Book excerpt: A method was developed to measure the depth profile of tritium implanted or absorbed in materials. The sample to be analyzed is bombarded with a pulsed proton beam and the energy of neutrons produced by the T(p, n) reaction is measured by the time-of-flight technique. From the neutron energy the depth in the target of the T atoms may be inferred. A sensitivity of 0.1 at. percent T or greater is possible. The technique is non-destructive and may be used with thick or radioactive host materials. Samples up to 20 [mu]m in thickness may be profiled with resolution limited by straggling of the proton beam for depths greater than 1 [mu]m. Deuterium depth profiling has been demonstrated using the D(d, n) reaction. The technique has been used to observe the behavior of an implantation spike of T produced by a 400 keV T beam stopping at a depth of 3 [mu]m in 11 [mu]m thick layers of Ti and TiH. The presence of H in the Ti lattice is observed to inhibit the diffusion of T through the lattice. Effects of the total hydrogen concentration (H + T) being forced above stoichiometry at the implantation site are suggested by the shapes of the implanation spikes. (auth).

Download or read book Ion Beam Handbook for Material Analysis written by James W. Mayer and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2012-12-02 with total page 511 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ion Beam Handbook for Material Analysis emerged from the U.S.-Italy Seminar on Ion Beam Analysis of Near Surface Regions held at the Baia-Verde Hotel, Catania, June 17-20, 1974. The seminar was sponsored by the National Science Foundation and the Consiglio Nazionale delle Ricerche under the United States-Italy Cooperative Science Program. The book provides a useful collection of tables, graphs, and formulas for those involved in ion beam analysis. These tables, graphs, and formulas are divided into five chapters that cover the following topics: energy loss and energy straggling; backscattering spectrometry; channeling; applications of ion-induced nuclear reactions; and the use of ion-induced X-ray yields.

Download or read book Determination of Hydrogen in Materials written by Pulat K. Khabibullaev and published by Springer. This book was released on 2006-04-11 with total page 96 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Measuring the hydrogen content in materials is important both for research and for various applications in material and surface sciences, such as hydrogen embrittlement of steel, controlled thermonuclear reaction first wall studies, and changed material properties caused by dissolved hydrogen. Hydrogen is the most difficult atomic species to analyze by traditional methods, but nuclear physics methods are particularly suited for this purpose. President of the Uzbek SSR Academy of Sciences P.K. Khabibullaev and Professor B.G. Skorodumov discuss in this book the characteristics of these methods, such as lower detection limits, selectivity in respect to different isotopes, accuracy, depth resolution and maximum detection depth. Examples of applications that are dealt with include the determination of material humidity, the dating of objects, the study of hydrogen diffusion including non-stationary processes, and the investigation of changes in material properties like superconductivity, plasticity and electrical properties due to contamination by hydrogen.
