Book Depositional Environments of the Prince Creek Formation Along the East Side of the Toolik Rover Sagavanirktok Quadrangle North Slope Alaska

Download or read book Depositional Environments of the Prince Creek Formation Along the East Side of the Toolik Rover Sagavanirktok Quadrangle North Slope Alaska written by Peter Paul Flaig and published by . This book was released on 2015 with total page 17 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A 175-m-thick succession of nonmarine facies of the Prince Creek Formation along the east side of the Toolik River in the Sagavanirktok Quadrangle is interpreted as the deposits of meandering rivers and their associated floodplains. Facies consist of fine- to medium-grained sandstone, siltstone, mudstone, carbonaceous shale, and coal. Depositional environments of the Prince Creek Formation along the Toolik River include meandering river channels, levees, crevasse channels and crevasse splays, lakes, swamps, mires, and soil-forming environments. Sand bodies in the succession exhibit a low degree of interconnectedness and are encased in floodplain deposits. Floodplains were well preserved, extensively vegetated, and wet. Fine-grained successions containing abundant mud, silt, carbonaceous shale, and coal are up to 20 m thick in outcrops along the Toolik River and dominate the stratigraphy. This implies that lakes, marshes, mires and swamps likely persisted for prolonged periods in this region. The abundance of water-dependent floodplain facies coupled with the presence of isolated sand bodies encased in these finer-grained deposits indicates that the region likely experienced an extended period of elevated base level, possibly as the result of sustained high subsidence rates related to lithospheric loading in the evolving Brooks Range orogenic belt to the south.

Book Brookian Core Workshop

Download or read book Brookian Core Workshop written by David L. LePain and published by . This book was released on 2018 with total page 59 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This workshop will examine cores from five wells (Wainwright 1, Square Lake Test Well 1, Wolf Creek Test Well 3, Umiat 18, and Fish Creek Test Well 1) representing a range of depositional settings in the Nanushuk Formation, from marine-influenced lower delta plain to outer shelf. A range of lower delta plain facies associations, including bayfill, distributary channel-fills, and crevasse deltas are featured in cores from Wainwright 1, Square Lake Test Well 1, and Wolf Creek Test Well 3. Storm wave-modified shoreface and delta-front facies associations comprise significant parts of the successions cored in the Square Lake and Wolf Creek wells and demonstrate that significant stretches of the Nanushuk coastline were subjected to powerful storm waves. The cored succession in Umiat 18 is comprised of prodelta and river-dominated delta-front facies associations. Heavily oil-stained outer shelf facies associations comprise the cored interval in Fish Creek Test Well 1. This workshop highlights facies associations likely to have the best reservoir potential and examines the relative importance of depositional setting, sandstone composition, grain size, and mechanical compaction on reservoir quality (porosity and permeability).

Book Subsurface Facies Architecture and Sequence Stratigraphy of the Eileen Sandstone Shublik Formation and Sag River Sandstone Arctic Alaska

Download or read book Subsurface Facies Architecture and Sequence Stratigraphy of the Eileen Sandstone Shublik Formation and Sag River Sandstone Arctic Alaska written by Erik Jason Hulm and published by . This book was released on 1999 with total page 210 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The Upper Triassic through Lower Jurassic on Alaska's North Slope is a critical stratigraphic interval underlying a major sequence boundary between pre-rift and syn-rift mega-sequences. This study is a subsurface analysis of the units immediately underlying this boundary to better understand the paleogeography, depositional controls, and timing of initial extension associated with rifting to form the Canada Basin. Well data from across the North Slope were utilized to describe and interpret the facies architecture, depositional setting, and sequence stratigraphy of the Eileen sandstone, Shublik Formation, and Sag River Sandstone. The stratigraphic interval was subdivided into three depositional sequences deposited during three episodes of relative sea-level rise and fall. The sequences correlate with eustatic sea-level curves, implying eustatic sea-level change was a depositional control. Pronounced along-strike thickness variations of sequence geometries has identified a series of paleohighs that also influenced depositional patterns and potentially represent the earliest signals of rift-related tectonism"--Leaf 3.
