Book The Catholic Church and the Northern Ireland Troubles 1968 1998

Download or read book The Catholic Church and the Northern Ireland Troubles 1968 1998 written by Margaret M. Scull and published by Oxford University Press, USA. This book was released on 2019 with total page 249 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Until surprisingly recently the history of the Irish Catholic Church during the Northern Irish Troubles was written by Irish priests and bishops and was commemorative, rather than analytical. This study uses the Troubles as a case study to evaluate the role of the Catholic Church in mediating conflict. During the Troubles, these priests and bishops often worked behind the scenes, acting as go-betweens for the British government and republican paramilitaries, to bring about a peaceful solution. However, this study also looks more broadly at the actions of the American, Irish and English Catholic Churches, as well as that of the Vatican, to uncover the full impact of the Church on the conflict. This critical analysis of previously neglected state, Irish, and English Catholic Church archival material changes our perspective on the role of a religious institution in a modern conflict.

Book Clergy of Derry and Raphoe

Download or read book Clergy of Derry and Raphoe written by Ulster Historical Foundation and published by . This book was released on 1999 with total page 866 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The United Dioceses of Derry and Raphoe are almost coterminous with the modern counties of Derry and Donegal; they were united in 1834 and since then have been administered by one Bishop. This volume is the third in the series of modern revisions of Canon J.B. Leslie's pioneering work on clergy succession lists for the dioceses of the Church of Ireland. Canon Leslie's list for Derry was publised in 1937 and for Raphoe in 1940; the present book brings the lists as far as 1999 and incorporates much information which has come to light since the earlier lists were published. Also included are short parish histories with photographs of the churches. Facsimle reproductions of Canon Leslie's earlier volumes are included thus providing the reader with a book of reference on the clergy of the United Dioceses reaching back to earlier times. Generations to come will be indebted to Canons Frederick W. Fawcett and David W.T. Crooks, both active clergymen in the Diocese for providing an indispensable book of reference.

Book Researching Scots Irish Ancestors

Download or read book Researching Scots Irish Ancestors written by William J. Roulston and published by Ulster Historical Foundation. This book was released on 2005 with total page 284 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: One of the greatest frustrations for generations of genealogical researchers has been that reliable guidance on sources for perhaps the most critical period in the establishment of their family's links with Ulster, the period up to 1800, has proved to be so elusive. Not any more. This book can claim to be the first comprehensive guide for family historians searching for ancestors in seventeenth- and eighteenth-century Ulster. Whether their ancestors are of English, Scottish, or Gaelic Irish origin, it will be of enormous value to anyone wishing to conduct research in Ulster prior to 1800. A comprehensive range of sources from the period 1600-1800 are identified and explained in very clear terms. Information on the whereabouts of these records and how they may be accessed is also provided. Equally important, there is guidance on how effectively they might be used. The appendices to the book include a full listing of pre-1800 church records for Ulster; a detailed description of nearly 250 collections of seventeenth- and eighteenth-century estate papers; and a summary breakdown of the sources available from this period for each parish in Ulster.
