Book Doing Double Dutch

Download or read book Doing Double Dutch written by Elke Brems and published by Leuven University Press. This book was released on 2017-05-22 with total page 339 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The importance of a minor language in the field of world literature Dutch literature is increasingly understood as a network of texts and poetics connected to other languages and literatures through translations and adaptations. In this book, a team of international researchers explores how Dutch literary texts cross linguistic, historical, geophysical, political, religious, and disciplinary borders, and reflects on a wide range of methods for studying these myriad border crossings. As a result, this volume provides insight into the international dissemination of Dutch literature and the position of a smaller, less-translated language within the field of world literature. The title Doing Double Dutch evokes a popular rope-skipping game in which two people turn two long jump ropes in opposite directions while a third person jumps them. A fitting metaphor for how literature circulates internationally: two dynamic spheres, the source culture and the target culture, engage one another in a complex pattern of movement resulting in a new literary work, translation, or adaptation formed somewhere in the middle. Book The Sorrow of Belgium

    Book Details:
  • Author : Hugo Claus
  • Publisher : Penguin Classics
  • Release : 1994-04
  • ISBN : 9780140188011
  • Pages : 608 pages

Download or read book The Sorrow of Belgium written by Hugo Claus and published by Penguin Classics. This book was released on 1994-04 with total page 608 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A classic novel in the tradition of The Tin Drum, The Sorrow of Belgium is a searing, scathingly funny portrait of a wartime Belgium and one boy's coming of age -- emotionally, sexually, and politically. In 1939, Louis Seynaeve, a ten-year-old Flemish student, is chiefly occupled with schoolboy adventures and lurid adolescent fantasies. Then the Nazis invade Belgium, and he grows up fast. Bewildered by his family -- a stuffy father who actually welcomes the occupation and a flirtatious mother who works for (and plays with) the Germans -- he is seemingly at the center of so much he can't understand. Gradually, as he confronts the horrors of the war and its aftermath, the eccentric and often petty behavior of his colorful relatives and neighbors, and his own inner turmoil, he achieves a degree of maturity -- at the cost of deep disillusion. Epic in scope, by turns hilarious and elegiac, The Sorrow of Belgium is the masterwork by one of the world's greatest contemporary authors. Book jacket.

Book Tyll Ulenspiegel und Lamme Goedzak

Download or read book Tyll Ulenspiegel und Lamme Goedzak written by Charles De Coster and published by Musaicum Books. This book was released on 2017-10-16 with total page 687 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.
