Book excerpt: This study examines academic departments as a context for teaching in the secondary school. lt explores why teachers find departments to be crucial to the high school setting. In all three schools studied and in all four subjects English, Maths, Science and Social Science teachers - even those who felt isolated in their classrooms - located their sense of professional identity, practice and community in their departments. Departments are seen as boundaries for dividing the school; centres of social interaction; a micro political decision-making forum; as a subject knowledge category. Those concerns are important at this time as various attacks are being made on school structures and subject and administration fragmentation - in these cases subjects are seen as obstacles to change. To subject groups they are viewed as potential vehicles to carry and confirm the message.

Book Earl Campbell

Download or read book Earl Campbell written by Asher Price and published by University of Texas Press. This book was released on 2019-09-05 with total page 344 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Earl Campbell was a force in American football, winning a state championship in high school, rushing his way to a Heisman trophy for the University of Texas, and earning MVP as he took the Houston Oilers to the brink of the Super Bowl. An exhilarating blend of biography and history, Earl Campbell chronicles the challenges and sacrifices one supremely gifted athlete faced in his journey to the Hall of Fame. The story begins in Tyler, Texas, featuring his indomitable mother, a crusading judge, and a newly integrated high school, then moves to Austin, home of the University of Texas (infamously, the last all-white national champion in college football), where legendary coach Darrell Royal stakes his legacy on recruiting Campbell. Later, in booming, Luv-Ya-Blue Houston, Campbell reaches his peak with beloved coach Bum Phillips, who celebrates his star runner’s bruising style even as it takes its toll on Campbell’s body. Drawing on new interviews and research, Asher Price reveals how a naturally reticent kid from the country who never sought the spotlight ran into complex issues of race and health. In an age when concussion revelations and player protest against racial injustice rock the NFL, Campbell’s life is a timely story of hard-earned success—and heart-wrenching sacrifice.

Book The Role of State Departments of Education in Complex School Reform

Download or read book The Role of State Departments of Education in Complex School Reform written by Susan Follett Lusi and published by . This book was released on 1997 with total page 217 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Role of State Departments of Education in Complex School Reform uses in-depth case studies of two models of statewide school reform - Kentucky and Vermont - to examine the role of state departments in the reform process. Susan Follett Lusi's nearly 200 interviews and multiple site visits detail how these departments of education implemented their reform plans, and describe the effects of their choices on both the internal dynamics of the departments as well as on the external ability of schools and districts to implement reform. The efforts of these two departments are measured against the challenging demands of systemic reform, and data from the case studies provide a powerful basis for analysis and discussion. This well-researched study will be valuable reading for graduate courses in educational policy, administration, foundations, and school reform, and will be of interest to researchers and professors involved in those areas, as well as to state-level policy makers.

Download or read book Who Will Keep the Public Healthy written by Institute of Medicine and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2003-04-29 with total page 320 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Bioterrorism, drug-resistant disease, transmission of disease by global travel . . . there's no shortage of challenges facing America's public health officials. Men and women preparing to enter the field require state-of-the-art training to meet these increasing threats to the public health. But are the programs they rely on provide the high caliber professional training they require? Who Will Keep the Public Healthy? provides an overview of the past, present, and future of public health education, assessing its readiness to provide the training and education needed to prepare men and women to face 21st century challenges. Advocating an ecological approach to public health, the Institute of Medicine examines the role of public health schools and degree-granting programs, medical schools, nursing schools, and government agencies, as well as other institutions that foster public health education and leadership. Specific recommendations address the content of public health education, qualifications for faculty, availability of supervised practice, opportunities for cross-disciplinary research and education, cooperation with government agencies, and government funding for education. Eight areas of critical importance to public health education in the 21st century are examined in depth: informatics, genomics, communication, cultural competence, community-based participatory research, global health, policy and law, and public health ethics. The book also includes a discussion of the policy implications of its ecological framework.
