Book excerpt: Excerpt from Depositions Taken Before the Mayor Aldermen of Norwich, 1549 1567: Extracts From the Court Books of the City of Norwich, 1666 1688 Curious details as to the hiring of four hackney horses from the Windmill in London (the same house as that from which the brown bay gelding came) are given at p. 87, from which it would seem that the price was a shilling a day per horse, with a minimum of which would imply the average journey to and from London took nine days or more. As to the supply of the market there is not much, though it seems that Acle farmers sent into Lincolnshire to buy steers and oxen (p. But there are sidelights thrown on city regulations now forgotten, for example, on p. 25 we see that it was customary for a clerk of the market to enter every sack of grain sold there, and that it is probable that there was some premium paid to those who sent corn in to be sold. Book Social Relations and Urban Space

Download or read book Social Relations and Urban Space written by Fiona Williamson and published by Boydell & Brewer Ltd. This book was released on 2014 with total page 248 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book offers an insight into the social relationships and topographies that fashioned both city life and landscape and serves as a useful counterpoise in a field that has largely focused on London. This is a book about seventeenth-century Norwich and its inhabitants. At its core are the interconnected themes of social topographies and the relationships between urban inhabitants and their environment. Cityscapes were, and are, shaped and given meaning during the practice of people's lived experiences. In return, those same urban places lend human interactions depth and quality. Social Relations and Urban Space uncovers manifold possible landscapes, including those belonging to the rich and to the poor, to men, to women, to 'strangers and foreigners', to political actors of both formal and informal means. Norwich's inhabitants witnessed the tumultuous seventeenth centuryat first hand, and their experiences were written into the landscape and immortalised in its exemplary surviving records. This book offers an insight into the social relationships and topographies that fashioned both city life and landscape and serves as a useful counterpoise in a field that has largely focused on London. Book On the Parish

  • Author : Steve Hindle
  • Publisher : OUP Oxford

Download or read book On the Parish written by Steve Hindle and published by OUP Oxford. This book was released on 2004-08-05 with total page 536 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: On the Parish? is a study of the negotiations which took place over the allocation of poor relief in the rural communities of sixteenth, seventeenth and early eighteenth century England. It analyses the relationships between the enduring systems of informal support through which the labouring poor made attempts to survive for themselves; the expanding range of endowed charity encouraged by the late sixteenth century statutes for charitable uses; and the developing system of parish relief co-ordinated under the Elizabethan poor laws. Based on exhaustive research in the archives of the trustees who administered endowments, of the overseers of the poor who assessed rates and distributed pensions, of the magistrates who audited and co-ordinated relief and of the royal judges who played such an important role in interpreting the Elizabethan statutes, the book reconstructs the hierarchy of provision of relief as it was experienced among the poor themselves. It argues that receipt of a parish pension was only the final (and by no means the inevitable) stage in a protracted process of negotiation between prospective pensioners (or 'collectioners', as they came to be called) and parish officers. This running theme is itself reflected in a series of chapters whose sequence seeks to mirror the experience of indigence, moving gradually (and by stages) from the networks of care provided by kin and neighbours into the bureaucracy of the parish relief system, emphasising in particular the importance of labour discipline in the thinking of parish officers. By illuminating the workings of a relief system in which notions of entitlement were both under-developed and contested, On the Parish? provides historical perspective for contemporary debates about the rights and obligations of the poor in a society where the dismantling of the welfare state implies that there is, once again, no right to relief from cradle to grave.

Book War State and Society in England and the Netherlands 1477 1559

Download or read book War State and Society in England and the Netherlands 1477 1559 written by Steven Gunn and published by OUP Oxford. This book was released on 2007-11-15 with total page 416 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Exploring the effects of war on state power in early modern Europe, this book asks if military competition increased rulers' power over their subjects and forged more modern states, or if the strains of war broke down political and administrative systems. Comparing England and the Netherlands in the age of warrior princes such as Henry VIII and Charles V, it examines the development of new military and fiscal institutions, and asks how mobilization for war changed political relationships throughout society. Towns in England, such as Norwich, York, Exeter, and Rye, are compared with towns in the Netherlands, such as Antwerp, Leiden, 's-Hertogenbosch and Valenciennes, to see how the magistrates' relations with central government and the urban populace were modified by war. Great noblemen from the Howard and Percy families are set alongside their equivalents from the houses of Cro and Egmond to examine the role of recruitment, army command, and heroic reputation in maintaining noble power. The wider interactions of subjects and rulers in wartime are reviewed to measure how effectively war extended princes' claims on their subjects' loyalty and service, their ambitions to control news and opinion and to promote national identity, and their ability to manage the economy and harness religious change to dynastic purposes. The result is a compelling but nuanced picture of societies and polities tested and shaped by the pressures of ever more demanding warfare.

Book Prosecuting Crime in the Renaissance

Download or read book Prosecuting Crime in the Renaissance written by John H. Langbein and published by The Lawbook Exchange, Ltd.. This book was released on 2005 with total page 336 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Our present system of criminal prosecution originated in England in the sixteenth century. Langbein traces its development, which was at its most intense during the reign of Queen Mary. He shows how the common law developed a system of official investigation and prosecution that incorporated the medieval institution of the jury trial. He places equal emphasis on the role of the justices of the peace as public prosecutors. The second half of the book compares the English system with those of the Holy Roman Empire (Germany) and France. He concludes by refuting the popular opinion that the English were strongly indebted to continental models. "This is an excellent work of scholarship, exhibiting wide research, erudition and analytical ability." --Joseph H. Smith, Harvard Law Review 88 (1974-1975) 485 JOHN LANGBEIN is Sterling Professor of Law and Legal History at Yale Law School. He has held academic positions at Stanford University, Oxford University, the Max-Planck-Institut für Europäische Rechtsgeschichte and the Max-Planck-Institut für Ausländisches und Internationales Strafrecht.
