Book Jesus Farewell to the Disciples

Download or read book Jesus Farewell to the Disciples written by Tolmie and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2021-08-30 with total page 261 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Jesus' Farewell to the Disciples continues and intensifies the quest for uncovering the full potential of narrative criticism of the Fourth Gospel by means of a narratological analysis of John 13:1-17:26. After a discussion of theoretical issues the author selects a particular narratological model. This is discussed in detail and then utilised for a systematic analysis of John 13:1-17:26. The results of the analysis are integrated in order to indicate the way in which a particular perspective on discipleship is presented in these chapters. This book is important for scholars who are interested in the application of narrative criticism to biblical texts, as well as in the Johannine perspective on discipleship.

Book The God of the Gospel of John

Download or read book The God of the Gospel of John written by Marianne Meye Thompson and published by Wm. B. Eerdmans Publishing. This book was released on 2001-10-09 with total page 284 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: While there are numerous studies of God in the Old Testament, the concept of God has largely been ignored as a subject of inquiry in contemporary New Testament theology. As this superb work by Marianne Meye Thompson shows, however, an understanding of the identity of God is central to the New Testament, particularly to the Gospel of John. Thompson here offers the first comprehensive study of the concept of God in John's Gospel. She shows that one must first grasp the importance of God to John before one can properly appreciate the Gospel's Christology and overarching message. By arguing that John is rightly understood to be a "theocentric" work, Thompson challenges the prevailing theory that John is primarily concerned with Christology. While Thompson uses traditional historical and exegetical approaches to the New Testament and ancient sources, her study is mainly theological in scope. She asks how John portrays God and how, after reading the Gospel, we ought to speak of the identity of God. Unlike many recent studies of John, this one does not try to reconstruct the history behind the text but, rather, tries to fully illumine the theological content of John's message. A seminal study with lasting implications for New Testament theology, The God of the Gospel of John will become a standard text for students of the New Testament.

Book Ablution Initiation and Baptism

Download or read book Ablution Initiation and Baptism written by David Hellholm and published by Walter de Gruyter. This book was released on 2011-07-27 with total page 2089 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the web of cultural processes of late antiquity ablution rites and initiation rites were performed in different forms and in different contexts. Such rites existed in Early Judaism and Greco-Roman cults and were also applied in early Christianity under the label “baptism”, however, not as one fixed rite uniformly performed and interpreted. Baptismal rites developed diversely corresponding to the diversity among Christian groups of which some later came to be perceived as heretical. Remains of art, architecture and texts from these contexts were discussed in two conferences gathering scholars who are excellent within their respective fields: text studies, studies of rites, archaeology, architecture, history of art, and cultural anthropology. These different fields of research have in recent years generated new knowledge that is relevant for the discussion of ablution and initiation rites and their function in late antiquity. At the same time interests of research have altered in favour of a growing cooperation across discipline borders. The present volumes are the outcome of two conferences in Rome 2008 and at Metochi (Lesbos) 2009.

Book Pseudo Athanasius Contra Arianos IV

Download or read book Pseudo Athanasius Contra Arianos IV written by Markus Vinzent and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2015-12-22 with total page 480 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Until now the period following the Council of Nicea has remained a dark age of early Christian history. This is partly due to the fact that Eusebius' last and important works, Contra Marcellum and De Ecclesiastica Theologia, have not sufficiently been studied. Comparatively little interest has also been given to the Pseudo-Athanasian text Contra Arianos IV. Careful study and comparison of these works against the background of the post-Nicene debate between Asterius, Marcellus, Eusebius and Photinus, has revealed that (as A. Stegmann already proposed in 1917) Contra Arianos IV was written in about 340 and formed a Nicene critique of Marcellus, his pupil and opponents. Therefore, Stegmann's suggestion of the authorship of Apolinarius of Laodicea needs further investigation. This study on Contra Arianos IV sheds new light on the years between Nicea and the synods of Rome and Antioch (340/341).

Book From Quest to Q

Download or read book From Quest to Q written by James McConkey Robinson and published by Peeters Publishers. This book was released on 2000 with total page 414 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: On June 30th 1999, James M. Robinson formally retired from his position as Arthur Letts Jr. Professor of Religion at Claremont Graduate University. At this juncture in his life Peeters Publishers is proud to be the publisher of a festschrift, From Quest to Q, dedicated to Robinson, and his monumental contributions to the field of Q studies or the Sayings Gospel Q. The Festschrift is divided into four sections following an introduction written by Asgeirsson. The first section of the Festschrift entitled "From Source to Document" opens with a tribute to the jubilee whose very work within the International Q Project has, indeed transformed the hypothetical source into a document using a papyrological model. It is followed by two essays: one on the genre of the document Q and the other on the impact of Old Testament citations or allusions in Q or more specifically the Temptation Story in Q. The second section on "Founder and Fashion" visits in three essays the questions of the character of Jesus. Whom may he be likened to, what factors in the social environment of the followers of Jesus colored his manners and view of life? In a third section "Topos and Topics", four essays deal with diverse theological motifs in Q. From the breaking up of traditional family relationships to the question of the poor, this section also includes the motif of Son of man and the geographical topos, Nazara. The last section, "Q in Redaction" deals with several aspects of the redaction of Q in the Gospels of Matthew and Luke. Finally, in this section, two essays deal with parallel motifs in Q, the Gospel of Thomas, the Synoptic Gospels, as well as the Gospel of John. The contributors, from Europe and the United States, have all worked within the field of Q Studies and together comprise some of the most prominent names among junior and senior scholars in the field.

The book opens with an account of the history of the finds, and each subsequent chapter deals with a single but major area of scroll research. Each records an attempt to achieve in a given area a synthesis, or at least a systematic interpretation, of the facts now available. Old and new, published and unpublished data are drawn upon. For this revised edition, the history of the finds has been updated to the present, and a final chapter has been added detailing some of the author's views of and reactions to recent discussions and publications not found in the earlier editions.

Book Word and Glory

    Book Details:
  • Author : Craig A. Evans
  • Publisher : A&C Black
  • Release : 1993-11-01
  • ISBN : 1850754489

Download or read book Word and Glory written by Craig A. Evans and published by A&C Black. This book was released on 1993-11-01 with total page 250 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Word and Glory challenges recent claims that Gnosticism, especially as expressed in the Nag Hammadi tractate Trimorphic Protennoia, is the most natural and illuminating background for understanding the Prologue of the Fourth Gospel. Scriptural allusions and interpretive traditions suggest that Jewish wisdom tradition, mediated by the synagogue of the diaspora, lies behind the Prologue and the Fourth Gospel as a whole, not some form of late first-century Gnosticism. Several features of the Fourth Gospel reflect the synagogue and nascent Christianity's struggle to advance and defend its beliefs about Jesus who, as God's son and Agent, was understood as the embodiment of the Divine Word. All of the ingredients that make up Johannine christology derive from dominical tradition, refracted through the lens of Jewish interpretive traditions. There is no compelling evidence that this christology derived from or was influenced by gnostic mythology. Word and Glory also develops and tests criteria for assessing the relative value of post-New Testament sources for the interpretation of New Testament documents.
