Book Dependable Engines

Download or read book Dependable Engines written by Mark P. Sullivan and published by AIAA (American Institute of Aeronautics & Astronautics). This book was released on 2008 with total page 188 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Pratt & Whitney engines helped to win World War II by powering much of the U.S. fighter fleet as well as many British planes. They also powered 98 percent of all transport planes used by the military during that war. Since then, they've powered such record-breaking aircraft as the Boeing B-50, the first airplane to fly nonstop around the globe, and the Air Force F-100 Super Sabre becoming the first aircraft to break the speed of sound in horizontal flight. In July 1976, Pratt & Whitney J58 engines powered an SR-71 spy plane to a world altitude record of 84,069 feet (25,624 kilometers) and a second Blackbird to a world speed record of 2,193 miles per hour (3,529 kilometers per hour). These dependable engines are also responsible for powering the first generation of commercial jet transports bringing the world to our front doors - the Boeing 707 and Douglas DC-8. Pratt & Whitney's JT8D, powering the Boeing 727 and 737, as well as the Douglas DC-9, has totaled more than half a billion hours of service with more than 350 operators since its commercial service began. In fact, they've been used in most of the world's civil, commercial and military aircraft. Over the years, Pratt & Whitney has patented hundreds of innovations, from heat-resistant coatings to aerodynamic blades - technologies that make air travel more cost effective, comfortable and dependable. Today Pratt and Whitney engines provide power for everything from land based power stations, business jets and helicopters to large commercial aircraft, fifth generation fighters, and manned & unmanned space vehicles."The story of Pratt & Whitney" offers broad insight into the history of aviation itself and the people who built the industry."--Résumé de l'éditeur.

Book excerpt: McLaren: The Engine Company is the previously untold story of McLaren Engines, an American company founded in 1969 by Bruce McLaren and his partners to build engines for McLaren's legendary Can-Am and Indy Cars. From this base in suburban Detroit were born the mighty big-block Chevrolet V8s that powered the iconic orange cars to two of their five consecutive Cam-Am championships. McLaren's busy dyno rooms also spawned the howling turbo Offenhausers that put Mark Donahue and Johnny Rutherford in Victory Lane at Indianapolis three times between 1972 and 1976. For decades this non-descript shop was the hotbed of horsepower for factories and top independents alike. McLaren Engines developed the turbocharged Cosworth DFV Formula 1 engine that powered Indy cars for both Team McLaren and Penske Racing. It rendered BMW's turbo engine for U.S. IMSA racing that later became BMW's Formula 1 weapon. The long list of race engines developed here powered Buick Indy and IMSA cars, BMW GTP cars, Cadillac LeMans prototypes, Porsche Trans-Am 944s and David Hobbs' F5000 single seaters. There were McLaren-built big-block turbo V8s for offshore boat racing and even a Cosworth-Vega engine for American dirt tracks! Author Roger Meiners combines his life-long passion for motor racing and technology with his historian's sensibilities to make the engines, cars, and key personalities come alive within this book's pages. Ride along with Meiners as he uncovers little-known details of the company's transition from a race shop to an engineering company, developing lust-worthy performance cars such as the sensational 1987 Buick GNX, the 1989 Pontiac Grand Prix Turbo, the FR500 Ford Mustang concept, and other projects that the public never saw. Today the company, known as McLaren Engineering, is a subsidiary of Canada-based Linamar Corporation, and is sought after by global automakers for its unrivaled testing, development and manufacturing capability.

Book Country Acres and Cul de Sacs

Download or read book Country Acres and Cul de Sacs written by Jay Gitlin and published by Wesleyan University Press. This book was released on 2018-10-16 with total page 321 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1938, the first year of its publication, Connecticut Circle magazine covered the opening of the Merritt Parkway in June, a devastating hurricane in September, and a transformative election in November that saw Raymond Baldwin replace Governor Wilbur Cross on the brink of WWII. Covering the news, recreation, literary figures, and politicians, and above all—the achievements and products of the state, Connecticut Circle entertained, promoted, and projected the image of a bustling state with more than its share of creative citizens and renowned institutions of higher learning. Its readership included not only proud Nutmeggers, but potential tourists, and more than a few Mr. and Mrs. Blandings contemplating—the state's board of realtors hoped—a potential move from New York City to an ancient colonial homestead made newly accessible via the Merritt Parkway or the New Haven Railroad. The magazine was saturated with ads and articles that presaged the state's residential (and suburban) future, and people and events of this dramatic time come alive in this large collection of articles from Connecticut Circle magazine, as Connecticut defines itself for the modern era. With an illuminating introduction and context-setting headnotes for its thirteen sections, this volume provides a wealth of fascinating articles for anyone seeking to reminisce, and understand the values that pushed Connecticut into the postwar world.
