Book Coping with Heart Surgery and Bypassing Depression

Download or read book Coping with Heart Surgery and Bypassing Depression written by Carol Cohan and published by . This book was released on 1998 with total page 300 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Knowledge is power. Study after scientific study has shown that the right kind of information about a medical problem speeds recovery. And when that medical problem is heart surgery, information specially tailored to answer patients; questions, quiet their fears, and give them a sense of control over their circumstances promises the quickest and most complete recovery possible. This unique combination of practical information and solutions to common problems fills the pages of Coping with Heart Surgery and Bypassing Depression. The problems associated with heart surgery become less threatening when you know what to expect, when you understand the problems you encounter, and when you can solve those problems. Accordingly, Coping with Heart Surgery and Bypassing Depression spells out everything you need to know to enter surgery with confidence and recover swiftly and smoothly. The book provides detailed information about the events that accompany each stage of the heart surgery experience from the time surgery is recommended until months after convalescence is under way. It discusses what other patients encountered at each stage, problems that arose, and a variety of solutions. And it invites you to pick and choose among the suggestions to suit your particular needs and personality style.

Book Examining the Relation Between Depression and Anxiety Disorders and Coronary Artery Bypass Grafting CABG Surgery Outcomes

Download or read book Examining the Relation Between Depression and Anxiety Disorders and Coronary Artery Bypass Grafting CABG Surgery Outcomes written by Julia Poritz and published by . This book was released on 2012 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Age, gender, and medical comorbidities (e.g., diabetes) are known to contribute to poor outcomes following CABG surgeries, but recent research has suggested that these traditional risk factors cannot sufficiently explain signs of poor outcome following CABG surgery (Blumenthal et al., 2003; Saur et al., 2001). For this reason, psychological risk factors have been considered as additional explanations for CABG outcomes. Thus, the present study investigated the relation between diagnoses of depression, anxiety disorders, and PTSD, and outcome variables, such as length of stay, mortality, and discharge disposition following CABG. Results showed that preoperative depression, anxiety, and PTSD independently contributed to increased length of stay, increased in-hospital mortality, and increased likelihood of non-routine discharge following CABG surgery. The results from this study provide additional support for the importance of pre-surgical screening for psychological disorders as well as the development and implementation of pre-surgical interventions to facilitate better outcomes following CABG surgeries.

Book Gender and Recovery from Coronary Artery Bypass Surgery

Download or read book Gender and Recovery from Coronary Artery Bypass Surgery written by Friederike Kendel and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2009-01-24 with total page 106 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Progress in coronary artery bypass graft surgery has irrefutably improved the quality of life of many patients. However, we are confronted with the finding that women - hibit a higher mortality rate than men. In part, this difference can be explained by clinical parameters such as age, disease severity, or comorbidity – factors that have been well studied, but which do not fully explain the observed differences. This is one reason why, in recent years, psychosocial variables have attracted special atten- on in this context. In fact, women and men having undergone a bypass operation - ry a great deal with respect to, e. g. , depression, partner status, and socio-economic status. Moreover, psychological well-being, on the one hand, and social isolation, on the other hand, definitely influence the recovery process, particularly when consi- red under the gender aspect. The Deutsches Herzzentrum Berlin has been actively supporting gender-specific research for many years. In this context, a large prospective study on gender dif- rences in recovery after bypass surgery, carried out by the Competence Network of Heart Failure, was started at our Department for Cardiothoracic and Vascular Sur- ry. From the beginning of the study, psychosocial variables were included as being substantial contributors. The starting point of the study presented here* by psychologist Dr. Friederike Kendel are recent empirical investigations about gender differences in coronary heart disease and the course of recovery after bypass surgery.

Book Brain and Heart Dynamics

Download or read book Brain and Heart Dynamics written by Stefano Govoni and published by Springer. This book was released on 2020-07-31 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This ambitious and comprehensive handbook represents an essential contribution to our current understanding of interactions between heart and brain, a research topic generating growing interest. Despite the increasing awareness that neural mechanisms are the primary cause of cardiac disease and its progression, therapy continues to focus on end-organ protection and does not approach the neural core of the problem. Growing public health problems such as heart failure are still treated with autonomic drugs that are 30-40 years old and simply act on cardiac receptors. However, it has now been shown that the progression of ischemic heart disease to heart failure is mainly due to abnormal central responses to incipient cardiac disease, with neural activation the primary cause rather than the consequence of cardiac remodeling. Written by leading international experts in their respective research areas, the book presents a variety of perspectives on the core topic: from social and philosophical to gender-related aspects. It is designed for a broad readership and includes dedicated sections for cardiologists, psychiatrists, neurologists and psychotherapists looking for a more insightful and targeted approach to neuro-cardiovascular disease.

