Book excerpt: Journalist Konrad Heiden was one of the first to hear the young Adolf Hitler’s rousing orations and to recognize his political ingenuity and perverse, self-serving ideology. As a staff reporter on the Frankfurter Zeitung, Heiden was one of the first writers to take a stand against Nazism, and his is the only contemporary document to give the whole story of Hitler’s rise to power from the very beginning to the day in 1934 when the Blood Purge eliminated the last opposition, leaving him absolute dictator of Germany. As Heiden states, “his path of murder and violence was, in accordance with Hitler’s beliefs, the right path to greatness.” First published at the height of the Second World War, this new edition of Heiden’s work, which the New York Times Book Review called “remorselessly, ruthlessly objective,” shows it to be not only a profound and revealing narrative but also an important historical document essential to both historian and layman for a greater understanding of the calamitous events that dominated the twentieth century.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Hitler in the Movies: Finding Der Führer on Film, a Shakespearean and a sociologist explore the fascination our popular culture has with Adolf Hitler. What made him … Hitler? Do our explanations tell us more about the perceiver than the actual historical figure? We ask such question by viewing the Hitler character in the movies. How have directors, actors, film critics, and audiences accounted for this monster in a medium that reflects public tastes and opinions? The book first looks at comedic films, such as Chaplain’s The Great Dictator or Ernst Lubitsch’s To Be or Not to Be (1942), along with the Mel Brooks’s 1983 version. Then, there is the Hitler of fantasy, from trash films like The Saved Hitler’s Brain to a serious work like The Boys from Brazil where Hitler is cloned. Psychological portraits include Anthony Hopkins’s The Bunker, the surreal The Empty Mirror, and Max, a portrait of Hitler in his days in Vienna as a would-be artist. Documentaries and docudramas range from Leni Reinfenstahl’s iconic The Triumph of the Will or The Hidden Führer, to the controversial Hitler: A Film from Germany and Quentin Tarantino’s fanciful Inglourious Basterds. Hitler in the Movies also considers the ways Der Führer remains today, as a ghostly presence, if not an actual character. Why is he still with us in everything from political smears to video games to merchandise? In trying to explain this and the man himself, what might we learn about ourselves and our society?

Book excerpt: Many are the photographs of Hitler standing proudly in the passenger seat of a midnight blue Mercedes, arm outstretched in his famous salute to the adoring German crowds. Hitler loved cars and loved to be seen in and next to the special automobiles he purchased or was presented with through friends and Nazi Party funds. His first car was a 1920 green Selve 8/30, purchased in 1922, which was soon disposed of in favor of a Daimler-built Mercedes 15/70/100 – and from that moment on every car in which Hitler was chauffeured around the Third Reich and occupied countries would be a Mercedes. Indeed, even while in Landsberg prison following his failed putsch in 1923, he was writing to a Mercedes-Benz car salesman in Munich about his next car, concerning the merits of the Benz 11/40 versus the larger 16/50. It was a grey 11/40 in which Hitler was driven away from Landsberg on his release in 1924. It was in his next car – a super-charged Mercedes-Benz 15/70/100 – that Hitler was involved in an accident with a large truck in March 1930. The truck was completely wrecked while the large Mercedes suffered only minor damage. This prompted Hitler to remark: ‘It was then I decided to use only a Mercedes for the rest of my life.’ From 1930 onwards, Hitler was driven around in a Mercedes-Benz 770, also known as the Grosser Mercedes. Only 205 of these huge, luxury cars were manufactured with many of those being used by top-ranking Nazis. Such was Hitler’s interest in cars, he arranged state sponsorship for Mercedes and Porsche (Auto Union) to participate in Grand Prix racing (today’s F1). So strong was the resulting financial support that German teams swept all before them between 1935 and 1939. Security was always a great concern of Hitler and his entourage and his 770 was protected with bullet-proof windows and steel armor-plate built into all metal work. Wartime brought increased security fears, resulting in another Mercedes entering the German leader’s car collection. This was the heavily armored, six-wheel G4, the first off-road Mercedes, in which Hitler could safely parade through the streets of conquered lands. As well as providing photographs of Hitler’s cars and the men who became his chauffeur, John Starkey lists the technical specifications of those cars, and describes many of the journeys undertaken by the German leader over the course of two dramatic decades.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Written by Swords to the Knight's Cross holder and last regimental commander Otto Weidinger, Comrades to the End is the complete history of SS-Regiment "Der Führer." One of the original infantry regiments of the pre-war SS-Verfügungstruppe (Special Purpose Troops), "Der Führer" was formed in 1938 and fought throughout the war as a component of Division "Das Reich." Being among the most successful and decorated regiments of the Waffen-SS, this complete history was written with the full assistance of four highly decorated regimental commanders. In addition to Otto Weidinger, portions of the text were contributed by Georg Keppler (Knight's Cross), Sylvester Stadler (Swords to the Knight's Cross) and Otto Kumm (Swords to the Knights Cross). From its creation from primarily Austrian recruits through the Western Campaign, to the bitter battles in Russia where it was almost completely destroyed, the authors explain the engagements of this famous unit in full detail. Later it fought in Normandy and finally in Austria at the end of the war as one of the last fully battle ready units of the Waffen-SS. This classic study is now available for the first time in a complete English edition. With a preface by famed Waffen-SS commander Paul Hausser, the detailed text is illustrated by more than twenty regimental maps in addition to photographs.

