Book The Atlantic Salmon in the History of North America

Download or read book The Atlantic Salmon in the History of North America written by R. W. Dunfield and published by Fisheries and Oceans, Scientific Information and Publications Branch. This book was released on 1985 with total page 208 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar) has occupied a salient position in the history of eastern North America for at least the past 1000 years. Initially the species occupied a prominant niche in the prolific web of life that existed throughout its former occurrence area; millions of pounds of salmon were produced annually from the freshwater streams between New York and Ungava - a resource that was a principal food source for the Amerindian cultures which shared its range. In a chronological and cumulative way, the salmon became an increasingly important factor in both the domestic and commercial life of the developing colonies; it provided a recreational outlet for the sportsman, and evolved as a principal object of intellectual and scientific investigation. The documented specifics of the salmon's history, however, are largely comprised of repetitive instances of overexploitation, careless destruction of stocks and their environment, and ineffectual conservation actions. Despite the species' former importance, its more recent history is one of declining presence, and its destiny appears to be extinction. By documenting this story of discovery, exploitation, and decline, the urgent need for the employment of sound resource management practices to preserve the salmon is emphasized. Appendix A: Historical methods of packing salmon.

Book Slavery and the British Country House

Download or read book Slavery and the British Country House written by Madge Dresser and published by Historic England Publishing. This book was released on 2013 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The British country house has long been regarded as the jewel in the nation's heritage crown. But the country house is also an expression of wealth and power, and as scholars reconsider the nation's colonial past, new questions are being posed about these great houses and their links to Atlantic slavery. This book, authored by a range of academics and heritage professionals, grew out of a 2009 conference on 'Slavery and the British Country house: mapping the current research' organised by English Heritage in partnership with the University of the West of England, the National Trust and the Economic History Society. It asks what links might be established between the wealth derived from slavery and the British country house and what implications such links should have for the way such properties are represented to the public today.Lavishly illustrated and based on the latest scholarship, this wide-ranging and innovative volume provides in-depth examinations of individual houses, regional studies and critical reconsiderations of existing heritage sites, including two studies specially commissioned by English Heritage and one sponsored by the National Trust.

Book Crime in the United States 2013

Download or read book Crime in the United States 2013 written by Shana Hertz Hattis and published by Bernan Press. This book was released on 2013-04-18 with total page 628 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Crime in the United States contains findings from the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) of the offenses, known to law enforcement, released annually from its Uniform Crime Reporting Program. Because the FBI no longer prints these findings, Bernan Press continues to provide this practical information in convenient book form. In this intricately detailed source, legal and law enforcement professionals, researchers, and those who are just curious will find violent and property crime statistics for the nation as a whole—and for regions, states, counties, cities, towns, and even college and university campuses. Crime in the United States includes statistics for: • violent and property crimes • hate crimes • crime trends • victims, by type • crimes cleared (those closed by arrest or other means) • persons arrested (age, sex, and race) • juvenile offenders • law enforcement personnel (including the number of sworn officers killed or assaulted) • characteristics of homicides (including age, sex, and race of victims and offenders; victim-offender relationships; weapons used; and circumstances surrounding homicides) In addition to data, Crime in the United States also includes text and pertinent figures that explain the data in greater detail and supplies a visual perspective of these major offenses. Violent crimes include: • murder and non-negligent manslaughter • forcible rape • robbery • aggravated assault Property crimes include: • burglary • larceny-theft • motor vehicle theft • arson Hate crimes include any crime motivated by bias against: • race • religion • sexual orientation • ethnicity/national origin • and/or disability Data include the following: offense type, location, bias motivation, victim type, number of individual victims, number of offenders, and the race of the offenders. Interesting facts found in Crime in the United States include: The rate of violent crime decreased 21.9 percent between 2002 and 2011. Robberies declined the most of any offense, falling 22.2 percent. The FBI estimated that 12,408,899 arrests were made in 2011. Of these arrests, 4.3 percent were for violent crimes. Law enforcement agencies reported 6,222 hate crime incidents involving 7,254 offenses in 2011. In 2011, slightly more hate crimes were committed on the basis of sexual orientation (1,293) than on a religion basis (1,233). Men accounted for 88.2 percent of all full-time sworn law enforcement officers in 2011. In 2011, the estimated number of forcible rapes (83,425)—the lowest figure in 22 years—decreased 2.5 percent from the 2010 estimate. The average dollar value of property taken during burglaries was $2,185; during robberies, $1,153; and during larceny thefts, $988.

Book Artisans in the North Carolina Backcountry

Download or read book Artisans in the North Carolina Backcountry written by Johanna Miller Lewis and published by University Press of Kentucky. This book was released on 2014-07-15 with total page 224 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During the quarter of a century before the thirteen colonies became a nation, the northwest quadrant of North Carolina had just begun to attract permanent settlers. This seemingly primitive area may not appear to be a likely source for attractive pottery and ornate silverware and furniture, much less for an audience to appreciate these refinements. Yet such crafts were not confined to urban centers, and artisans, like other colonists, were striving to create better lives for themselves as well as to practice their trades. As Johanna Miller Lewis shows in this pivotal study of colonial history and material culture, the growing population of Rowan County required not only blacksmiths, saddlers, and tanners but also a great variety of skilled craftsmen to help raise the standard of living. Rowan County's rapid expansion was in part the result of the planned settlements of the Moravian Church. Because the Moravians maintained careful records, historians have previously credited church artisans with greater skill and more economic awareness than non-church craftsmen. Through meticulous attention to court and private records, deeds, wills, and other sources, Lewis reveals the Moravian failure to keep up with the pace of development occurring elsewhere in the county. Challenging the traditional belief that southern backcountry life was primitive, Lewis shows that many artisans held public office and wielded power in the public sphere. She also examines women weavers and spinsters as an integral part of the population. All artisans -- Moravian and non-Moravian, male and female -- helped the local market economy expand to include coastal and trans-Atlantic trade. Lewis's book contributes meaningfully to the debate over self-sufficiency and capitalism in rural America.
