Book Chemistry of Engine Combustion Deposits

Download or read book Chemistry of Engine Combustion Deposits written by Lawrence B. Ebert and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 379 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: On March 30, 1981, a symposium entitled "Chemistry of Engine Combustion Deposits" was held at the 181st American Chemical Society National Meeting in Atlanta, Georgia, under the sponsorship of the Petroleum Division. This book is an out growth of that symposium, including papers from all of the At 1 anta presentors, as we 11 as from others who were i nvi ted to contribute. Research on engine deposits has not been as "glamorous" as in the rel ated fossil fuel areas of petrol eum, coal, or oil shale, and publications in the field have been largely confined to combustion and automotive engineering journals. One objec tive of this book is to bring a large body of work on the chemistry of deposits into more general accessibility. We hope to make people more familiar with what deposits are, with what problems they cause, and with what present workers are doing to solve these problems. The creation of the book has involved many people. Patricia M. Vann of Plenum Publishing Corporation gave guidance in planning. We thank Claire Bromley, Ellen Gabriel, and Halina Markowski for the preparation of many of the Exxon contribu tions. Finally, we thank Joseph C. Scanlon for his useful advice and encouragement.

Download or read book Relation of Preignition and Knock to Allowable Engine Temperatures written by Arnold E. Biermann and published by . This book was released on 1943 with total page 72 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The results are given of an investigation of some of the limitations that now prevent increases in the temperature level of engine cylinder heads, and a review of previous work in the field is included to supplement these results. Attention was given, in particular, to the effects of fuel knock and surface ignition on cylinder temperatures and the effects of cylinder temperatures on performance. Data were obtained from a Wright C9GC air-cooled cylinder and from a Lycoming O-1230 liquid-cooled cylinder.

Book Development of a telemetry system for monitoring piston characteristics inside combustion engines

Download or read book Development of a telemetry system for monitoring piston characteristics inside combustion engines written by Paul Lagaly and published by Logos Verlag Berlin GmbH. This book was released on 2024-05-06 with total page 128 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This project aimed to develop a compact and lightweight telemetry system that mechanically decouples measurements, enabling versatile applications across different measurement scenarios, particularly for pistons and other moving systems. Utilizing an ESP8266, a printed circuit board design was created from individually tested integrated circuits, which formed the foundation for measuring various physical variables. Given the challenging conditions inside a piston of an internal combustion engine, ensuring high robustness was paramount during the electrical engineering process to prevent failures due to high temperatures and acceleration levels. Alongside the installation process for thermocouples, software for energy-efficient measurement with customizable resolution and optional transmission via Wi-Fi or internal storing was developed. Demonstrating feasibility during full-load operation of a heavy-duty diesel engine, the telemetry system with a high-resolution surface thermocouple was integrated in one piston to establish a method for assigning crank angles, enabling measurement and transmission of surface temperatures with crank angle resolution. Further series of measurements, including the use of alternative fuels, were conducted with a third piston, expanding the findings. The outcome is an innovative telemetry measurement device capable of recording experimental data from moving components, potentially expediting market solutions by reducing development times.

Book Fuel Engine Interactions

Download or read book Fuel Engine Interactions written by Gautam Kalghatgi and published by SAE International. This book was released on 2013-10-08 with total page 275 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Conventional fossil fuels will constitute the majority of automotive fuels for the foreseeable future but will have to adapt to changes in engine technology. Unconventional transport fuels such as biofuels, gas-to-liquid fuels, compressed natural gas, and liquid petroleum gas will also play a role. Hydrogen might be a viable transport fuel if it overcomes barriers in production, transport, storage, and safety and/or if fuel cells become viable. This book opens by considering these issues and then introduces practical transport fuels. A chapter on engine deposits follows, which is an important practical topic about how fuels affect engines that is not usually considered in other books. The next three chapters discuss auto-ignition phenomena in engines. The auto-ignition resistance of fuels is the most important fuel property since it limits the efficiency of spark ignition engines and determines the performance of compression ignition engines. Moreover, the manufacture of fuels is primarily driven by the need to meet auto-ignition quality demands set by fuel specifications. The final chapter considers the implications for future fuels. The book covers the many important ways that fuels and engines interact and why and how fuels will need to change to meet the requirements of future engines, as well as the implications for fuels manufacture and specifications.

Book Experimental root cause analysis of low speed pre ignition mechanisms on a turbocharged gasoline engine with direct injection

Download or read book Experimental root cause analysis of low speed pre ignition mechanisms on a turbocharged gasoline engine with direct injection written by Thorsten Schweizer and published by Logos Verlag Berlin GmbH. This book was released on 2024-07-04 with total page 140 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The concept of increasing power density is a successful approach to improving the conflict between efficiency and emission behavior of spark-ignition engine drive units for light-duty vehicles. This leads to highly charged gasoline engines with direct injection and high specific torque and power densities, promoting a not yet fully understood combustion anomaly known as low-speed pre-ignition (LSPI). This unpredictable, multicyclic phenomenon limits the depictable in-cylinder pressures, further efficiency gains and engine reliability. Only with a holistic understanding of the LSPI root cause mechanisms and processes can targeted countermeasures be taken and further efficiency gains achieved. A novel methodology pathway for LSPI root cause analysis was developed to accompany the entire LSPI event emergence process path by means of a multi-experimental approach on a modern high efficiency engine. This includes the identification of key LSPI activity – engine parameter specification relations, minimally invasive high-speed endoscopic imaging and further LSPI key experiments. Only the accumulation of inorganic substances originating from lubricating oil additives enables specific deposits/particles to ignite the surrounding mixture over a multicyclic process due to the resulting increased oxidation reactivity. Through a final synthesis step of all results, a multi-cycle oxidation-reactivity-enhanced deposit/particle-driven LSPI root cause mechanism is established.
