Book On Optimal Depth from Defocus

Download or read book On Optimal Depth from Defocus written by Fahim Mannan and published by . This book was released on 2017 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "In depth from defocus (DFD) the objective is to estimate the depth dependent defocus blur at every pixel and in turn estimate depth. Defocus blur depends onthe focal length, focus distance, aperture size and scene depth. The general approach in DFD is to use a modeling function that evaluates different depth hypotheses. This thesis examines different aspects of these functions. For instance, How to accurately calibrate the depth dependent blur for different camera parameters and depth? How do uniqueness and variance depend on camera parameters and scene depth? How well do different models compare under different parameters and aperture shape? What is the unifying theme in all the different models? And how to learn models that are optimized for specific camera settings and range of depths? The main contributions of this thesis are: First, a simple and accurate approach for blur calibration is proposed which works under different camera parameters and scene depth. An extension of this is used to estimate the relative blur between two arbitrary blur kernels. Second, the conditions (i.e. camera parameters and scene depth) under which depth can be unambiguously estimated from defocus blur is investigated. Third, closed-form expressions relating the camera parameters and scene depth to the variance of depth estimates are derived. This analysis along with unambiguous depth estimation can be used to find the optimal camera parameters for a range of depths. The derivations are evaluated using real images. Fourth, the modeling accuracy of different models is experimentally evaluated using synthetic and real images with varying camera parameters and aperture shapes. This gives insight into the applicability of different models under different situations. Finally, a general model that includes a large set of the existing models is proposed. The model parameters are learned so as to minimize the bias and variance of depth estimates." --

Book Shallow Depth Map Estimation from Image Defocus Blur Point Spread Function Information

Download or read book Shallow Depth Map Estimation from Image Defocus Blur Point Spread Function Information written by 詹霖 and published by . This book was released on 2014 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The aim of this research is addressing both the influence of the limited aperture size of the optical imaging system of the camera, and the defocus aberration influence on output images in order to measure useful information such as defocus and depth through the MTF (Modulation Transfer Function), further we analyze the existing defocus levels by measuring the size of blur kernels. One of the goals of our study is to make shallow depth photos with blurry background; photographers need to use cameras such as SLR (single-lens reflex) not only for carefully choosing the best position with respect to the object but also changing the lens effective focal length or aperture size in order to obtain an artistic effect mostly desired in many types of photographs (e.g. portraits), which is not available for normal camera users who prefer to use low cost compact point-and-shot cameras; for their ease of use and convenience.Nowadays, the size of TFT-LCDs (thin-film-transistor liquid-crystal displays) is getting larger, as a result; it becomes harder to inspect defects that may exist which usually require a human visual examiner to judge the severity of the defects on the final product. These defects; so called mura (Japanese shorthand) are defined as visual blemish with non-uniform shapes and boundaries. It is becoming a very serious unpleasant effect which needs to be detected and inspected in order to characterize the LCD's quality. Through this research, we essentially propose two contributions. One that given only two images taken under different camera parameters, we measure a reliable defocus map based on scale-space analysis, then we propagate the defocus measures over edges to the entire image using matting process, eventually we will have a refined dense defocus map, which is utilized in applications such as amplifying the existing blurriness yielding a shallow depth photos from all focused images. On the other hand, it helps extracting the foreground object shape and isolating it from the background. The second contribution is experimentally detecting many types of MURA defects on LCD panels by some low-complex effective post-processing imaging techniques.Practically; we utilize the computational photography techniques to amplify defocus levels and to detect low contrast defects such as MURA. Our Computational techniques will allow the average photographers to capture more appealing photos, and the LCD manufacturers to increase their Engineer's efficiencies and performance. We strongly proof that this study will enable cameras and automated vision systems to embed useful computation with few user interventions.

Book Depth from Defocus Using Angle Sensitive Pixels Based on a Transmissive Diffraction Mask

Download or read book Depth from Defocus Using Angle Sensitive Pixels Based on a Transmissive Diffraction Mask written by Neeth Kunnath and published by . This book was released on 2018 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "An object in the scene whose image appears to be in focus is said to lie within the depth of field. Objects outside this volume appear blurred in the image. The shape of this defocus blur depends on the aperture. For a symmetric aperture, defocus blur has the same shape on either side of the focus plane. A consequence of this is that Depth from Defocus (DFD) methods that estimate object depth from defocus blur run into a blur ambiguity problem with symmetric apertures. While some methods use multiple images to resolve this ambiguity, it is a computationally heavy process. Airy3D, a start-up based in Montréal, Québec proposed an image sensor with Angle Sensitive Pixels (ASPs) based on a Transmissive Diffractio nMask (TDM). An ASP is a pixel that can detect light's intensity as well as its angle of incidence. ASPs have many advantages over regular pixels that respond only to the intensity of incident light. One such advantage lies in resolving the blur ambiguity. This thesis proposes a single image DFD approach which is free from the blur width ambiguity problem. This proposed DFD method using information about the angle of incidence of light provided by ASPs provide unambiguous blur width estimates even for symmetric apertures." --

Book Coded Aperture Imaging

Download or read book Coded Aperture Imaging written by Manuel Martinello and published by . This book was released on 2012 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This thesis studies the coded aperture camera, a device consisting of a conventional camera with a modified aperture mask, that enables the recovery of both depth map and all-in-focus image from a single 2D input image. Key contributions of this work are the modeling of the statistics of natural images and the design of efficient blur identification methods in a Bayesian framework. Two cases are distinguished: 1) when the aperture can be decomposed in a small set of identical holes, and 2) when the aperture has a more general configuration. In the first case, the formulation of the problem incorporates priors about the statistical variation of the texture to avoid ambiguities in the solution. This allows to bypass the recovery of the sharp image and concentrate only on estimating depth. In the second case, the depth reconstruction is addressed via convolutions with a bank of linear filters. Key advantages over competing methods are the higher numerical stability and the ability to deal with large blur. The all-in-focus image can then be recovered by using a deconvolution step with the estimated depth map. Furthermore, for the purpose of depth estimation alone, the proposed algorithm does not require information about the mask in use. The comparison with existing algorithms in the literature shows that the proposed methods achieve state-of-the-art performance. This solution is also extended for the first time to images affected by both defocus and motion blur and, finally, to video sequences with moving and deformable objects.

Book Computer Vision ECCV 2002

Download or read book Computer Vision ECCV 2002 written by Anders Heyden and published by Springer. This book was released on 2003-08-02 with total page 922 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Premiering in 1990 in Antibes, France, the European Conference on Computer Vision, ECCV, has been held biennially at venues all around Europe. These conferences have been very successful, making ECCV a major event to the computer vision community. ECCV 2002 was the seventh in the series. The privilege of organizing it was shared by three universities: The IT University of Copenhagen, the University of Copenhagen, and Lund University, with the conference venue in Copenhagen. These universities lie ̈ geographically close in the vivid Oresund region, which lies partly in Denmark and partly in Sweden, with the newly built bridge (opened summer 2000) crossing the sound that formerly divided the countries. We are very happy to report that this year’s conference attracted more papers than ever before, with around 600 submissions. Still, together with the conference board, we decided to keep the tradition of holding ECCV as a single track conference. Each paper was anonymously refereed by three different reviewers. For the nal selection, for the rst time for ECCV, a system with area chairs was used. These met with the program chairsinLundfortwodaysinFebruary2002toselectwhatbecame45oralpresentations and 181 posters. Also at this meeting the selection was made without knowledge of the authors’identity.
