This book was released on 2015-04-30 with total page 236 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the first edition of this manual. It has been revised, expanded, and updated to meet the most recent demands for Peer Specialist training curricula in the Department of Veterans Affairs (DVA). This manual is adapted from the 2007 National Association of Peer Specialists (NAPS) Training Manual, Third Edition, with permission from Steven Harrington, founder and CEO of NAPS. It has been developed through extensive input from peer support practitioners across the United States. The author of the original manual is also an experienced peer support specialist. The competencies were developed by a DVA workgroup that synthesized information from the training programs and testing instruments of six prominent peer support specialist training and certification programs in the United States. This manual also contains DVA specific language and procedures.

Book Evaluation of the Department of Veterans Affairs Mental Health Services

Download or read book Evaluation of the Department of Veterans Affairs Mental Health Services written by National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2018-03-29 with total page 467 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Approximately 4 million U.S. service members took part in the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq. Shortly after troops started returning from their deployments, some active-duty service members and veterans began experiencing mental health problems. Given the stressors associated with war, it is not surprising that some service members developed such mental health conditions as posttraumatic stress disorder, depression, and substance use disorder. Subsequent epidemiologic studies conducted on military and veteran populations that served in the operations in Afghanistan and Iraq provided scientific evidence that those who fought were in fact being diagnosed with mental illnesses and experiencing mental healthâ€"related outcomesâ€"in particular, suicideâ€"at a higher rate than the general population. This report provides a comprehensive assessment of the quality, capacity, and access to mental health care services for veterans who served in the Armed Forces in Operation Enduring Freedom/Operation Iraqi Freedom/Operation New Dawn. It includes an analysis of not only the quality and capacity of mental health care services within the Department of Veterans Affairs, but also barriers faced by patients in utilizing those services.

Book Military Psychologists Desk Reference

Download or read book Military Psychologists Desk Reference written by Bret A. Moore and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2014-04-01 with total page 383 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The psychological well-being of servicemen and women returning from war is one of the most discussed and contemplated mental health issues today. Media programs debate the epidemic of PTSD in returning veterans and the potential fallout of a less-than-adequate veteran mental health system. This public discussion is only a small glimpse into the field of military psychology. One of the most diverse specialties within psychology, it is a sector positioned and equipped to influence such concepts as psychological resilience, consequences of extended family stress, the role of technology in mental healthcare delivery, and how to increase human performance under harsh conditions. Military Psychologists' Desk Reference is the authoritative guide in the field of military mental health, covering in a clear and concise manner the depth and breadth of this expanding area at a pivotal and relevant time. Moore and Barnett, former military psychologists, bring together the field's top experts to provide concise and targeted reviews of the most salient aspects of military mental health and present the material in an easily digestible manner. Chapters cover important topics such as military culture, working with Special Operations Forces, professional issues and ethical challenges, women in combat, posttraumatic stress, anxiety and sleep disorders, psychologists' involvement in interrogations, and how to build and sustain a resilient Force, to name but a few. Authors consist of a combination of current and former military psychologists, psychiatrists, social workers and Chaplains, experts from the Department of Veterans Affairs, prominent academicians, and representatives from other governmental and civilian organizations. This comprehensive resource is a must for every military psychologist, as well as for non-military clinicians, researchers, counselors, social workers, educators, and trainees who increasingly need to be familiar with this specialized area of psychology.

Download or read book BROKEN PROMISES written by LtCol Ted Blickwedel and published by Outskirts Press. This book was released on 2023-08-18 with total page 252 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Witness the Heroic yet devastating Crusade by WHISTLEBLOWER, combat veteran and retired Marine Corps LtCol, Ted Blickwedel, who took on the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) to defend Veterans’ quality care and the well-being of those who serve them. Blickwedel, a Licensed Clinical Social Worker and VET Center counselor for the VA, fought valiantly to protect veterans, their families and counselors from the VA’s misguided, harmful and unethical clinical performance policies, which turned patients into numbers and severely compromised the mental health and welfare of both Veterans and the clinicians who serve them. Consequently, VA management was no longer “keeping the promise” Abraham Lincoln made in 1865 after the Civil War: “To care for him who shall have borne the battle, and for his widow, and his orphan.” Now the VA was ‘breaking the promise.’ Broken Promises also uncovers the toxic, malicious and deceptive whistleblower retaliation tactics inflicted on Blickwedel by VA officials designed to silence him from ‘speaking truth to power,’ and it reveals the horrific impact these retributions had on himself, family members, clients and counselors. Though defamed, marginalized, gaslighted, mobbed, and experiencing traumatic near-death health challenges, he marched steadfastly on. Despite being forced to leave the job he loved, counseling his fellow veterans, Blickwedel was compelled and determined to expose and correct the callous misconduct, injustice and abuse perpetrated by VA management. A federal Government Accountability Office (GAO) investigation Blickwedel helped instigate substantiated his allegations, which led to the U.S. Congress passing legislation into law that ensures VA leadership is accountable for protecting the quality of care for our Veterans and their families, as well as safeguarding the well-being and morale of counselors who provide services to them at over 300 VET Centers nationwide. Broken Promises further gives hope to those who undertake similar campaigns to report corruption, neglect and maltreatment by providing indispensable guidelines that will greatly enhance the effectiveness of the endeavor while granting a better chance for a more favorable outcome. Also, self-care strategies are offered which are essential to maintain good health and resilience throughout such an overwhelming ordeal. Blickwedel’s unwavering Battle to rectify jeopardized mental health care and endangered counselor welfare within the VA VET Center program has been featured on NBC and NPR, to include the Military Times, other publications and local news broadcasts. A man of courage, integrity and tireless resolve, Blickwedel epitomizes all that is great in our American heroes.
