Book Citizenship and Collective Identity in Europe

Download or read book Citizenship and Collective Identity in Europe written by Ireneusz Pawel Karolewski and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2009-12-04 with total page 703 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is the first monograph to systematically explore the relationship between citizenship and collective identity in the European Union, integrating two fields of research – citizenship and collective identity. Karolewski argues that various types of citizenship correlate with differing collective identities and demonstrates the link between citizenship and collective identity. He constructs three generic models of citizenship including the republican, the liberal and the caesarean citizenship to which he ascribes types of collective identity. Using a multidisciplinary approach, the book integrates concepts, theories and empirical findings from sociology (in the field of citizenship research), social psychology (in the field of collective identity), legal studies (in the chapter on the European Charter of Fundamental Rights), security studies (in the chapter on the politics of insecurity) and philosophy (in the chapter on pathologies of deliberation) to examine the current trends of European citizenship and European identity politics. This book will be of interest to students and scholars of European politics, political theory, political philosophy, sociology and social psychology.

Book European Union Enlargement

Download or read book European Union Enlargement written by Thomas Mehlhausen and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2015-08-11 with total page 298 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The continuous expansion of the European Union has transformed its very own self-conception. While Eastern enlargement was widely celebrated as the ‘reuniting of Europe’, the sheer number of applicants, their low economic development and the need for new states to transform in accordance with EU values required considerable adjustments to the EU’s self-image. By examining the European Council’s contentious approval of the Mediterranean and Central and Eastern European countries in the 1970s and 1990s, this book investigates why the European Union enlarges. Based on new and hitherto not analysed data, it introduces the concept of ‘anomie’ to the discourse and, in doing so, makes a timely contribution to the literature of constitutional politics and enlargement of the European Union. This text will be of key interest to scholars and students of the European Union, area studies (European studies, central and east European studies, Mediterranean studies) and more broadly comparative politics and constitutional politics.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides a commentary on the law of the EU related to the Monetary Union. It contains a comprehensive analysis of all provisions of the Statute of the European System of Central Banks (ESCB) and the European Central Bank (ECB). In addition, the book also analyses all provisions of the Treaties themselves which regulate the ESCB and the ECB. This analysis is supplemented by commentaries on other Protocols which contain relevant rules for the Monetary Union. In essence, all relevant statutory rules governing the euro and its key monetary authority, the European Central Bank, are unfolded and explained in one volume. This gives the book a unique position in the legal literature on the law of the EU. With contributions by renowned academics and practitioners, this book is an expanded and updated translation of the 2013 German commentary, EWU Kommentar zu Europäischen Währungsunion (Mohr Siebeck) and is an invaluable resource for practitioners and academics alike who are looking for a provision-by-provision commentary on the laws governing the European Monetary Union.

Book New Regional Identities and Strategic Essentialism

Download or read book New Regional Identities and Strategic Essentialism written by Dietmar Rost and published by Lit Verlag. This book was released on 2008 with total page 556 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Identity has become an important issue in many European regions. However, it has happened at a time when many scientists adopt critical stances regarding the concept of identity. This paradox encourages the authors of this book to explore some current discourse on regional identity in Poland ('Swietokrzyskie, 'Slaskie, Warmi'nsko-Mazurskie), Italy (Trentino-South Tyrol, Friuli Venezia Giulia, Veneto) and Germany (Brandenburg). Accounts of nation state contexts, thorough exploration of fields most important to the shaping of regional identity (school, regional media, representations of history, regional politics ), and reflections on the concept of strategic essentialism are among the book's key features.

Book Geographies of Post Industrial Place Memory and Heritage

Download or read book Geographies of Post Industrial Place Memory and Heritage written by Mark Alan Rhodes II and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2020-11-23 with total page 202 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: All industrialization is deeply rooted within the specific geographies in which it took place, and echoes of previous industrialization continue to reverberate in these places through to the modern day. This book investigates the overlap of memory and the impacts of industrialization within today’s communities and the senses of place and heritage that grew alongside and in reaction to the growth of mines, mills, and factories. The economic and social change that accompanied the unchecked accumulation of wealth and exploitation of labor as the industrial revolution spread throughout the world has numerous lasting impacts on the socioeconomics of today. Likewise, the planet itself is now reeling. The memory and heritage of these processes reach into the communities that owe the industrial revolution their existence, but these populations also often suffered adverse impacts to their health and environment through the large-scale and rapid extraction of natural resources and production of goods. Through the themes of memory, community, and place; working post-industrial landscapes; and the de-romanticization of industrial pasts, this book examines the endurance and decline of these communities, the spatial processes of industrial byproducts, and the memory and heritage of industrialization and its legacies. While based in the traditions of geography, this collection also draws upon and will be of great interest to students and scholars of cultural anthropology, archaeology, sociology, history, architecture, civil engineering, and heritage, memory, museum, and tourism studies. Using global examples, the authors provide a uniquely geographic understanding to industrial heritage across the spaces, places, and memories of industrial development.
