Book excerpt: The Eastern Shelf was a constructional platform developed on the margin of the sediment-starved Midland Basin during Late Pennsylvanian and Early Permian time. A mixed terrigenous-carbonate sedimentary province characterized the shelf during most of its history. Sediments were derived from highlands to the east and northeast. Along the outcrop in Eastland, Stephens, Young, and Jack counties, uppermost Pennsylvanian beds compose the Harpersville Formation, a boundary-defined rock stratigraphic unit within the Cisco Group. Harpersville facies extend westward into the subsurface 50 to 60 miles, where they grade into equivalent shelf margin carbonate and slope terrigenous facies. Preserved relief between the shelf margin and basin floor ranges from 600 to 1100 feet with dips of up to five degrees. Three depositional systems are recognized on the basis of gross lithologic composition and position relative to the shelf edges. They are the Cisco fluvial-deltaic system, the Sylvester shelf edge bank systern, and the Sweetwater slope system. The Cisco fluvial-deltaic system is composed of dip-fed fluvial-deltaic facies and associated strike-fed interdeltaic embayment facies. Eight deltaic lobe complexes have been mapped. The Sylvester slope system is composed of several slope wedges or fans each of which includes shelf margin, slope trough, and distal slope sandstone facies, as well as slope mudstone facies. Terrigenous sediments were transported across the shelf by prograding fluvial-deltaic channels, which locally extended through the shelf edge bank system and onto the slope where submarine fans were constructed into the basin. The Eastern Shelf prograded into the Midland Basin by local upbuilding through fluvial, deltaic, and shelf edge bank deposition contemporaneous with outbuilding by slope fan deposition. Sites of shelf construction shifted through time in response to sedimentary and structurally controlled abandonment of delta lobes. Extrabasinal controls such as eustatic sea level changes were of secondary importance in developing the depositional fabric of the shelf.

Book excerpt: The reserves, or extractable fraction, of the fuel-mineral endowment are sufficient to supply the bulk of the world's energy requirements for the immediately forseeable future-well into the next century according to even the most pessimistic predictions. But increasingly sophisticated exploration concepts and technology must be employed to maintain and, if possible, add to the reserve base. Most of the world's fuel-mineral resources are in sedimentary rocks. Any procedure or concept that helps describe, under stand, and predict the external geometry and internal attributes of major sedimentary units can therefore contribute to discovery and recovery of coal, uranium, and petroleum. While conceding the desirability of renewable and nonpolluting energy supply from gravitational, wind, or solar sources, the widespread deployment of these systems lies far in the future-thus the continued commercial emphasis on conventional nonrenewable fuel mineral resources, even though their relative significance will fluctuate with time. For example, a decade ago the progilostications for uranium were uniformly optimistic. But in the early 1980s the uranium picture is quite sombre, although unlikely to remain permanently depressed. Whether uranium soars to the heights of early expectations remains to be seen. Problems of waste disposal and public acceptance persist. Fusion reactors may ultimately eliminate the need for uranium in power generation, but for the next few decades there will be continued demand for uranium to fuel existing power plants and those that come on stream. This book is, to some extent, a hybrid.

Book excerpt: Nonrenewable energy resources, comprising fossil fuels and uranium, are not ran domly distributed within the Earth's crust. They formed in response to a complex array of geologic controls, notably the genesis of the sedimentary rocks that host most commercial energy resources. It is this genetic relationship between economic re sources and environment that forms the basis for this book. Our grouping of petro leum, coal, uranium, and ground water may appear to be incongruous or artificial. But our basic premise is that these ostensibly disparate resources share common genetic attributes and that the sedimentological principles governing their natural distributions and influencing their recovery are fundamentally similar. Our combined careers have focused on these four resources, and our experiences in projects worldwide reveal that certain recurring geologic factors are important in controlling the distribution of com mercial accumulations and subsurface fluid flow. These critical factors include the shape and stability of the receiving basin, the major depositional elements and their internal detail, and the modifications during burial that are brought about in these sediments by pressure, circulating fluids, heating, and chemical reaction. It was also our feeling that the time for shales to receive more study had finally arrived. Sedimentology of Shale also seems very timely because today more sedimentologists are interested in shales. Certainly in the last five years the pace of shale research has no ticeably quickened because the role of shales as important sources of oil, gas, heavy metals and as a long understudied part of the earth's geologic his tory has been recognized. Noteworthy developments include the elucida tion of the importance of trace fossils in shales, the discovery of thick sequences of overpressured shales in regions such as the Gulf Coast (which have important implications for hydrocarbon migration and faulting), the ex tension of the principles of metamorphic facies to the realm of low tempera ture diagenesis by study of the organic matter in shales, and shales as ul timate sources for mineral deposits. Accordingly, we decided it was timely to write a book on shales. In one respect, however, ours is an unusual book. Most books in geology are produced after one or two decades of progress have been made in a field and attempt to summarize and evaluate that progress.
