Book Horace s Epistles Wieland and the Reader

Download or read book Horace s Epistles Wieland and the Reader written by Jane Veronica Curran and published by MHRA. This book was released on 1995 with total page 188 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Wieland's translations of Horace's Epistles, neglected until recently, demonstrate his skill in overcoming the bipolar relationship implied in the very idea of translation. Thanks to a strong, cosmopolitan fellow-feeling with the ancient poet, Wieland made judicious editorial choices in the areas of diction, prosody, layout, typography and scholarly apparatus. This most flexible of translators avoided collapsing the distinctions between his own world and Horace's, and achieved true communication with Horace, while simultaneously drawing the contemporary German reader into the dialogue. Translation techniques employed by Wieland's contemporaries are also discussed here, as well as Horace's reception during the period, and the tensions between originality and imitation, and between ancient hexameter and modern metres.

Book Problems of Reason Kant in Context

Download or read book Problems of Reason Kant in Context written by Antonino Falduto and published by Walter de Gruyter GmbH & Co KG. This book was released on 2024-09-03 with total page 410 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume aims to make a significant contribution to the debate surrounding the renaissance of Kant studies in the last few decades, with a particular emphasis upon some ‘problems of reason’. Like no other, Kant covered the entire breadth of the modern debate concerning the concept of reason and its forms. Accordingly, despite the range of topics this volume inevitably deals with, Immanuel Kant remains the common point of reference for all contributions. The volume is divided into two sections. The first section is dedicated to Kant’s philosophy in particular and its relationship with the philosophies of Kant’s predecessors. From the perspective of the history of philosophy, interpretations of the significance of different philosophical traditions concerning Kant’s thought will be given, and of the relationship of Kant’s thought to the problems of reason with which Kant and his predecessors dealt. The second section is dedicated to the legacy of Kant’s philosophy. The relevance of the concept of rationality for the genesis and systematics of post-Kantian ideas of rationality will be discussed, and the potential of Kant’s critical philosophy – for contemporary thought as well – will be examined.

Book A Translation and Interpretation of Horace s Sermones Book I

Download or read book A Translation and Interpretation of Horace s Sermones Book I written by Andy Law and published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing. This book was released on 2021-03-15 with total page 491 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Horace’s book of Sermones (also called Satires) was his first published work. Rather than a collection of satirical sideswipes, as the genre might have dictated, the book is a wiry, tight, muscular, interlaced hexameter artwork of enormous originality and as far removed from the legacy of satirical writing he inherited as one can imagine. It is the work of a 29-year-old grappling with issues of personal and poetic identity during one of the most important and pivotal times in European history. Geographically, socially and genetically an outsider, Horace earned himself a seat at Rome’s top creative table, close to the heart of the political engine that was to change Rome forever. His book details a transformational journey from ‘nobody’ to ‘somebody’, and is a simultaneous invention of poet and reinvention of poetic genre. Horace’s Sermones have floated in and out of fashion ever since they first appeared, regularly eclipsed by his Odes. Today, rehabilitated, they find space in the higher levels of the school curriculum. This book provides unique insights and will be of interest to all classicists, as well as students studying core influences on European literature.

Book What May Words Say

Download or read book What May Words Say written by Inge Leimberg and published by Fairleigh Dickinson. This book was released on 2011-02-24 with total page 294 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 'What may words say_?' A Reading of The Merchant of Venice contains, in a form resembling a running commentary, a comprehensive and in many respects unconventional interpretation of The Merchant of Venice. The play's development of ideas is unfolded in a literary analysis that focuses on the poet's words in their philological, historical, and philosophical contexts. What the words say is that the play is dominated by the three Delphic maxims, Know thyself, Nothing too much, and Give surety and harm is at hand. Within the intellectual and ethical compass of these tenets the two-stranded action of the play is developed, and the question why Shakespeare added the story of the caskets to the story of the bond is answered by the words law and choice, which are as closely connected semantically as the two stories are interrelated in the dramatic structure. The self-knowledge achieved in the musical cadence of the play is everyone's seeing God's image in the other person, and the law finally chosen is forgiveness.
