This book was released on 2017-12 with total page 342 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The posthumously published collection Hermit in Paris draws together an array of Italo Calvino’s autobiographical writings that provide an illuminating and unexpectedly intimate portrait of one of the postwar era’s most inventive and fascinating writers. In these pages, Calvino recounts his experiences in Italy’s antifascist resistance, pays homage to his influences, traces the evolution of his literary style, and, in one of the book’s most humorous and entertaining sections, provides a wry commentary on his travels in the United States in 1959 and 1960.

Book The Banks and the Italian Economy

Download or read book The Banks and the Italian Economy written by Damiano Bruno Silipo and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2009-04-22 with total page 242 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Damiano Bruno Silipo In the 1990s the Italian banking system underwent profound normative, institutional and structural changes. The Consolidated Law on Banking (1993) and that on Finance (1998) instituted the legal framework for a far-reaching overhaul of the Italian banking and ?nancial system: signi?cant relaxation of entry barriers, the liberalization of branching, the privatization of the Italian banks, and a massive process of mergers and acquisitions. Following the Bank of Italy’s liberalization of branching in 1990, in 10 years the number of bank branches increased by 70% in Italy, while in the rest of Europe it declined. Over the decade the average number of banks doing business in a province rose from 27 to 31, while a wave of mergers (324 operations) and acquisitions (137) revolutionized the Italian banking industry, reducing the overall number of Italian banks by 30%. To a signi?cant extent this concentration represented take-overs of troubled Southern banks by Central and Northern ones. As a result of these developments (plus a rise in banking productivity and a fall in costs), the spread between short-term lending and deposit rates fell from 7 percentage points in 1990 to 4 points in 1999. And despite an increase in concentration in a number of local credit markets, the interest-rate differential between the locally dominant and other banks generally narrowed.

Book Syntactic Parsing Strategies in Italian

Download or read book Syntactic Parsing Strategies in Italian written by M. de Vincenzi and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 1991-10-31 with total page 260 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The basic accomplishment of sentence processing research in the 1960s and 70s was to establish that perceivers assign structural representa tions to sentences (Fodor et al., 1974) and they do so systematically using the formation rules of the grammar (Forster, 1979). This may sound like a singularly unimpressive accomplishment to a contem porary linguist - mere proof of the obvious. But one must recall the extremely impoverished view of language and language processing prevalent in the U.S. in the 1950s. Processing mechanisms were thought to consist of slightly elaborated stimulus-response associations, and sentences were viewed as mere strings of concatenated words. On this view, understanding language comprehension was naturally equated with knowing how words and associations between them were learned. Consequently, language pro cessing was investigated by performing a seemingly endless series of tedious paired associate learning studies. The shift in the 1960s to a view of sentences emphasizing hierarchically organized structures con taining grammatical depencies between widely separated items was thus dramatic.

Book Dependent Agents as Permanent Establishments

Download or read book Dependent Agents as Permanent Establishments written by Michael Lang and published by Linde Verlag GmbH. This book was released on 2014-07-04 with total page 308 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Dependent Agents as Permanent Establishments The article on business profits may be the most relevant one in tax treaties. If patterned after the OECD Model Tax Convention, this article allocates the exclusive taxing right over the profits of an enterprise to the residence country, unless the enterprise carries on business in the source country through a permanent establishment. Considering the importance of allocating taxation rights, tax authorities and courts of many countries have increasingly focused on the concept of agency permanent establishment. This book includes 12 chapters which provide an in-depth analysis of the key aspects that need to be taken into account for interpreting the concept of agency permanent establishment. It incorporates the perspectives of leading scholars and practitioners dealing with international tax cases. This book is designed to provide essential insights to academics, practitioners, tax officials and judges who deal or are interested in the field of international taxation.

Book Document Analysis Systems VI

Download or read book Document Analysis Systems VI written by Simone Marinai and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2004-08-26 with total page 575 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Thisvolumecontainspapersselectedforpresentationatthe6thIAPRWorkshop on Document Analysis Systems (DAS 2004) held during September 8–10, 2004 at the University of Florence, Italy. Several papers represent the state of the art in a broad range of “traditional” topics such as layout analysis, applications to graphics recognition, and handwritten documents. Other contributions address the description of complete working systems, which is one of the strengths of this workshop. Some papers extend the application domains to other media, like the processing of Internet documents. The peculiarity of this 6th workshop was the large number of papers related to digital libraries and to the processing of historical documents, a taste which frequently requires the analysis of color documents. A total of 17 papers are associated with these topics, whereas two yearsago (in DAS 2002) only a couple of papers dealt with these problems. In our view there are three main reasons for this new wave in the DAS community. From the scienti?c point of view, several research ?elds reached a thorough knowledge of techniques and problems that can be e?ectively solved, and this expertise can now be applied to new domains. Another incentive has been provided by several research projects funded by the EC and the NSF on topics related to digital libraries.

Book The Greenhouse Gas Balance of Italy

Download or read book The Greenhouse Gas Balance of Italy written by Riccardo Valentini and published by Springer. This book was released on 2014-12-29 with total page 209 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book addresses in a comprehensive way the full greenhouse gases budget of the Italian landscape, focusing on land use and terrestrial ecosystems. In recent years there has been a growing interest in the role of terrestrial ecosystems with regard to the carbon cycle and only recently a regional approach has been considered for its specificity in terms of new methodologies for observations and models and its relevance for national policies on mitigation and adaptation to climate changes. In terms of methods this book describes the role of flux networks and data-driven models, airborne regional measurements of fluxes and specific sectoral approaches related to important components of the human and natural landscapes. There is also a growing need on the part of institutions, agencies and policy stakeholders for new data and analyses enabling them to improve their national inventories of greenhouse gases and their compliance with the UNFCCC process. In this respect the data presented is a basis for a full carbon accounting and available to relevant stakeholders for improvements and/or verification of national inventories. The wealth of research information is the result of a national project, CARBOITALY, which involved 15 Italian institutions and several researchers to provide new data and analyses in the framework of climate policies.