Book excerpt: On May 8 1945, the German Armed Forces, outnumbered 2.5 to one, surrendered to the combined forces of three powerful empires. The British, Soviet and allied American colossus overwhelmed Germany's defenders. Civilians joined fighters who, from all corners of Europe, rushed to Berlin to defend the Reich's collapsing capital. Their heroic struggle was futile, Berlin fell. In its aftermath the most violent orgy of rape, pillage and burnt-earth destruction since the fury of Genghis Khan put Middle Ages Europe to the sword and fire. Since that date in May 1945, mainstream media and palace publishers have denigrated the Reich. The National Socialist revolution against expansionist Capitalism and Bolshevism has become distorted by victors spin. The Reich we read about is a fantasy far removed from reality. We are constantly told what the aims of National Socialism were, what the German Leader was supposed to have said and done. Missing from the narrative the first hand accounts of these events as witnessed and responded to by the visionary German Chancellor. Here, for the first time, in one volume, a synopsis of the Fuhrer's written and spoken response to events at the time. Thus Sprach der Fuhrer reveals the real Adolf Hitler, a prophet and revolutionary, arguably the most popular leader in European history. A refreshing change from the stereotype a fantasy caricature created by the victor's propagandists."

This book continues to explore how Nazism took hold in Germany; the issues of Hitler's beliefs and their role in the Third Reich; the factors that brought the party to power, and the structure and nature of both government and society in the Third Reich. It also develops further its analysis of the important issues of modernisation, gender, racial hygiene and the origins and implementation of the Holocaust.

Book excerpt: The personality of Hitler himself can hardly explain his immense hold over the German people. This study, a revised version of a book previously published in Germany under the title Der Hitler-Mythos: Volksmeinung und Propaganda im Dritten Reich, examines how the Nazis, experts in propaganda, accomplished the virtual deification of the Führer. Based largely on the reports of government officials, party agencies, and political opponents, Dr Kershaw charts the creation, growth, and decline of the 'Hitler Myth'.

Gone are the post-war stereotypes--instead there is a more complex picture of the regime and its actions, one that shows the instability of the dictatorship, its dependence on a measure of consent as well as coercion.

Book The F hrer Must Die

  • Publisher : Skyhorse

Download or read book The F hrer Must Die written by V. Andre King and published by Skyhorse. This book was released on 2016-11-08 with total page 249 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Experience the exciting and suspenseful tale of the man who almost took out one of the greatest villains in history—and lived to never tell the tale. On November 8, 1939, a nondescript German clockmaker named Georg Elser placed a bomb in a Munich beer hall where Hitler was scheduled to give a speech. His simple intent: to stop the impending onset of World War II. The bomb’s explosion missed the Fuhrer by only minutes, still killing more than 150 members of the Nazi Old Guard. After the attack, Elser was caught by happenstance at the porous Swiss border. When his family was threatened, he immediately confessed. There was only one problem: The Gestapo couldn’t accept his confession as a lone assassin. Elser fit none of the assassin profiles drawn up by the police. To them, it was inconceivable that a lone attempt could have been perpetrated by one of Hitler’s faithful and adoring citizens. A British conspiracy? Sure. But one of the Fatherland’s faithful? Impossible. The Führer Must Die is as much the policemen’s story as it is Elser’s, narrating the account of the detectives he destroyed and the Gestapo men he drove crazy—followed by chaos and a body count.
