Download or read book 6 511 Miles from Derbent written by Tatyana Clark and published by Archway Publishing. This book was released on 2018-02-06 with total page 152 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The exact distance between Derbent, Russia, and Logan, Utah, is 6,511 miles. That may be hard for a child to comprehend, but Tanya would always joke with her parents that if they made her mad, she was going to pick up and move to the United States of America. No one paid attention to her. In fact, as Tanya grew older, everyone discouraged her from setting her sights on the U.S.A.and they even claimed that it was not possible. But the girl from a remote town by the Caspian Sea in the Caucus Mountains region of the Russian Federation would overcome everyones doubts and earn a full athletic scholarship to Utah State University. In this memoir, she tells the dramatic story of how big ambitions led her from being a girl with limited opportunities in the U.S.S.R. and post-communist Russia to a successful woman with a loving family in the United States. If youre interested in the social history of the Soviet Union and Russia, enjoy reading memoirs of immigrants, or simply love inspirational stories, then you need to read 6,511 Miles from Derbent. I would especially like to thank my friend, Jon P, for his help in Proof-Reading my story. Vasiliy Kuznetsov of Moscow, Russia for advising and interviewing me through the process. My husband and my children for their support and love.

Book Vital Caspian Graphics

Download or read book Vital Caspian Graphics written by and published by UNEP/Earthprint. This book was released on 2006 with total page 72 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This publication examines very complex, yet fascinating issues affecting the environment of the Caspian Sea and the surrounding areas. We often associate the Caspian Sea with caviar that is legally or illegally finding its way to our tables, but overlook the footprints left by a number of industries installed on shores of the Caspian that are serving the world wealthiest market demands. The struggle for access to the vast resources of this unique and fragile ecosystem and the development of new transportation routes between Europe and Asia continue to shape the geopolitical and security conditions in and around the world's largest body of inland water. These and other developments pose complex challenges in the efforts of countries to improve the damaged ecosystems that the local communities are depending on.

The Caucasus and Central Asia (http://eurodialogue. org/?les/fckeditor_?les/Caspian-s- map2. png) vii viii Introduction For more than 250 years the Caspian Sea was shared by two states: Russia (the Soviet Union) and Persia (Iran). After the disintegration of the USSR in 1992, the new independent states of Azerbaijan, Turkmenistan and Kazakhstan have radically changed the political and economic situation in the region. In addition to Russia and Iran, who had determined the situation on the Caspian for a long period, Azerbaijan, Turkmenistan and Kazakhstan are now interested parties, beginning a new stage in the historical development of the Caspian region. This increase in the number of the Caspian legal entities from two to ?ve has given rise to a whole tangle of geopolitical, economic, international legal, ethnic and environmental problems, each of which demands its own approach and settlement mechanism.

Download or read book Representing Russia s Orient written by Adalyat Issiyeva and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2020-11-11 with total page 433 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Throughout history, Russia's geo-political and cultural position between the East and West has shaped its national identity. Representing Russia's Orient tells the story of how Russia's imperial expansion and encounters with its Asian neighbors influenced the formation and development of Russian musical identity in the long nineteenth century. While Russia's ethnic minorities, or inorodtsy, were located at the geographical and cultural periphery, they loomed large in composers' perception and musical imagination and became central to the definition of Russianness itself. Drawing from a long-forgotten archive of Russian musical examples, visual art, and ethnographies, author Adalyat Issiyeva offers an in-depth study of Russian art music's engagement with oriental subjects. Within a complex matrix of politics, competing ideological currents, and social and cultural transformations, some Russian composers and writers developed multidimensional representations of oriental "others" and sometimes even embraced elements of Asian musical identity. In three detailed case studies--on the leader of the Mighty Five, Milii Balakirev, Decembrist sympathizer Alexander Aliab'ev, and the composers affiliated with the Music-Ethnography Committee--Issiyeva traces how and why these composers adopted "foreign" musical elements. In this way, she provides a fresh look at how Russians absorbed and transformed elements of Asian history and culture in forging a national identity for themselves.

Book Russian Embassies to the Georgian Kings 1589 1605

Download or read book Russian Embassies to the Georgian Kings 1589 1605 written by W.E.D. Allen and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2017-07-05 with total page 281 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: By the early 16th century the loosely knit kingdom of Georgia had disintegrated from the strong monarchy of the middle ages to a number of small states and principalities. This internal disunity made the Georgians easy victims of the power politics of the neighbouring Ottoman and Safavid empires and by the end of the century the southward drive of the Russians intensified the struggle for military and diplomatic control over the whole of the Caucasian isthmus. As a result of this struggle 17 embassies were exchanged between the Russian tsars and the Georgian kings ruling in Kakheti during the years 1564-1605. Mr Allen and Mr Mango (who undertook the translation) have selected the documents relating to the embassies of 1589-90 and 1604-05. Although the writers seem to be frequently preoccupied with questions of protocol, their observations give a clear picture of both current Russian administrative and diplomatic practice and of the life and customs of the peoples of the Caucasus and Georgia. The texts are further enlivened by dramas such as the murder of the Kakhian king Alexander II and the secret negotiations for the marriages of the son and daughter of the Tsar Boris Godunov. The documents are of considerable geographical interest as they provide the earliest extant accounts of the crossing of the main chain of the Caucasus from north to south. Mr Allen provides both a detailed background introduction and full commentary and notes on the texts. Volume II also contains some valuable genealogical tables which clarify the complicated relationships between the Caucasian royal and princely families and their connection with the Russian, Ottoman and Persian ruling families. The main pagination is continuous with the previous volume (Second series 138). This is a new print-on-demand hardback edition of the volume first published in 1970.

Book excerpt: This easy-to-use reference explores the people and events that shaped Russian military history—and impacted Europe, Asia, and the world—over the past eight centuries. Russian military history is an often-overlooked field. Yet Russia is and has long been an important player in global politics, and its military exploits have been central to its role on the world stage. This study of Russia's military past provides insights into European and U.S. history, including the conduct of the two World Wars and the Cold War, and will help readers better appreciate the current geopolitical situation. This work covers major events and figures in Russian military history from the end of Mongol domination in the 14th century to the present day. More than 650 entries by scores of expert contributors detail events, individuals, organizations, and ideas that have influenced Russian warfare over 800 years. Two alphabetically arranged volumes explore such conflicts as the Russo-Polish Wars, the Great Northern War, the Russo-Turkish Wars, the Napoleonic Wars, the Crimean War, the Russo-Japanese War, World War I, World War II, and the Cold War, including the Soviet invasion of Afghanistan. Cross references and further readings in each entry serve as jumping-off points for further exploration.
