Über die Entstehung des Neuhochdeutschen wurden im Laufe der Jahre zahlreiche Theorien aufgestellt. Besonders interessant erscheinen in diesem Zusammenhang die völlig konträren Entstehungstheorien von Konrad Burdach und Theodor Frings. Burdachs Theorie, in der dieser sich vor allem auf die deutschen Kanzleien beruft, galt über längere Zeit unanfechtbar. Widerlegt wurde sie erstmals von Theodor Frings, welcher der Theorie Burdachs eine völlig andere Betrachtungsweise entgegenstellte. Theodor Frings wurde 1886 als Sohn eines Buchbinders in Dülken bei Krefeld geboren. Er promovierte 1911 in Marburg und habilitierte 1915 an der Universität in Bonn. Ab 1927 war er als Professor für Germanistik an der Universität Leipzig angestellt. Zu seinen Verdiensten gehört unter anderem der Entwurf eines komplett neuen Bildes vom Werdegang der neuhochdeutschen Schriftsprache.
