Building on the pioneering work of Klein, Ferenczi, Balint, and particularly Winnicott, Dr. Robert Van Sweden shows how to foster the process of experiencing these early states in the analytic setting. With vivid clinical illustrations he demonstrates that regression to that time of early dependence allows the patient to reexperience the mother-infant relationship in the transference, and to reintegrate parts of the self split off during failures in the original dyadic interaction. Dr. Van Sweden, like the pioneers on whose work he builds, believes that in the safety of the analytic setting regression leads to further ego integration and to emotional development. Thus, regression to dependence is ultimately progressive. In this book Dr. Van Sweden thoroughly reviews theories of regression and then adds his own conceptualizations. He sees patients who are in need of a regression to dependence as most often those with preoedipal rather than oedipal conflicts. Therefore, technique must be altered in a way that involves metaphorically cradling the patient in reexperiencing the first few months of life. Since the patient then often experiences overwhelmingly primitive affects, the therapist must be willing to extend the standard therapeutic frame and be able to survive the patient's projected rage and pain if ego integration is to take place. This book is divided into four parts. Part One addresses the nature of regression to dependence and introduces the reader to Mrs. R., whose experiences in analysis illustrate the challenges and advantages of applying the theoretical concept of regression in the actual clinical setting. Part Two focuses on the risks and rewards of the regression to dependence, including a review of some analysts' theoretically and clinically based objections to this process. Part Three explores the interactions between analyst and patient that impede ego integration and those that facilitate it. Part Four presents the author's view of the important changes regression to dependence can offer patients and how this approach makes psychoanalysis useful to a wider scope of patients.

Banerjee shows us, through the eyes of immigrants themselves, how the visa process strips them of their rights, forcing them to depend on their spouses and the government in fundamentally challenging ways. Book excerpt: Focusing on the Anglophone Caribbean, The Making of a Caribbean Avant-Garde describes the rise and gradual consolidation of the visual arts avant-garde, which came to local and international attention in the 1990s. The book is centered on the critical and aesthetic strategies employed by this avant-garde to repudiate the previous generation’s commitment to modernism and anti-colonialism. In three sections, it highlights the many converging factors, which have pushed this avant-garde to the forefront of the region’s contemporary scene, and places it all in the context of growing dissatisfaction with the post-colonial state and its cultural policies. This generational transition has manifested itself not only in a departure from “traditional” in favor of “new” media (i.e., installation, performance, and video rather than painting and sculpture), but also in the advancement of a “postnationalist postmodernism,” which reaches for diasporic and cosmopolitan frames of reference. Section one outlines the features of a preceding “Creole modernism” and explains the different guises of postnationalism in the region’s contemporary art. At a time when just about everyone knows that smoking is bad for you, why do so many college students smoke? Is it a short lived phase or do they continue throughout the college years? And what happens after college, when they enter the “real world”? Drawing on interviews and focus groups with hundreds of young adults, Lighting Up takes the reader into their everyday lives to explore social smoking. Mimi Nichter argues that we must understand more about the meaning of social and low level smoking to youth, the social contexts that cause them to take up (or not take up) the habit, and the way that smoking plays a large role in students’ social lives. Nichter examines how smoking facilitates social interaction, helps young people express and explore their identity, and serves as a means for communicating emotional states. Most college students who smoked socially were confident that “this was no big deal.” After all, they were “not really smokers” and they would only be smoking for a short time. But, as graduation neared, they expressed ambivalence or reluctance to quit. As many grads today step into an uncertain future, where the prospect of finding a good job in a timely manner is unlikely, their 20s may be a time of great stress and instability. For those who have come to depend on the comfort of cigarettes during college, this array of life stressors may make cutting back or quitting more difficult, despite one’s intentions and understandings of the harms of tobacco. And emerging products on the market, like e-cigarettes, offer an opportunity to move from smoking to vaping. Lighting Up considers how smoking fits into the lives of young adults and how uncertain times may lead to uncertain smoking trajectories that reach into adulthood.