Book Handbook of Psychocardiology

Download or read book Handbook of Psychocardiology written by Marlies Alvarenga and published by Springer. This book was released on 2017-11-11 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This handbook brings together the full weight of contemporary evidence bearing on what is now commonly termed “psycho-cardiology”. It focuses on the role of psycho-social factors in the genesis and clinical management of cardiovascular disease (CVD). The book constitutes a critically reviewed compendium of current knowledge in the area, coupled with guides to evidence-based best practice in the field of psycho-cardiology. The following categories are covered: Social/demographic risk for CVD, Personality and CVD risk, Stress and CVD risk, Psychopathology (particularly affective disorders) and CVD risk, The psychological management of those with clinical CVD, Psychology in the prevention of CVD. The book integrates the evidence into a compelling argument that clinicians, researchers and those in public health will discount the role of psychological factors in regard to CVD at their own peril. And importantly for clinicians charged with the care of patients with CVD, the book poses the argument that failure to recognize the links between psychological factors and CVD may well be at the considerable peril of those patients under their care.

Book Association Between Gender and Depression After Coronary Artery Bypass Graft Surgery

Download or read book Association Between Gender and Depression After Coronary Artery Bypass Graft Surgery written by Bernadette Skruck and published by . This book was released on 2010 with total page 48 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Problem: Previous research suggests that women have a worse outcome than men after coronary artery bypass surgery. It had also been shown that women in general have more depression than their male counterparts. The aim of this literature review is to determine whether or not women have more depression than men after coronary artery bypass surgery. Methods: A PubMed search via the Weill Cornell Medical Library database was conducted to identify articles focusing on gender differences, depression, and coronary artery bypass surgery. Nine articles were reviewed for this study and seven others were used for background information. Results: Based on the literature reviewed, women had more depression than men after coronary artery bypass graft surgery. These women were older, single, had less social support, and did more housework. Seven articles showed that more women than men suffered from depressive symptoms post operatively. However, two of those articles showed no significant differences in depression controlling for gender. The remaining articles reviewed consisted of findings that did not support the question of this study. Depression in women improved after surgery with the help of preoperative evaluations, use of antidepressant medications, and gender specific cardiac rehabilitation programs. Conclusion: Studies showed that women have more depression post operatively than men and those women who started out with depressive symptoms prior to surgery also had depressive symptoms after surgery.

This book was released on 2011-05-04 with total page 649 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Cardiothoracic Surgery in the Elderly: Evidence Based Practice is an important and timely book that reflects the thoughtful work of pioneers in geriatric surgery. It encompasses their knowledge related to geriatric surgery, and their reflections and guidance on the rapidly accumulating knowledge related to improving the health and surgical care of seniors. This book provides a scholarly review of the constantly expanding knowledge base about cardiovascular and thoracic surgery in seniors. The book follows a logical sequence covering general aspects of care, cardiac surgery and thoracic surgery. Chapters are focused on common, devastating and often missed complications of surgical care in the seniors. These include delirium, depression, pressure sores, functional losses, incontinence, volume depletion and asymptomatic or atypical complications -myocardial infarction, post-operative diarrhea, urinary track infections and pneumonia. Each is expertly reviewed. Strategies to help the surgeons and the surgical team anticipate, recognize and effectively prevent or manage such problems are discussed and the evidence basis for such strategies is provided. Cardiothoracic Surgery in the Elderly: Evidence Based Practice is particularly timely and the first to review the substantial body of knowledge that has been developed in recent years related to geriatric cardiothoracic surgical problems. It catalogs well the expanding knowledge basis for achieving successful surgical outcomes in the very old. It provides a most useful resources for cardiovascular thoracic surgeons in training and those already in practice.
