Resulta evidente que el entorno informático evoluciona mucho más rápido que el jurídico, desborda el ámbito territorial estatal y alcanza una neta vocación internacional y multidisciplinar. Por estos motivos, las relaciones que median entre el Derecho y la Informática han sido estudiadas teniendo presentes, además de las normas nacionales, la regulación europea e internacional al uso; asimismo, se han abordado cuestiones propias del derecho público, del derecho privado o del ámbito de la ética jurídica.
