Book Monte Carlo and Depletion Reactor Analysis for High performance Computing Applications

Download or read book Monte Carlo and Depletion Reactor Analysis for High performance Computing Applications written by Brenden Thomas Mervin and published by . This book was released on 2013 with total page 262 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This dissertation discusses the research and development for a coupled neutron trans- port/isotopic depletion capability for use in high-preformance computing applications. Accurate neutronics modeling and simulation for \real" reactor problems has been a long sought after goal in the computational community. A complementary \stretch goal" to this is the ability to perform full-core depletion analysis and spent fuel isotopic characterization. This dissertation thus presents the research and development of a coupled Monte Carlo transport/isotopic depletion implementation with the Exnihilo framework geared for high-performance computing architectures to enable neutronics analysis for full-core reactor problems. An in-depth case study of the current state of Monte Carlo neutron transport with respect to source sampling, source convergence, uncertainty underprediction and biases associated with localized tallies in Monte Carlo eigenvalue calculations was performed using MCNPand KENO. This analysis is utilized in the design and development of the statistical algorithms for Exnihilo's Monte Carlo framework, Shift. To this end, a methodology has been developed in order to perform tally statistics in domain decomposed environments. This methodology has been shown to produce accurate tally uncertainty estimates in domain-decomposed environments without a significant increase in the memory requirements, processor-to-processor communications, or computational biases. With the addition of parallel, domain-decomposed tally uncertainty estimation processes, a depletion package was developed for the Exnihilo code suite to utilize the depletion capabilities of the Oak Ridge Isotope GENeration code. This interface was designed to be transport agnostic, meaning that it can be used by any of the reactor analysis packages within Exnihilo such as Denovo or Shift. Extensive validation and testing of the ORIGEN interface and coupling with the Shift Monte Carlo transport code is performed within this dissertation, and results are presented for the calculated eigenvalues, material powers, and nuclide concentrations for the depleted materials. These results are then compared to ORIGEN and TRITON depletion calculations, and analysis shows that the Exnihilo transport-depletion capability is in good agreement with these codes.

Book Methods for Including Multiphysics Feedback in Monte Carlo Reactor Physics Calculations

Download or read book Methods for Including Multiphysics Feedback in Monte Carlo Reactor Physics Calculations written by Matthew Shawn Ellis and published by . This book was released on 2017 with total page 321 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The ability to model and simulate nuclear reactors during steady state and transient conditions is important for designing efficient and safe nuclear power systems. The accurate simulation of a nuclear reactor is particularly challenging because the multiple physical processes within the reactor are tightly coupled, which requires that the numerical methods used to resolve each physical process can accurately and efficiently transfer and utilize data from other applications. Monte Carlo methods are desirable for solving the neutron transport equation required in reactor analysis because of the inherent accuracy of the method, but the Computational Solid Geometry (CSG) representation of the physical geometry makes it difficult to accurately and efficiently perform multiphysics reactor analyses with other applications that utilize finite element or finite volume representations. To address this limitation, a multiphysics coupling framework that minimizes the need for spatial discretization in the Monte Carlo geometry is presented in this thesis. The coupling framework uses Functional Expansion Tallies to transfer multiphysics information from the Monte Carlo application to other multiphysics tools. Additionally, the coupling framework uses a modified method for transporting neutrons through spatially continuous total macroscopic cross section distributions in order to incorporate continuous multiphysics feedback fields such as fuel temperature and coolant density into the Monte Carlo simulation. It has been shown that separable Zernike and Legendre Function Expansion Tallies can effectively reconstruct a continuous distribution of fission power density. Additionally, using a prototypical three-dimensional Light Water Reactor pin cell, the method used to transport neutrons through a continuously varying fuel temperature and coolant density distribution was shown to be 1.7 times faster than a comparable discretized simulation with volume-averaged properties, while still providing a high level of accuracy. Finally, in order to make the overall multiphysics coupling scheme useful for reactor analyses, a novel spatially continuous depletion methodology was developed and investigated. With the spatially continuous depletion methodology, number densities can be represented as a linear combination of polynomials, and those polynomial representations can be integrated through time to predict reactor operation. The spatially continuous depletion methodology was able to accurately predict the eigenvalue and number density distributions in a two-dimensional LWR pin cell depletion containing Gd-157 from a 2 weight percent GdO2 and seven other nuclides in the depletion matrix. Analyses of the spatially continuous depletion methodology showed that significant reductions in the number of tallied values could be achieved if polynomial representations were optimized for each nuclide reaction rate. From the depletion simulations in this thesis, a 23% reduction in the required number of reaction rate tallies compared to a lower-fidelity, 10 radial ring pin discretization was shown to be achievable with nuclide polynomial optimization. In addition to showing potential for reductions in tally memory and computational requirements, the spatially continuous depletion simulation was shown to be equal in computational performance to a discrete simulation with 10 radial rings and 8 azimuthal cuts, while providing a much higher level of spatial fidelity in number density concentrations.

Book excerpt: In order to operate a reactor safely and efficiently, computer simulations must be used to predict certain nuclear characteristics of the reactor. To determine how materials change in a fission power environment, a time-dependent depletion isotopic code must be used. Over the past several decades, the MIT Reactor (MITR) has taken many steps to prepare for its conversion from the use of highly enriched uranium (HEU) to low enriched uranium (LEU) in its fuel. Throughout this process, detailed neutronics simulations must be run to predict the characteristics of the reactor with its current HEU fuel, with potential forms of LEU fuel, and with combinations of the two. MCODE Version 3 is a linkage code that performs time-dependent burnup calculations by combining the Monte Carlo N-Particle transport code, MCNP, with the Oak Ridge Isotope Generation point depletion code, ORIGEN-S. MCNP provides reaction rates and neutron flux in user-specified irradiation material regions. COUPLE, a data-editing code included in the SCALE- 6.1 software package, uses these data from MCNP to update the cross section libraries, which ORIGEN then uses to perform nuclide depletion calculations in each irradiation zone. The MCNP model is then updated with the depleted material compositions, and the exchange is repeated. The MCNP/ORIGEN coupling utilizes an optional predictor-corrector capability. As a newer version of MCODE Version 2.2, MCODE-3 offers three major changes from its predecessor. The first is the incorporation of ORIGEN-S. MCODE-2 used a previous version of ORIGEN, which is no longer supported by ORNL. ORIGEN-S provides newer nuclear data as well as additional functionality and usability. Secondly, MCODE-3 uses COUPLE to create an entirely unique cross section library from the regionally averaged 238-group flux, which means every cross section value that MCODE-3 uses in its depletion is specific to the input model. MCODE-2 only updates a fraction of nuclides' cross sections, the rest default to a pre-compiled library. Finally, while MCODE-2.2 was written in ANSI C, MCODE-3's main function has been rewritten in the Python scripting language. MCODE's preproc, mcodeout, and mcnpxs programs have not been edited, and are thus still written in ANSI C. Benchmarking has indicated that while the evolution of most nuclides is similar to an MCODE-2 calculation, over many depletion steps some nuclides can diverge due to COUPLE's use of the 238-group flux.
