  • Author : Diana Woodhouse
  • Publisher : Bloomsbury Publishing
  • Release : 2001-04-30
  • ISBN : 1847313000
  • Pages : 232 pages

Download or read book The Office of Lord Chancellor written by Diana Woodhouse and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2001-04-30 with total page 232 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The office of Lord Chancellor is one that has frequently been questioned. However, the extent and diversity of the questioning seldom attained the proportions reached in the final years of the twentieth century, when they drew attention to the deficiencies of the position of Lord Chancellor, the inherent tensions within that position and the incongruity of such a role in a modern democracy. This book examines these questions. It analyses the development and current position of the Lord Chancellor as head of the judiciary, member of the Cabinet, judge and Speaker in the House of Lords and considers his role in relation to judicial appointments. It also looks at the LCD, the development of which acts as an indicator of the changes in the office of Lord Chancellor. It concludes by making proposals for reform, the most far-reaching of which is the abolition of the office.

Book Asylum and Immigration Appeals Second Report of Session 2003 04 Vol 1 Report

Download or read book Asylum and Immigration Appeals Second Report of Session 2003 04 Vol 1 Report written by Alan J. Beith and published by . This book was released on 2004 with total page 46 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of this inquiry was to investigate the effects of the Nationality, Immigration and Asylum Act 2002, and examine the efficiency and fairness of the system of asylum and immigration appeals. However, since it was set-up, proposals for the appeals system have been updated and the Government has introduced the Asylum and Immigration (Treatment of Claimants, etc) Bill. The Committee has thus evaluated these new developments. They are concerned that the current reforms have been drafted to deal with the issue of asylum rather than addressing the problems of immigration appeals, and they do not see how abolishing the second tier of appeals will prevent abuse. They are also concerned about measures to restrict the jurisdiction of courts. As for the 2002 Act, there has been too little time to monitor the impact.

Book I m Not Racist But 40 Years of the Racial Discrimination Act

Download or read book I m Not Racist But 40 Years of the Racial Discrimination Act written by Tim Soutphommasane and published by NewSouth. This book was released on 2015-06-01 with total page 242 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Is Australia a 'racist' country? Why do issues of race and culture seem to ignite public debate so readily? Tim Soutphommasane, Australia's Race Discrimination Commissioner, reflects on the national experience of racism and the progress that has been made since the introduction of the Racial Discrimination Act in 1975. As the first federal human rights and discrimination legislation, the Act was a landmark demonstration of Australia's commitment to eliminating racism. Published to coincide with the Act's fortieth anniversary, this book gives a timely and incisive account of the history of racism, the limits of free speech, the dimensions of bigotry and the role of legislation in our society's response to discrimination. With contributions by Maxine Beneba Clarke, Bindi Cole Chocka, Benjamin Law, Alice Pung and Christos Tsiolkas.
