The work is a major contribution to a new scholarly genre, a form of anthropological theory-building in memoir form. Its varied gestures include: paeans to past mentors; rich recollections of childhood; ethnographic analyses of various cultural institutions, especially Howard University; re-conceptualizations of Caribbean/African significances vis-a-vis African Americans in the United States, and more. Such a wide-ranging effort is precisely what recommends this bookand what makes it like few other books in Anthropology or Africana Studies. Matory argues that several ironies highlight class-based (seemingly post-racial) social formations while also reinforcing racialization and challenging such racial logics from within. He shows how educational institutions are spaces for the paradoxical production of both elitist/post-ethnic class identities and for the fostering of would-be ethnic particularity and differenceall at the same time. Providing a nuanced window into variously situated Black groups in the United States (including the seemingly exotic little races or tri-racial isolates such as Louisiana Creoles and the oft-discussed Gullah/Geechee), this book argues that the longstanding scholarly assumption about social isolation as a causal mechanism for the cultural legitimacy of such groups is absolutely wrong. Instead, Matory shows that all of these groups are quite decidedly produced in and through contact with their ostensible others. Ethnic purities and particularities are the byproducts of anxieties and efforts birthed from the contact that such purities are meant to deny. This is one of the book s most powerful interventions, and Matory provides compelling arguments for how so many get this wrong. Ultimately "Stigma and Culture" explains not just the continuing significance of race and ethnicity as seen in various American contexts, but also makes the case for how new and old ethnic differences are enabled and produced in the contemporary moment."

Book excerpt: Sustainability of the environment contains both wishful thinking and ignorance – ignorance of the reality that natural systems are complex and unfathomable by scientists, and that repetition of their outputs depend on repetition of initial and all subsequent conditions. Scientific insights provide knowledge, but it is partial in most cases, and when applied is often subject to conflicting objectives, which in turn produce conditions that affect outcomes ‑ thus our best efforts to predict natural outcomes are usually flawed. We further display our ignorance in seeking social sustainability while we behave inequitably towards groups other than ‘us’ and invoke spurious reasoning to justify further research. The effect of ignorant self-interest is played out daily in our largest intervention in the natural environment – agriculture, which is why agriculture provides perhaps the best model for consideration of the ideal of sustainability.

The book also notes the responsible actions of the world’s major food producers, China and India, both of which are criticized for abandoning unsuitable agendas of development agencies.

Book excerpt: Governance of organizations is less studied than management, yet is a key determinant of strategic vision and direction, oversight and values. An organization’s Board selects, appoints and monitors Management with which it must maintain a productive interaction with both parties understanding their different roles. International research institutions funded by variable contributions from wealthy national governments and philanthropic bodies have specific governance requirements. Neither governmental nor UN-style bodies offer prescriptions for the expertise and complexity of such legally constituted specialist organizations. In the case of such organizations as the International Livestock Research Institute within the CGIAR association, governance has been shared across different persons, bodies and forces. The sharing of such critical responsibilities worked productively when trust was high and funding was approximately aligned to the influence of the sharing parties, but otherwise it risked anomalies of imbalance between authority and responsibilities that prejudiced impact. The book traces the governance systems of ILRI across five decades of international livestock research as a case study of historical interest that can inform future structures in the international research arena.

The book examines the multiple identities that migrants adopted and the huge range and complexity of homecomers’ motives and experiences.
