These products have become highly popular with banks and financial institutions as they allow them to hedge their risks and manage their financial resources more efficiently. Although various structured products have enabled the transfer of risks and enhanced the liquidity of instruments, the recent turmoil in the US sub-prime mortgage market and related developments connected with complex derivatives have also brought to the fore the risks posed by these instruments. In India, financial products such as mortgage-backed securities and asset-backed securities are in existence. Besides the securitized products, the Indian forex and rupee derivative markets have also developed significantly over the years. In its Annual Policy Statement for the year 2008-2009, the Reserve Bank of India announced the introduction of currency futures in the eligible exchanges. This book explains the basics of financial derivatives and their growth and role in the Indian financial system.

Book excerpt: The study is conducted to establish the framework for comparting the relation in performance of the derivatives of BSE and NSE in India and to analyse the relationship of derivatives with cash market and the market volatility. The exchange traded equity derivatives were considered for the study. It was found that the performance of derivatives in NSE is lot higher than BSE and the NSE is on par with the global exchanges compared to BSE in terms of in terms of the number of contracts traded for Stock Index Options and Futures and also Stock Futures. Hence derivatives market need to strengthen further with the number of contracts traded and turnover in all the derivative instruments with more strong regulations and robust framework protecting the interest of the investors. This study enables Derivative Industry to progress towards its goals and objectives in a more efficient way.

The paper also analyses the perception of investor about objectives of investment, investment pattern, risk, derivatives awareness level, future of derivatives market in India. Data has been collected for a period of 18 years from January 1, 1996 to February 5, 2014. Data has been collected for various indexes like CNX S&P Nifty index daily closing prices (from January 1, 1996 to February 5, 2014), Nifty Junior Index (from January 1, 1996 to February 5, 2014), Index Futures near month contracts daily closing prices from (June 12, 2000 to February 5, 2014) and S&P 500 Index (from January 1, 1996 to February 5, 2014).The questionnaire was distributed to 1000 respondents but 522 filled questionnaires were received and have been analyzed in this study. The questionnaire was subjected to reliability and expert validity.The final AR (1)-GARCH (1,1) model show that overall volatility has reduced in the spot market after the introduction of derivatives. In the model all variables are highly significant. Awareness about financial markets, experience in derivatives trading, workplace activity and return expectation are significantly associated with derivative awareness level (DAL) of respondents at 5 percent level of significance. The results of Structural Equation Modelling reveals perception of investors about future of derivatives market in India include having an investor grievance redressal mechanism which is approachable under trading hours, steps to be taken by regulators to increase investments, conducting investor training and awareness programmes, global integration will happen, derivatives market will affect growth of the economy and consolidation of exchanges is required.
