation processes, i.e., evaporators, condensers, flashing units, membrane separation, and chemical treatment. Examples of such industries include wastewater treatment, food, petroleum, petrochemical, power generation, and pulp and paper. Process fundamentals and design procedures of such unit processes follow the same procedures given in this textbook.

Book A Novel Approach to Seawater Desalination Using Dual staged Nanofiltration

Download or read book A Novel Approach to Seawater Desalination Using Dual staged Nanofiltration written by and published by American Water Works Association. This book was released on 2006 with total page 164 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An alternative to desalting seawater by the traditional seawater RO (SWRO) method is a novel dual-staged nanofiltration (NF2) process developed by the Long Beach Water Department (LBWD). With this as a basis, this report investigated The capability of dual-staged nanofiltration for seawater desalination to reduce operational costs was assessed through a research plan divided into four phases: theoretical basis of the system (governing equations, membrane suitability, etc.); operational optimization approaches (pilot tests and use of a predictive model); preliminary strategies for blending desalinated water with existing finished water; and verification of inherent redundancy of the process with viral challenge tests.
