Die Politikwissenschaftler Peter A. Hall und David Soskice haben in ihrem Buch „Varieties of Capitalism“ die deutsche Spielart des Kapitalismus eingeordnet und untersucht. Peter A. Hall ist Professor der Europawissenschaften und Co-Direktor des „Program on Successful Societies“ am Canadian Institute for Advanced Research. David Soskice ist Professor der Politikwissenschaft an der Duke University in North Carolina. Er hat darüber hinaus einen Lehrstuhl am Wissenschaftszentrum für Sozialforschung in Berlin (WZB) inne. Zur vergleichenden Analyse kapitalistischer Systeme wurden bisher der „modernization approach“ (Andrew A. Shonfield: 1965), der „neo-corporatism“ (Philippe Schmitter, Gerhard Lehmbruch: 1979) und der „social system of production approach“ (Michael J. Piore, Charles F. Sabel: 1986) herangezogen. Hall und Soskice legen den Schwerpunkt bei ihrem Ansatz auf die unterschiedlichen, institutionellen Ausprägungen politisch verfasster, ökonomischer Systeme und ermöglichen auf dieser Basis eine vergleichende Analyse nationalkapitalistischer Systeme. Dieser Ansatz wird auch „Institutionenökonomie“ genannt. Diese Arbeit will, ausgehend von Hall und Soskice, den Wandel der deutschen Spielart des Kapitalismus beschreiben. Dabei sollen die Spielart und der Ansatz der Autoren erläutert werden. Dazu werden nur einige Teilsphären der deutschen Kapitalismusvariante ausgewählt. Darüber hinaus soll mit Hilfe von themenbezogener Literatur, aktuellen Beispielen aus der Tagespresse und Statistiken überprüft werden, inwieweit der Ansatz zutreffend ist. Am Schluss sollen Aussagen dazu getroffen werden, ob Sicht von Hall und Soskice gestützt werden kann und wo Widersprüche bestehen.

Book excerpt: Business leaders exert extraordinary influence on institution building in market economies but they think and act within institutional settings. This book combines both an elite approach with a varieties-of-capitalism approach. Comparing Poland, Hungary and East and West Germany, we perceive the transformations in East Central Europe and in Germany after 1989 as being intertwined. Based on a joint survey, this book seeks to measure the level of the convergence of ideas among European business leaders, assuming it to be more extensive than the institutional convergence expected under the dominance of neoliberal discourse. Analyzing the institutional framework, organizational features like size, ownership and labour relations, and subjective characteristics like age, social origin, career patterns and attitudes of the recent business elites, we found significant differences between countries and the types of organization. The growing importance of economic degrees and internationalization shows astonishingly little explanatory power on the views of business leaders. The idea of a coordinated market economy is still relatively widespread among Germans, while their Hungarian and Polish counterparts are more likely to display a minimalist view of corporate responsibility to society and adverse attitudes towards employee representation. However, their attitudes frequently tend to be inconsistent, which mirrors the mixed type of capitalism in East Central Europe.

Book excerpt: Rhenish capitalism is an ideal-typical model of capitalism which is characterised by a bank-centered financing system, close economic ties between banks and companies, a balance of power between shareholders and management, and a social partnership between unions and employers. The West German economy of the 1950s to the 1980s is the prime example of that model of capitalism which contrasts with the liberal Anglo-Saxon forms of capitalism. In accordance with recent debates about Varieties of Capitalism, the authors argue that research on capitalism should pay more attention to change over time. The book also claims to put the firm into the centre of analysis. The empirical contributions uncover the differences between French and German corporate governance practices comparing two European automobile producers (VW and Renault), analyse legal debates and practices of corporate control in post-war Germany, show the tension between national corporate governance and increasing internationalisation by reference to four major West German producers of chemicals, pharmaceuticals and fibres; and explore the opportunities encountered by German big banks vis-à-vis their customers from big industry. Furthermore, they show that coordinating culture in the supply relationship of the German automobile industry came under pressure at the end of the boom and stress the importance of communication processes as a basis for interest coordination in Rhenish capitalism. The chapters in this book were originally published as a special issue of the journal Business History.
